Trust isn’t built in big gestures. It’s built in marbles.
Brené Brown explained it to her daughter after a rough day in kindergarten. Trust is like a marble jar. Every time someone does something trustworthy, a marble goes in. Every time they don’t, marbles come out. And sometimes the whole jar shatters.
What makes the marbles go in is almost always small. A friend asking how your parent’s surgery went because she remembered it was coming up. Someone showing up with fresh flowers because they noticed yours had died. Nothing flashy. Just proof that someone was paying attention.
That’s the part worth sitting with. Feeling seen and cared about doesn’t come from the grand moments. It comes from consistent, thoughtful acts that tell someone, I noticed you.
It works the other way too. Every time you follow through, remember the detail, or check in without being asked, you’re putting marbles in someone else’s jar. And every time you cancel, forget, or let something slide, you’re taking a few out.
Take a minute to think about it from both sides. What small thing builds trust for you? And who in your life is waiting on a marble from you?
