This song is about a relationship and may not seem fitting but I think the chorus is perfect from the perspective of self-love which is what I'm celebrating today. 10 years ago, almost to the day, I turned my life around. Working on my health and finding my purpose in regards to my vocation has made me a much better version of myself. Far from perfect, still working out all the kinks, I'm proud to now help people do the same.

Yeah we got a good thing going on
Yeah we got a good thing going on
Wanna make it last for so long
Wanna make it last so long
Kind of feel like I belong

🌿 EARLY BIRD PRICING ENDS SOON! 🌿

Thanks to February being a short month and my poor math skills, I realized that yesterday's post wasn't accurate. Today equals only 10 days left to grab your Early Bird Special for the Day of Renewal & Empowerment retreat! ā³

I think it's a pretty good deal overall, only $200 for a whole day of working with three super knowledgeable, passionate people who are committed to helping you be the best version of yourself. Throw in a $25 early bird special and it's even better!

I know the retreat isn't until April 12, 2025, but knowing whether or not you'll be joining us, helps us fine-tune our program with your individualized needs.

We want our retreat to be cozy and intimate. We want this to be the first of many in 2025 and we'd love to have people there who would consider going to even longer retreats, possibly traveling to beautiful places and connecting with nature while healing on all levels.

But most of all, we want you there.

Insights from Living the Wisdom of the Tao, Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life, Verse Ten:

Another tricky one. Lots of questions are asked here. It is based on the paradoxes that come with life’s challenges. Can you love and govern without self-importance? Can you create and not possess? Work and not take credit? Lead but not control?

The author’s advice:

1) See yourself in everyone you encounter. Bet you won’t be so
judgy, lol.

2) Enjoy what you own but don’t get too attached – like the
previous 9th verse said, you are not your stuff.

3) Remember the words of Jesus who when asked about when
the Kingdom would come said, ā€œIt will not come by looking outward.ā€

Insights from Living the Wisdom of the Tao, Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life, Verse Nine:

Yes, I know, the library book is officially overdue. I'm way too Type A to stop at 8 instead of 10 so two more posts and then I promise to take it back - besides my brain will remember better where I left off now.šŸ™ƒ Okay, here we go...

Stop! Enough is enough! No more possessions, pride, going, going, going. Why are you addicted to MORE? Why are you not satisfied? Joyfully enjoy what you have. Stop focusing on the ā€œego’s agenda.ā€ This is not the way to heaven.

A great example was given in the book. If a healthy baby can be born in 9 months, would a pregnant woman say, well, let’s wait and see what happens if I increase gestation for 5 years? As a woman who carried and gave birth to twins, Hell, no! They and even my Jack who was born almost a month early were perfect just the way they were. I did the work, and then we rejoiced.

I am guilty of always going. It’s in my DNA. I work hard to slow it down but it’s a challenge since doing so often brings feelings of guilt. I think it also had to do with self-worth or lack thereof. I’ll be enough if…

But it’s time to get off that merry-go-round. Who’s with me?

My natural health peers - would love your thoughts! My question is - are the people coming to you healthy or is the doctor responsible for trying to undo years of unhealthy habits? Are the people still held accountable for their own health?

While doctors may be well-intentioned, the economics of this industry are such that they make more money the sicker their patients.

Insights from Living the Wisdom of the Tao Day (Verse) Seven:

It's all about the ego.

You know it’s hard at work behind the scenes if…
• your definition of success includes titles and things

• your meditations or prayers involve asking for anything before
putting others first

• you do not appreciate what you already have

• you are really feeling your oats (aka patting yourself a little too
much on the back) or conversely feeling all boo-hoo poor me

OR

(Yikes, these examples from the book really resonated with me - remember, I’m working on this s**t just like the rest of you)

• You’re in the car, someone else is driving and they miss the
perfect spot, and you just can’t zip your lip

• During a conversation, there’s an opportunity to share your
knowledge. Oh, how it kills you to sit there and not say a word.

Yep, these are all ā€œego momentsā€ and they are not serving your best interest.

It’s okay, we’re all here to evolve and grow, and recognizing where we need to do the same is the first step.

When necessary, try having a conversation with your ego. As crazy as it may sound, I've had them and they've gone something like this, "Thank you, ego. I can see that you're just trying to protect me by making me feel ___. It's okay. I've got this."

I've literally felt a weight remove itself from my shoulders.

Although sometimes it seems it can't get the hint, lol, and wants to keep intervening. It’s cool. I just keep TRYING to let life come to me, stay appreciative and put others first.

Insights from Living the Wisdom of the Tao Day Six: This one is all about the Divine Feminine. Don't check out, boys, we all have this immortal energy pulsing through our souls. How does she express herself? Through our creativity. Listen for her voice through your inner callings. What is driving you? What are you passionate about? Offer it your talents, intelligence, abilities, and desires - all that is unique to you. Ignore all judgments and doubts. Get rid of the ego. In response, she will make your dreams a reality.

