Love our deep discussions throughout the SOYA 200YTT Training. This exam question related to the Gunas and her answer was beautiful. When focusing on gardening, she notes the Tamasic energy of inertia, adding her Rajasic action of gardening and Sattvic qualities of passion, working towards a future harvest that, too, will be Sattvic in nature creates balance and tranquility in her own life ❤️. Love having these applied to our lives in a way we can truly grasp the concepts.

Today, the day after Guru Purnima, I'd like to offer to you my interpretation and explanation of the "Guru", the first and how the Vedic teachings were shared.
In my humble opinion, a Guru is one who has been blessed with the opportunity of receiving wisdom, knowledge and the teachings given to us from the Divine, Brahman to live life in accordance with the energy of the Universe. A Guru becomes a conduit of this knowledge and wisdom and therefore, it becomes their Dharma to pass spiritual wisdom and knowledge unto those that seek without changing, without altering, sharing with love, and generosity all that they can of this beautiful wisdom. Gurus plant seeds, shed light, share love, compassion and grace with those on the path of seeking spiritual knowledge.
These teachings, Yoga, were first delivered to Lord Shiva through transmission as a conduit of the Divine. These very specific teachings were then passed down by Lord Shiva to the Saptarishi, 7 Great Sages who were born of the mind of Brahman. It is said that these Great Sages are those that make the sun rise and shine! They were placed here in this Universe to guide humanity. The responsibility of a Guru is a great one. It is humbling in every way. It is a blessing in every way. It is work every day to study, to follow the Vedic principles of these teachings and the duty to share them as given to them.
My hope is that this sheds light on the importance of these teachings and the importance of sharing them selflessly, with love, respect and reverence for the connection to the Universe and Brahman.

Traditionally, the festival is celebrated by Buddhists in honor of the Buddha who gave his first sermon on this day at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India. In the yogic tradition, the day is celebrated as the occasion when Shiva became the first guru, as he began the transmission of Yoga to the Saptarishis.
I would like to pay tribute to my "Guru's" on this auspicious day for sharing their wisdom, love and knowledge of these teachings, with me as I continue on this spiritual path. Without their caring enough to share, this work would be lost to me. I have so much love and gratitude for each of my teachers, Jenny Lintvedt, Marion Mugs McConnell and Yogacharya Dr Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani! Blessings, love and so much light to each of you as you continue to bless myself and so many others on your Dharmic path. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
It’s the International Day of Yoga.
"You now attain a peaceful place, doing daily sadhana" is a mnemonic taught to our class by our incredible teacher Terri McDermott, RYT-500, a fellow Yoga Alliance Board member who has been teaching and practicing for more than 20 years.
Perhaps most notably, Terri studied under Marion Mugs McConnell, the Founder of SOYA Yoga, and author of Letters from the Yoga Masters. Also a fellow Yoga Alliance Board Member.
Learning from these two women has been incredible. Must also shout-out Chloe Haddad, Founder of the Fit Pit, and also a badass 500-level teacher who taught me so much.
The Mnemonic helps you remember the great sage Patanjali's 8 limbs of yoga:
1. YAMAS. Spiritual restraints. 5 dont’s. Ahimsa, or non-violence being the first. "Avoid these. Violence being the first."
2. NIYAMAS. Spiritual observances. 5 ethical and moral practices. "Do these."
3. ASANA. All of this glorious Hatha yoga to open up our body through countless postures. Each vastly, infinitely deep.
4. PRANAYAMA. Breathing techniques. Filling our bodies with prana (life force energy) to help us move beyond our senses to achieve…
5. PRATYHARA. The interiorized state. The bridge of silence that moves us from the lower, "outer" limbs of yoga above, to the higher, "interior" limbs.
6. DHARANA. Focused concentration. Yogananda teaches to maintain a single-pointed concentration on God, through the portal of the Kutastha Chaitanya, our third eye, or Ajna chakra.
7. DYHANA. Full-absorption in Spirit through meditation. This, to me, is the entire goal of yoga. Right there in the name. Yoga means "union", or "yoke". Connecting these little bodily circuits to an Infinite Superconductor.
8. SAMADHI. We may trip over that Oneness we crave— though we may learn to live in that ecstatic bliss, peace, and harmony. Many levels of Samadhi, only ever attained by faithfully climbing the lower 7 limbs.
Yoga always has been, and always will be my path.

With over 20 years of combined experience, Terri McDermott, ERYT-500, continues to pursue an active interdisciplinary career in health and wellness through the teachings and study of holistic care, meditation and yoga.
Education in Health, Wellness and Yoga
A Michigan native, Terri received her C.M.A. in Medical Assistance through training provided in Royal Oak, Michigan and her RYT 200 through Jenny Lintvedt, Yoga Teacher Trainer in Traverse City, Michigan. Throughout her continued studies and employment in this area, Terri has taken further trainings with known teachers such as Sean Corn, Joe Barnett, Kathryn Buddig, Dr. James Lawrence and recently completed her RYT 500 through studies with Mugs McConnell in a 300-hour program over the course of 2019-2020 and is currently on faculty as a Lead Teacher Trainer for South Okanagon Yoga Academy.

Terri understands the importance of incorporating wellness into all aspects of life and works with her private clients to create balance. This includes developing mastery of one’s physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being through various disciplines and healing modalities such as deep stretching, breathing, core work, meditation, reflection, nutrition, stress management and wellness coaching. She is an Ambassador for Divine Warrior Goddess Trainings and has been successful in facilitating these trainings to numerous women throughout Traverse City, Michigan. She feels there is great work to be done in bringing together women and reminding them of the skills they inherently possess and removing those layers and restrictions society has imposed so there is movement forward with their life’s work.
Her work at the Cowell Family Cancer Center increased her passion for working with individuals overcoming illness and fear has helped her in her own life by driving her further into studies in multiple areas of healing.
She currently divides her time in Traverse City, Michigan teaching and working privately, as well as, in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Passion for Wellness and Community
As a child, the seed for yoga was planted when Terri attended her first yoga classes in a fellow elementary school student’s basement learning yoga from a dedicated mom. That seed took root and continues to grow strong. As she continued on her journey, those roots reached out, took her on a path of spiritual growth, and coaxed within her the need to continue to learn about the intricacies of the human body, our vessel in this life, the mind and spirit.
She currently serves as a board member for the organization, Yoga Alliance, Arlington, VA and continues to find ways to bring her teachings to her communities, both in Florida and Michigan. An annual retreat “Pura Vida Yoga Retreat” is provided and taught by her in Costa Rica always attempting to immerse a larger group to the concepts of yoga, meditation, pranayama and self-study.

Terri has been practicing yoga throughout her life and teaching yoga since 2012. She is the founder of Svastha and Peaceful Poses, whose mission is to teach the incorporation of wellness concepts, yoga and meditation into the daily lives and build daily routines with her students. She teaches multiple types of classes such as Restorative, Yin, Detox, Hot and Gentle yoga, SUP, along with meditation, and leads multiple workshops and facilitates groups of women in her communities fostering a tribe of sorts who grow and learn together. She specializes in one on one teaching and coaching based on client needs and creating individualized plans for students to include all aspects of wellness.
