Good morning!!!!!!!
If you work all the time and never really take a vacation, start a new ritual that honors the original spirit of Labor Day. Give yourself the day off. Don't go into work. Shut off your phone, computer and other electronic devices connecting you to your daily grind. Then-go to a BBQ, like the original participants did over a century ago and celebrate having at least one day off from work during the year!
Do you know what Labor Day is? I wanted to share a few things...
The original meaning of Labor Day:
Many people view Labor Day as a simple retail sale or the end of summer rather than a tribute to worker rights and solidarity.
Harsh Conditions-
In the late 1800's, workers faced 12 hour and maybe more, long days with no weekends or paid time off.
The first Labor Day occurred in 1882 in NYC under the direction of that city's Central Labor Union.
The organizers of the first Labor Day were interested in creating an event that brought different types of workers together to meet each other and recognize their common interests.
However-they had a large problem:
No government or company recognized the 1st Monday of September as a day off work.
The issue was solved temporarily by declaring a one day strike in the city. All striking workers were expected to march in a parade and then eat and drink at a giant picnic aterward. Workers felt they were spending too many hours and days on the job.
In 1830-manufacturing workers were putting in 70-hour weeks on an average. These long workng hours caused many union organizers to focus on winning a shorter 8 hour day. They focused on also, getting workers more days off, such as Labor Day holiday and reducing work week to just 6 days. Surprisingly many politicians and business owners were in favor of giving workers more time off. Wanna know why???? Because workers who had no free time were not able to spend their wages on traveling, entertainment or dining out.
Today-Labor Day is no longer about trade unionists marching down the street with banners and their tools of trade. Instead, it is a confused holiday with no associated rituals.
If you are working, thank you... I know that some jobs do not allow the business to be closed....But please do me a favor... take one day somewhere in the week and celebrate a NO LABOR DAY!!!! rest and enjoy and make some memories!!!!!!
