‘The brain does not want the body to expend its resources unless we have a reasonable chance of success. Our physical strength is not accessible to us if the brain does not believe in the outcome, because the worst possible thing for humans to do is to expend all of our resources and fail. If we do not believe we can make it, we will not get the resources we need to make it. The moment we believe, the gates are opened, and a flood of energy is unleashed. Both hope and despair are self-fulfilling prophecies.’-Shlomo Breznitz

Amazing the capabilities of the body when you flip the belief switch

Me and coach Dan John @coachdanjohn having some fun together on stage at the @strengthmatters summit

Blast from the past

He’s been a big influence in my life especially when it comes to understanding the power of basics, fundamentals, and simplicity

One of my favorites he said: ‘People don’t realize how difficult it is to make something simple.’

That’s because making it simple comes from understanding it, not learning it.

Thanks coach

The lack of something that can kill you the fastest is what you need to pay attention to first. 😃

Focus on all three. But in this order...
1. Breathing
2. Hydration
3. Nutrition

That’s the fundamental checklist. Now add other numbers. I suggest #4 be movement 👊

‘Trauma is not readily recognized or acknowledged in our culture, and even when it is, we are too often expected to get over it just because it is behind us.

This denial from the outside undermines a person’s sense of self and reality, making it very difficult to go on living as if the world makes sense or life has meaning. Trauma has to be acknowledged, recognized and brought out of secrecy and denial.’ -Anais Salibian

‘The development of symptoms depends on a variety of factors and cannot be predicted by the nature of the event itself. Sometimes a seemingly benign circumstance can be traumatic. Much depends on predisposition, previous history, timing and context.’ - Green 2014

I wonder how it’s gonna go after this pandemic and lockdown? My guess is you are gonna see decades of repercussions. When it’s over, it’s not really over. Mental health is it’s own type of fitness program. Gotta work on it daily @i_am_inception

When something resonates with me. I post it for you. Perhaps it will do the same for you

Full quote:

“Who said that the bamboo is more beautiful than the maple tree and maple tree is more valuable than the bamboo because it gives out maple syrup? Does the bamboo feel jealous of the maple tree because it is bigger and its leaves change color? The idea of trees comparing themselves to others is ridiculous as should humans comparing themselves to one another. We must compare our growth to who we were yesterday not to the growth of another. Everyone is incomparably unique.”

Be your own tree. And in a side note: Tress are gorgeous

“Spending time in the forest induces a state of physiologic relaxation.”

“Recent studies have also linked nature to symptom relief for health issues like heart disease, depression, cancer, anxiety and attention disorders.”

“The quiet atmosphere, beautiful scenery, good smells and fresh, clean air in forests all contribute to the effects.”

“Trees’ natural fragrance may also play a role, as some studies have shown that phytoncides lower blood pressure by quelling the body’s fight-or-flight response, which stresses the body.”

EXPOSURE TO IT CAN INCREASE AWE: Experiences of awe attune people to things larger than themselves,” says Piff. “They cause individuals to feel less entitled, less selfish, and to behave in more generous and helping ways.” The benefits of awe are physical too: regularly experiencing moments of awe has been linked to lower levels of inflammatory compounds in the body.”

In short‼️ Find nature. Spend time there

That’s the guy that created the word stress. He’s kinda smart. Wrote the first book on it and did the first research on it.

Everybody in medicine said he was nuts for looking at stress as a cause of disease. They always do that to the people who go against dogma and try to think differently. Keep that in mind. If that happens do you keep going it means you’re onto something

What’s the keyword in his quote ? Reaction. Choose your response. That influences the chemicals your body produces

Pain is a request for change. A change in your habits and behaviors

And that only happens with new awareness. Pain definitely makes you aware

It’s actually a really smart strategy by the body. Pain is the last thing you feel, not the first. It’s the final kick in the butt. Pain is an attention getter

It’s telling it was time to do something different. What is that difference? I don’t know. How about you just start by doing something different

Symptoms are signals for help, not suppression

Treat symptoms so you don’t suffer, but never forget the creamy filling cause is always deeper. That’s why it’s the creamy filling

Example:
Tingling and numbness in the hands and feet from poor breathing habits. Very common. Improve breathing and they change

Or cold hands and feet from a congested and overburdened liver that is struggling in one of its two phases of detoxification. Enhance detoxification pathways and pump the liver and they change

Always ask why. And when you get the answer ask why again? It’s called the Five Whys. After the 5th why you will usually find the creamy filling

No system in the body ever works alone. Never gets injured alone. Never heals alone. Think bigger. Think better. Think systems

The body is an ecosystem. The systems thrive based on each other, not solidarity

‘When cells malfunction, thousands of symptoms can be produced. Which symptoms depend on your particular combination of deficiencies and toxicities and your unique genetic makeup.’ -Raymond Francis

Go after the cell, not the symptom

There are two reason cells malfunction:
Deficiency and toxicity

They don’t get what they need, get too much of something or can’t get rid of waste after they used something

You don’t heal by repairing old cells you heal by making new ones

What raw materials are they getting and after they get them where does the waste go? Two big questions

Can’t just focus on the nutrient part. Gotta include the removal part. Three big places to begin:
1. Lymph
2. Liver
3. Lungs

As my friend Kelly @thereadystate says: garbage out, groceries in

The solution doesn’t have to be complicated to work

‘We argue that to consider the impact of lymphatic biology in any given immunological interaction is a key step toward integrating immunology with organ physiology and ultimately many complex pathologies.’

