National Cancer Prevention Month 💙

According to the American Cancer Society, for most Americans who do not use tobacco, the most important cancer risk factors that can be changed are body weight, diet, and physical activity.

Having screening tests regularly may find breast, prostate, colorectal (colon) and lung cancers early, when treatment is likely to work best.

Today we honor Dr. William E. Allen Jr., the first African American Radiologist.
Among his many achievements, in 1974 Dr. Allen received the American College of Radiology’s Gold Medal, the highest honor in radiology, in recognition of a career in which he overcame prejudice to become an excellent clinical radiologist, a teacher of residents, medical students, and radiologic technologists; the founder of the radiology section of the National Medical Association. He made considerable advances in shaping radiology as a science and profession and worked tirelessly to increase access to education for other African Americans.

February is American Heart Month ♥️

This is the perfect time to learn about your risk for heart disease. Radiology exams like a coronary CT calcium scan can detect calcium deposits in the arteries of the heart. It is one of the many risk factors your physician uses to determine if you have an increased risk of a cardiac event.

The need for blood is critical! The American Red Cross has faced a reduction of donations due to the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. One blood donation can save up to three lives.

It's also important to donate if you have the COVID-19 antibodies as this convalescent plasma is being evaluated as a possible treatment for currently ill COVID-19 patients! Your donation could help save the lives of people battling this disease!

Can AI spot breast cancer years before radiologists?

We were happy to see this study in AuntMinnie, thank you for sharing!

Researchers from RadNet subsidiary DeepHealth have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm that has successfully detected breast cancer on screening mammography, in some cases as early as two years before it was diagnosed during conventional interpretation, according to research published online January 11 in Nature Medicine.

As most insurance plans reset on January 1st, now is a key time to make sure you are getting the most value out of your health plan. If you’ve met your plan’s deductible or out-of-pocket maximum, most of your appointments should be fully covered or cost significantly less. If so, now is the time to schedule important screenings such as:

- Mammography
- Bone Densitometry (DEXA)
- Low Dose CT Lung Cancer Screening
- Coronary Artery CT Calcium Scoring
- Prostate MRI

Remember, your health is essential, do not delay important imaging screenings and tests.

This year more than ever it’s vital that we properly, and frequently, wash our hands to stop the transmission of harmful germs. Let’s all do our part to keep each other healthy. 👏🏼

The CDC recommends following these five steps when washing our hands:

1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

In these extraordinary times, it’s more important than ever to be kind to yourself and make self-care a priority.

Excessive stress can lead to an increase in a variety of health problems and depression, but self-care helps to sharpen mental and physical health, betters self-esteem, helps with stress management and leads to better wellbeing overall. Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. Self-care is not self-indulgent. Self-care is not selfish. Here are a few ways to incorporate self-care into your daily life.
