“ Danny The 18 hand Gentle Giant”
Meet Danny, (aka Diaper Dandy) was born on March 9, 2021 in Lexington KY and he was bred to race. Danny comes from great bloodlines, his sire is Klimt a $500k winner. Danny was bred amazingly for the track but ultimately, he only had one race and earned $167. It was Danny’s first and last race. Danny’s purpose was was another path entirely. I was in the market looking for another horse to add to my lesson program. My friend showed me a picture of a handsome chestnut gelding. Danny may not of won on the track but he sure won my heart. He was the spitting image of one of my favorite race horses, Secretariat. After much research I learned his great grandfather was Secretariat himself! Off to Lexington I went! I handled him and watched them saddle him. Since Danny was at a training facility I was unable to ride him myself. The jockey did amazing with him and Danny rode in a open field like a dream. $1600 later in June of 2024 he was mine.
Immediately I noticed his shoes were loose, so I had the farrier remove them. I also noticed a very small scar on his back left leg and yes I saw it briefly at the facility but paid no mind to it. He wasn’t lame and he looked like he needed some groceries. He wasn’t terribly skinny but he needed an extra 100 pounds. Again these were small things and nothing major. Little did I know Danny would take a huge turn for the worse.
I was feeding Danny a 12% sweet grain and began his training. About 3 months into his training I noticed he wasn’t gaining weight like he should have been, and I also noticed he became very sluggish and lame at times. This wasn’t normal behavior for a 3 year old thoroughbred. He should be thriving. I took him to the vet. They diagnosed him with pedal osteosis. Most thoroughbreds have this. This was a easy fix or so I thought. The vet recommended a hoof supplement and a set of shoes. I called my farrier and gave him the information he needed. We tried to trim him and Danny drug both the farrier and I all across the barnyard. He was obviously in pain and still loosing weight despite plenty of feed, and hay. I took him back to the vet for another evaluation. She did a hoof test to see if he was more lame on one hoof versus another. Her test was conclusive of the following: Pedal osteosis, unsound structure in the left hoof with no growth between the coffin bone and hoof wall his hoof was starting to collapse. Danny’s outcome didn’t look so good. If I couldn’t get this to stop, which the vet said very unlikely, Danny would have to be put down. I was devastated. I saw so many supplements that said they would be able to help, Osteo-Max, 100x, you name it these companies said they could fix it. I tried so many of them. Nothing worked. He continued to decline.
That’s when I reached out to my friend Kim. I had been crying, I didn’t want to have to put this sweet boy to sleep. She introduced me to Thrive feed. I was willing to try one last thing before doomsday hit for Danny. I really thought this was it for my sweet boy. After many prayers and not giving up on him, I decided to try Thrive.
On the first day there was a notable difference. Two weeks later he was able to walk without pain. A month later he stood quietly for the farrier and got a front set of shoes on. 3 months later we did a check up at the vet. The x rays showed growth between the coffin bone and hoof wall. He went from a .3 mm to a .75 mm. A huge difference. Danny began to look like a whole new horse. Then I had some financial set backs and I had to pause the Thrive feed and in June of 2026 Danny began to regress back into the same issues as before (laminitis, weight loss, poor absorption of nutrients, and gut distress). I struggled most of the summer on finances and had to make other sacrifices. Thrive was not going to be one of them Danny has began his journey again and this time he won’t be coming off of Thrive. He is steadily gaining weight, and all the other issues are reversing. He has come leaps and bounds and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this sweet boy. His new path will be one of my best lesson horses with the most quiet and calm demeanor a thoroughbred can have. Kim would buy him tomorrow as a beginner horse for her family if I would sell him.
