Remembering 9-11 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
On Monday, August 21, 2017, a solar eclipse will be visible across North America. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon blocks any part of the sun. Even though the moon will be blocking parts of the sun, it still isn't safe to look directly at the sun.
Some interesting facts about the eclipse:
This is the first solar eclipse visible in the continental US since 1979
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely blocks the sun. The path of totality is only about 70 miles wide from coast-to-coast. Outside of this, viewers will only experience a partial eclipse.
Southern Californians will be able to see only a partial eclipse.
The moon will begin crossing the sun around 9:05 am Pacific Standard Time in Thousand Oaks. It will take about 90 minutes for the moon to finish crossing the sun.
For more information about what your view of the eclipse will look like, please visit https://eclipse.aas.org/eclipse-america/when-where and http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-what-time-does-eclipse-start-20170818-story.html.
Below are some tips to keeping your eyes safe during the eclipse:
Only directly view the solar eclipse through special eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewers.
DO NOT TAKE OFF YOUR ECLIPSE GLASSES AT ANY TIME WHEN LOOKING AT THE SUN IF YOU ARE OBSERVING IN CALIFORNIA.
The only time it's safe to remove your eclipse glasses to look at the sun is when the moon is completely blocking the sun. This will only occur if you are in the 70-mile strip in the path of totality. This will not occur in Southern California.
Regular sunglasses will not protect your eyes. Eclipse glasses are about a thousand times darker than regular sunglasses!
Make sure your eclipse glasses are safe. The list of reputable vendors is located here: https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters
As a quick reference, you should not be able to see shaded lamps or any light fixtures through your eclipse glasses. If you can, do not use your eclipse glasses to view the eclipse.
Cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses before looking into the sun. Look away from the sun before removing them.
If you don't have eclipse glasses, please click this link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATz09bOeNP0) to find out alternative ways of experiencing this phenomenon.