I agree with them 100%‼️If you don’t have optimal lymph function you don’t have optimal immune system function

70-80% of your immune system is in your gut. And most of your lymph resides in your gut. That’s no accident. Nature is pretty damn smart in her design

When anything breaks through that gut lining your lymphatic system is the first one there to greet it

The most important and neglected system you are not currently taking care of to feel better. The lymphatic system

Extend that exhale you’ll relax more

Vagal tone refers to activity of the vagus nerve, the 10th cranial nerve and a fundamental component of the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system. This branch of the nervous system is not under conscious control and is largely responsible for the regulation of several body compartments at rest

And it lowers the stress response

‘The tongue position changes with emotions and state of mind, thus becoming an instrument for psychological observation; usually, an anterior tongue placement will occur with a feeling of fear.’ - Sharma M, Pathak A

Lots of that going on in the world today. FEAR😟Most people probably walking around with tongues sticking out anterior

The tongue position influences the whole body. The tongue is part of the anatomical structures that cover the occiputocervical area (back of head) the anterior area of the neck, and the muscles of mastication, including the temporomandibular joint as well as the three layers of the cervical facia.’

What does that mean? Emotions drive the tongue which drives the body which can cause you pain and poor posture. It’s a muscle like any other muscle and will adapt to its demand and position.

The tongue changes pain, and posture and how you move. Maybe even those headaches and TMJ issues that won’t leave you alone? Or the tight neck and trap muscles you always need to get massaged. Check out that tongue

Emotions matter in everything. That’s why you’re not a rock 😜

One of the first places we look with people who have chronic pain is the motion, movement, structure, and appearance of the tongue.

But my tongue doesn’t hurt? 👅 Exactly, now you’re catching on on how to look at the body

Tongue exercises can do wonders for you mentally and physically. Pay a visit your tongue. It’s been waiting

What kind of exercises. We will be posting some this week. Stay tuned

A phrase I often use in response to people who are in chronic pain and I find the cause far removed from where they feel it

They have suffered for years and gotten endless therapies to the site of pain and supposed area of damage and dysfunction

Research tells us that pain does not equate to the level of tissue damage

Happens in back pain all the time. “My back is a mess, it must be causing my pain. I am not imagining this pain.”

‘Your pain is real, it’s just not coming from your back.’

Pain is a request for change, not a bullseye mark for where to treat

Note: This doesn’t always apply. Sometimes it is that easy. Treat where it hurts and stuff feels better. The question then becomes: for how long?

‘A normal inflammatory response is characterized by the temporally restricted up regulation of inflammatory activity that occurs when a threat is present and that resolves once the threat has passed. However, the presence of certain social, psychological, environmental and biological factors has been linked to the prevention or resolution of acute inflammation and intern the promotion of a state of systemic chronic inflammation.’ -Chronic inflammation in the etiology of disease across the lifespan

That means there’s a lot to pain besides where it hurts. What if your brain doesn’t believe the perceived threat has passed????

Tip: Look everywhere in the body and mind when assessing. No system in the body ever works alone. Never gets injured alone. Never heals alone. Think bigger. Think better. Think systems

Flashback post. Forgot I have over 7K Instagram posts. I’ve said a few things over the years. Lol This one is from five years ago

I think people are still saying breath is important. So I’m guessing it’s important😀

Easiest single tip I give to change breathing: Ok I’ll give ya two
1. ✔️Become more aware of it. Awareness automatically changes it
2. ✔️Breathe from your nose not your mouth. You’ll use the diaphragm more without even thinking about it. Win

Ok I’ll add one more. I can’t help it.
Massage your sternum. It’s a neural reflex point for your diaphragm and the pylorus part of your stomach. It’s the opening from the stomach into the duodenum (small intestine). Stomach issues change breathing. Big time 👌

‘Venous and lymphatic congestion of the head leads to symptoms of cephalgia and anxiety.’
-Dr. Micheal Kuchera

Why? Think blood flow and nerves. Just look at the amount of blood flow up to your cranium there 😄

What’s cephalgia? The medical term for a headache. Why can’t they just call it a freaking headache⁉️They so over complicate everything. Must be some status thing 😃

What can you do to help anxiety or a headache knowing this? Do these three things

Lymph and veins drain to the collarbone region. Use that info
1. ✔️Place a warm cloth or heat pack (not too hot!) over each collar bone for a few minutes. Helps open up the stagnation
2. ✔️Massage, tap, rub each collarbone. Under, on and above each for 1-minute
3. ✔️Take 2-minutes and breathe in and out via your nose to pump the diaphragm as you lightly massage your belly button

BONUS: You may really like placing heat at C7-T1 at the bottom of the neck for a few minutes. That will zero in on the lymph that drains from the traps to the neck

🔹Have fun. Now come to our workshops and webcasts and membership site to learn even more strategies

This is a topic that you may think everyone knows, especially after you know it. I’m here to tell you MOST humans don’t know it. They have no idea

Do not take this information for granted. Big mistake! You need to share it with everyone

The curse of knowledge is thinking everyone else knows what you know.

You will rarely hear about the topic of breathing in medicine. Right along with Lymphatics. If you think that’s wrong it’s probably because you are living in a little bubble of people who already know about it.

This is when people ask me what’s the best way to breathe. And my answer is always the same. All breathing techniques work for someone. I don’t believe in a best way to breathe, I believe in different ways to breathe

The easiest way to begin? You just need to become more conscious of breathing

🔹One of my favorite quotes from Gilbert 2002:
‘When breathing becomes conscious, it tends to alter: attention changes it.’

Pay attention to it. Where are you breathing from? Chest. Neck. Abdomen. Sides. Back. Mouth. Nose. Deep. Shallow. Time.
Pick one to start 👍

The keywords:
Conscious. Attention. Changes.

Goodnight everyone. We appreciate each and everyone of you and are grateful for the comments, likes, shares, messages, and interactions. We will see you tomorrow. Much love
