The Dementia Journey Educational Series
Understanding Brain Changes & Managing Sundowning - Meadow Lake Senior Living
What is happening inside the brain when we see changes in behavior in someone living with dementia?
Home-Aid’s Tiffany Clements, C.D.S., CARES Dementia Specialist, recently presented an hour-long educational talk and Q&A at Meadow Lake Senior Living as part of the Dementia Journey Educational Series. This video shares just a few snippets from Understanding Brain Changes & Managing Sundowning presentation.
During the presentation, Tiffany explored different areas of the brain and how changes in those areas can affect memory, judgment, emotions, perception, communication, sleep, and behavior. We also discussed many practical ways families and caregivers can help mitigate sundowning by looking at the whole day—not just what happens when behaviors begin.
One area highlighted was the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)—a tiny but important part of the brain that helps regulate our internal body clock. Light is one of the most important signals the SCN receives. Light entering through our eyes helps tell this internal clock whether it is daytime or nighttime, making light an important part of supporting our sleep-wake rhythm.
The Stress Bucket demonstrated how brain changes, physical needs, stressors, environmental factors, and everyday demands can accumulate throughout the day. Some we cannot change, while others we may be able to reduce or adapt. Sometimes what appears to “cause” a behavior is simply the last thing the brain had room to handle.
Throughout the hour, we explored ways to reduce that load—including light, movement, meaningful activity, routine, meeting physical needs, adjusting the environment and changing our approach. We also discussed what caregivers can do when the “bucket” is already overflowing.
The video ends by returning to LIGHT and some of the research surrounding its role in supporting the brain’s internal clock.
Thank you to Meadow Lake Senior Living for hosting us and continuing to provide opportunities for meaningful dementia education in our community.
