I cannot believe it has been one year since the Miles That Matter 5K and festival.
It is long overdue for an update on where all of your support has gone.
Because of this community, we raised over $15,000, brought 700 menstrual cups into Tanzania, are printing around 600 empowHER workbooks, and are now working with three local NGOs in Tanzania and Kenya. Through this program, we expect to empower over 700 girls with menstrual health education, reusable products, and resources focused on confidence, health, financial literacy, and leadership.
This past June, I traveled to Tanzania and Kenya with my family and friends to help bring this mission to life. Our goal was to bring the cups into Tanzania, train our local NGO partners, and distribute the empowHER workbooks.
Things did not go exactly as planned. An unexpected customs issue prevented the cups from entering Tanzania while we were there. After continuing to work with our partners, the cups were eventually transported into Tanzania by ground. We are now completing virtual trainings with our local NGO partners on the cups and workbooks so they can begin implementing the program in their communities.
This experience has reminded me that international work takes patience, flexibility, and, most importantly, listening to the people and organizations you are working alongside.
I am so grateful to everyone who donated, sponsored, volunteered, shared Miles That Matter, offered mentorship, made connections, or simply believed in this idea. Every person helped turn something that started as a small idea into something much bigger.
One year later, the 5K is over, but the work is still moving forward.
Thank you for being part of Miles That Matter. This is only the beginning.
