Earthquakes are real concerns for California homeowners. A recent USGS study puts the odds of having a magnitude 6.7 (the same magnitude as the 1994 Northridge Earthquake) or greater quake in California at more than 99% during the next 30 years. Most homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover damage and loss caused by earthquakes. Many people imagine that earthquake coverage is too costly, choosing to personally absorb the risk of major damage to their home and property. But that doesn’t have to be the case. You may be surprised at how affordable earthquake insurance can be.
Earthquake Coverage & Deductible Options

Comprehensive earthquake coverage offers complete protection for your home. This means dwelling, personal property and loss of use (if displaced from your residence). It is the most viable option for families who own homes and reside there day-to-day. Standard coverage offers complete protection for your dwelling but limited protection for your personal property and loss of use. It is only slightly less expensive than comprehensive coverage and very similar to what is labeled “CEA” or California Earthquake Authority. Standard coverage works great for property rented to others. Deductible options include everything from 5% - 25% depending on the location and condition of the home itself. Depending on the square footage of your home and the coverage chosen, earthquake premiums can range anywhere from $500 - $1500 annually. The average comprehensive policy is between $700 and $900 per year. If you have assets to protect and you want to limit your exposure to partial or total loss, this investment is well worth it. Payment options include: full-pay, 3-pay, and 10-pay plans with reoccurring credit card.

Do you have enough liability limits on your auto or motorcycle policy? I re-wrote a client who had 25/50 with limits of 250/500. Another vehicle turned in front of her Harley and from the ICU she thanked me for increasing her limits since she gets underinsured motorist...the other party had much lower limits. 90% of all Americans are underinsured?
California small employers are currently required to be given a risk adjustment factor (raf) that is between .90 and 1.10 that is applied to the standard 1.0 raf plan rates. Generally smaller groups and unhealthy groups are given the 1.10 raf (10% surcharge) while larger healthier groups are given the .90 raf (10% discount). Now, for a limited time, these four carriers will GUARANTEE (call be for the few exclusions) their lowest .90 raf rates to firms with only 5 to 6 enrolled employees!! Regardless of health conditions or your past renewal date!
There is 22% difference between a .90 raf and a 1.1raf so if you or your friend has been given a 1.1 raf for their company a $5,000 current premium at a 1.1 raf level would cost only $4,090 at a .90 raf! This would mean a $10,909 annual savings since rates would be locked in for 12 months.
But what if you just renewed your plan during the first of 2013, why should you consider this limited opportunity? The answer is because of "2014 Health Reform". You see, your renewal after Dec 31, 2013 will not have any rafs. All employers with less than 51 employees will be charged the same rates. And what do you think will happen to health insurance rates in 2014? Ask me and I will email you a recent article with the shocking rate adjustments. Why have your renewal January 1, 2014 and be charged the higher rates (with no .90 raf) early when you can lock in your low .90 rates (12 month lock) for a June effective date?