I just love the timing of these passages. I'm not forcing myself to read these daily since I don't want this to become a job. I'm a big believer in the idea that things will be presented to us as we need them. So, there I was, lying in bed this morning, overcome by what I can only call boredom. It has nothing to do with not having a life that overall leaves me content. But lately, my studies have been a bit of a snoozer. I am always hungry for more knowledge and my latest class just isn't cutting it. Yet, just simply connecting with these feelings and throwing them out there has resulted in a flurry of activity this morning. New resources, new ideas, and lots of ah-hah moments - all of which will make me a better doctor than I was yesterday. Thank you, Divine Mother!

Insights from Living the Wisdom of the Tao Day Five: OK, this is an easy one. Well, easy to understand what is being told to us, not necessarily easy to put into action, especially in today's divisive world.

Essentially, it boils down to this: Everyone's equal and no one is getting preferential treatment from Source regardless of what you might think. In fact, the Tao Te Ching uses the words "straw dogs" as to how we are viewed. Translated this means, "ritual objects, venerated before the ceremony but afterward abandoned and trampled underfoot." Ouch! šŸ˜‚Talk about keeping us humble!

So, how do we go about putting our money where our mouth is? Do as Kermit above. Don't entertain thoughts of evil judgment. Remind yourself that you are not more special than anyone else. Ask Source or Holy Spirit, or whichever one floats your boat, for guidance, and in the meantime just keep sharing and caring.

Insights from Living the Wisdom of the Tao Day Four: I find creating a simple summary for this verse, where there are many ideas present, more challenging than the others.

First, what is your role within all that is? It's not your job, it's not even your present life - those are too limiting. After all, we are part of something limitless.

Second, your thoughts manifest your actions so be prosperous with them. Remove negativity.

Third (easier said than done), be like the eagle and view your problems from a higher perspective. Will they matter in a hundred years?

Fourth, you don't always need to talk. Just be. Observe without criticism. Observe without trying to fix it. Find answers, peace, and joy in this state of repose.

Finally, know that you are simultaneously nothing and everything.

I have days where I feel I'm well on my way to mastering all of these and others where I've done a fine job clunking things up, LOL. That's okay. As Verse 4 says, Source smooths the sharp edges, loosens the twisted knots, softens the clouds, and lets the dust settle, allowing us to try again - endlessly.

Insights from Living the Wisdom of the Tao Day Three: This image really says it all. If you think a new or better title, more things, etc. is what defines you or is going to make your life better, it's not. In fact, it opens the door for people to start giving you the crooked eyebrow. "Hmm, maybe I should borrow or steal from them" literally or emotionally by being an energy vampire. Instead, serve - and chill out.

It doesn't mean you can never buy yourself anything. Heck, I booked a massage for later on today. I'm celebrating finishing my 3rd post-doc in functional medicine class and my lower back is killing me from weeding earlier in the week. But, as recommended by this great book, I will SAVOR the experience with GRATITUDE.

Insights from Living the Wisdom of the Tao Day Two: Living the Paradoxical Unity.

There's only beauty if there's ugly, no night without day, no life without death. Live your life knowing they exist, but don't stress about it. Be like the otter: peaceful, playful, moving through the water without judgment.

Couldn't figure out why two nights ago I had dreams that bummed me out the whole day. I was essentially reminded of as***le things I had done in my youth, things that I thought I had made peace with - so why were they back in my consciousness?

Then I read this verse, and it became clear: Without a reminder of what I had been, I wouldn't see how far I have come.

The Dao and Dog Puke

Insights from Living the Wisdom of the Tao Day One: Relax and enjoy the mystery of life. Don't try to figure everything and everyone out and stop thinking about how life SHOULD be.

I had a gross but funny opportunity to put this to the test yesterday. Following a morning meditation, with my hand on my heart center, the instructor read the daily affirmation. "I have everything I need to make today a great day."

Almost got to finish, but then the dog began to wretch, regurgitated his breakfast, and then took advantage of his second meal of the day.😫This was soooo not what I had envisioned but you know what? The unexpected contrast made my husband and I laugh - hard - and that's not a bad way to start the morning either. 🄰

Growing up, I remember what felt like the torture of waiting a whole half hour before we could return to the pool after eating. Saw this AP News article which clarifies that sometimes you do need to wait and other times you don't.

Personally, the temperature is my deciding factor. Going from a super-hot beach to a cold-water lake with a belly full of food = not always the best combination.

Our Story

Thank you for visiting Heavenly Health, owned and operated by Dr. Karen Nelson. Dr. Karen is a holistic health doctor board certified by the American Naturopathic Medical Association. Clientele of all-ages benefit from her extensive training in nutrition, bodywork techniques, flower remedies, essential oils and homeopathy. As a child who suffered from reoccurring infections and allergies, she has a special place in her heart for her pediatric clients and for those who have gone without answers for far too long. Holistic healing takes time and because of this, on average Dr. Karen spends a minimum of 90 minutes with all new clients and 60 minutes each time they return. Doing so allows her to get to know each and every one of them in order to customize and recognize plans that are best for them. Many of them are no longer diagnosed, have been able to return to work, have improved relationships with their loved ones and have become advocates for natural healing. Born and raised in Michigan, Karen moved to the Northeast for close to 20 years. During this time she met her husband of now 18 years and is blessed to be the mother of three children. When she is not helping clients, she can be found outside in her flower and herb gardens, playing with her dog, watching the NY Mets and Giants, cooking or just relaxing on the front porch.
