I had the pleasure of being interviewed just recently and here it is:

Professional Interview Assignment by Quentin Close

Kinesiology professional: Jerry Conca- Personal Trainer

Interview Questions/Responses:
Q1: “What originally made you decide to become a personal trainer?”
- R1: “Hmm, I started training for myself to run my first marathon around 2006. As I was training to run my first marathon, I was in Gold’s Gym and as I was running and training I was watching the people in there and noticed that the people and even some of the personal trainers themselves didn’t know too much about personal training. And then, being curious about that led me to find out what they do. I found that I was a natural at it and I just sort of got into it that way.”
Q2: “Have requirements for becoming a personal trainer changed since you began your career?”
-R2: “That’s a great question, there are probably more certifications. The certification I got was the National Academy of Sports Medicine. There are maybe three or four more certifications that I’ve noticed in the last fifteen to twenty years that are recognized. So, that’s probably the biggest thing that’s changed.”
Q3: “What would you do differently knowing everything you know now?”
-R3: “The only thing that comes to mind to do differently is not so much what I’ve done professionally, which I feel good about, but what I should have done is I shouldn’t have run so much. I literally hurt my body and broke my body down. As a matter of fact, there was recently an interview with Tiger Woods, and he said that would be the number one thing for him too”.
Q4: “What is your educational background for personal training?”
-R4: “Thing is I’ve had millions of careers. Hmm, so I was semi-athletic as a kid and played some sports. But I was a sports fan big time and I always played baseball and coached baseball. I never got a Kinesiology degree, but I studied it. And from there, I went on to getting the National Academy of Sports Medicine [certification]. Then I took several courses in Gold’s gym and now I also have the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers and a number of different certifications, always continuing to learn”.
Q5: “Who were your mentor(s) in the field when you were first starting out”.
-R5 “That’s a good question too. When I started at Gold’s gym, like when I first started in my first three years, they had four or five of the most awesome trainers. And for whatever reason they left over time, but what was good about it was they were both male and female. There were typical people meaning regular people, and jocks, so you had a really good variety of people. Then, we even had specialty trainers like this one woman, Renee, who did basically just kinesiology and there was just so much variety I loved training there”.
Q6: “What advice would you give someone pursuing a career in personal training”?
-R6 “First thing’s first, when you meet someone that you want to train, care about them because then everything will come across naturally. Then, be knowledgeable about what you are doing because even if you care you might not know what the hell to do. So, if you care and you know then that’s perfect. And that goes with experience you know, just because you’re a young trainer doesn’t mean you are necessarily a bad trainer. That’s what makes you a better trainer is experience, but just try to get more experience on your own.”
