Sometimes community engagement develops naturally.
We went out for a bike ride and ended up enjoying the Halloween decorations throughout the neighborhood. 🎃🚲
There was no need to turn it into a formal activity.
The bike ride provided movement and time outside, while the decorations added something seasonal and interesting to notice along the way.
For individuals with IDD, meaningful community experiences can be simple, flexible, and shaped by what captures the person’s attention in the moment. 💙

Sometimes good support doesn't look like much from the outside.
And that's important.
Supporting someone with IDD does not mean constantly prompting, directing, correcting, or doing something for them.
There are also moments when good support means:
being available,
giving appropriate space,
allowing enough time,
observing,
and stepping in only when support is actually needed.
One of the most important things a DSP can learn is not only how to help—
but also when to step back.
Support should make room for autonomy. 💙

Yesterday’s mall outing was pretty simple:
walk around, explore different stores, and see what caught his attention.
There wasn’t a requirement to buy something or complete a specific activity.
Sometimes community engagement can simply mean having time to browse, explore, change direction, and spend a little longer somewhere that looks interesting.
For individuals with IDD, ordinary experiences like this can provide room for preferences and choices to show themselves naturally. 💙

Dinner tonight was grilled cheese with veggies on the side. 🥪🥦
Sometimes meal support is pretty straightforward:
serve something familiar the person enjoys, while still making sure the meal includes the foods they need.
For individuals with IDD, supporting nutrition doesn’t always have to mean reinventing the entire meal.
Sometimes it’s simply finding a balance between preference and nutrition.
Comfort food can still have a balanced side. 💙

When one of your favorite dinners is right there on the menu, the decision is pretty simple. 🌭🍟
Hot dogs with cheese and pub mustard, plus fries, are one of this client’s favorite meals.
Sometimes community outings are made even better by having familiar food options that the person already knows and enjoys.
Choice, comfort, and a good dinner all in one. 💙

Movie night at Cinema Cafe for Avengers: Endgame. 🎬
For individuals with IDD, community life includes the same ordinary recreational experiences many of us enjoy:
movies, favorite restaurants, hobbies, familiar places, and simply having something fun to look forward to.
Sometimes the outing is meaningful because the person genuinely enjoys it. 💙

Quiet spaces and busy spaces can both be meaningful.
A quiet environment may support focus, comfort, and predictability.
A busy environment may be exciting, stimulating, and engaging.
The important question is not:
“Which type of space is better?”
It’s:
“How does this person respond here?”
For individuals with IDD, good support includes observing the person, not just judging the setting.
If the environment is not a good fit, we can adjust the timing, location, length of the visit, or level of support.
The right environment is the one that works for the individual. 💙

One of his favorite parts of the nighttime routine is a cup of chamomile tea. ☕
It may seem like a small detail, but those little preferences can become meaningful parts of someone’s day.
For individuals with IDD, familiar routines can offer comfort, predictability, and opportunities to enjoy things they genuinely prefer.
Sometimes person-centered support is simply knowing:
“This is something he looks forward to.” 💙

Sticker art in progress. ✨
What I like about activities like this is how naturally they create opportunities for choice.
Which sticker to use.
Where to place it.
What to add next.
When to stop.
For individuals with IDD, creative activities can support engagement and self-expression without every step needing to be directed.
Sometimes the best thing we can do is provide the materials and let the person create. 💙

If you’re struggling to think of meaningful community activities for someone you support, try changing the starting question.
Instead of:
“Where should we take them?”
ask:
“What do they already enjoy?”
Then map outward.
Someone who loves music may enjoy concerts, karaoke, music stores, classes, festivals, or local performances.
Someone interested in animals, cooking, sports, books, art, or cars will create a completely different opportunity map.
The goal is not to fit the person into an activity list. The goal is to build opportunities around the person. 💙
