"It fills the sails of boats that are waiting,
Waiting to sail your worries away"
These lyrics are from the song "Hushabye Mountain" a beautiful lullaby from the 1968 film, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," one of my favorite movies of all time. As a child, I would watch it over and over, and it still holds a very special place in my heart.
The plot centers around an eccentric inventor and single father, played by the incomparable Dick Van D**e, who is struggling to provide for his two young children and raise them on his own terms. Indulging his children's wishes, he spends the last of his earnings on an antique, junkyard race car and beautifully refurbishes it, only to discover that the car has magical powers, taking them all on an incredible adventure.
The scene in which this song is performed makes it all the more meaningful. His children have just offered all of their "treasures" to their father in order to help fund his inventions. In reality, they are mainly worthless trinkets, but their selfless act of giving touches their father deeply. He tells them not to worry and sings this lullaby to them as they fall asleep.
The scene is a profound moment that many parents can resonate with. As a father, he reassures his children that everything will be alright, even though he himself is full uncertainty and doubt. It speaks to the incredible strength parents hold, and their ability to rise above their own emotions to provide safety and security for their children. It's a touching moment and a hauntingly beautiful song. And as you may have already guessed, the inspiration for the name of my business, Hushabye Mountain Maternity Services.
If you haven't seen the film, give it watch! You won't be disappointed 😊
