Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how we talk about perimenopause…

There is so much information out there about what women should be doing during this transition, including what to eat, how to exercise, which supplements to take, and what symptoms to expect.

And so much of the messaging seems to focus on everything that might go wrong. The idea that this transition is going to turn your world upside down. And by “world,” I mean your body, your mind, and everything in between.

But what if we approached it a little differently?

Instead of viewing this stage as something your body is doing to you, what if we saw it as an opportunity to tune in a little more closely to what your body needs?

Maybe that means prioritizing nourishment and recovery, getting enough protein and fiber, incorporating a greater variety of plants, finding movement that supports rather than exhausts you, paying closer attention to sleep, or finding ways to support your nervous system.

And often, it means zooming out and looking at the bigger picture. Because how you feel during this transition may be influenced by more than hormonal changes alone.

Vesi and I will be exploring this perspective at our upcoming workshop on October 25th, Mood, Microbiome & Midlife.

If this resonates with you, we would love to have you join us!

When did everyday things start feeling so much harder? 🫣

If you’re a woman going through perimenopause, you may feel like the things that used to come easily suddenly require so much more effort.

Maybe it’s harder to focus, stay organized, get through your to-do list, or keep up with everyday responsibilities.

This might be the result of the many hormonal changes happening during perimenopause.

Or, it may be that these hormonal changes are uncovering or exacerbating ADHD symptoms you’ve been able to manage up until now.

This is because hormonal changes during perimenopause can influence attention, mood, sleep, and executive functioning. For women with ADHD, this transition can bring new challenges and questions about what their brains and bodies need.

That’s why I’m excited to join an amazing panel of experts for Focus, Function & ADHD in Perimenopause & Menopause, part of the Integrative Health Speaker Series.

During my presentation, Feeding the ADHD Brain: Nutrition, Executive Function & Real-Life Eating, we’ll explore the role nutrition can play in supporting brain health and how to make eating more manageable when executive functioning, energy, appetite, and daily demands get in the way.

We will also explore ADHD in midlife women, navigating overwhelm and capacity, and turning insight into everyday habits with these incredible women:

🎤 Danielle Cogliano, PMHNP-BC
🎤 Sherri Crowley, LICSW
🎤 Carol Perlman, PhD

I hope you’ll join us!

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how we talk about perimenopause...

There is so much information out there about what women should be doing during this transition—what to eat, how to exercise, which supplements to take, and what symptoms to expect.

The messaging can feel pretty consistent: you’re going to go through this transition, and your world is going to be turned upside down. And by “world,” I mean your body, your mind, and everything in between.

But I think there’s another way to look at it...

Instead of seeing this stage as something your body is doing to you, what if we approached it as a time to pay a little closer attention to what your body may be asking for?

Maybe that means more nourishment, more recovery, adequate protein and fiber, greater plant diversity, movement that supports rather than exhausts you, better attention to sleep, and support for your nervous system.

And often, it means looking at the bigger picture. This includes considering the many factors that may be influencing how you’re feeling and how your body is responding to this transition.

I explore this more in my latest article, Mood, Microbiome & Perimenopause: Why This Transition Is About More Than Hormones

✨I will also be diving into this at an upcoming workshop on October 25th. If any of this resonates, I would love for you to join me! (More details coming soon!)

I’m excited to share something new from my friend and integrative health colleague, Beverly Mazza, BSN, RN, NC-BC of Purely Present Health.

Bev just launched the Integrative Health Collective, a nurse-led monthly educational community for women who want ongoing access to trustworthy integrative and functional health education, different practitioner perspectives, meaningful conversations, and connection with others who are interested in taking a more thoughtful approach to their health.

I was excited to sit down with Bev for one of the Collective’s Practitioner Deep Dives, where we talked about Mental Health and Nutrition.

We dove into:
◽Gut-Brain Axis
◽Nutrients for Brain Health
◽Fish Oil and Mental Health
◽Fiber and its role in the body
◽& Much More!

Our conversation will be available to Collective members in the on-demand learning library, along with live virtual conversations, additional Practitioner Deep Dives, curated resources, and special savings on in-person educational events and wellness experiences.

✨The Collective is now open, and women who join by tomorrow with receive a Founding Member Launch Bundle, which is chalk-full of all sorts of goods-including resources, offers, and gifts from integrative health practitioners and wellness businesses.

🔖Founding Member pricing is $49/month through October 4. Beginning October 5, membership will be $69/month.

I highly recommend you take a peek. 👀 Bev is truly creating something special here and I am so grateful to be part of it!

Zinc supports your gut…but more isn’t always better.

Zinc plays an important role in maintaining the intestinal lining and supporting the gut barrier.

But, it also plays a role in brain health.

And this is where the gut-brain connection gets especially interesting.

Persistent diarrhea can increase zinc losses, potentially contributing to zinc deficiency. At the same time, zinc deficiency may affect intestinal barrier function, which can cause leaky gut, and contribute to brain inflammation.

But, chronically taking high doses of zinc can interfere with copper status.

Copper is important for enzymes involved in neurotransmitter metabolism, including the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine.

So when we’re talking about nutrients (and supplements), more isn’t always better.

⚖️Balance matters…and so does a personalized approach.

We often think about the gut as the place where digestion happens.

But your gut is also constantly communicating with your brain.

Your microbiome produces metabolites and interacts with immune, hormonal, and nervous system pathways that can influence how the brain responds to its environment.

Which means your gut may be sending your brain information that helps shape things like stress response, mood, and nervous system function.

And this is one reason I find the gut-brain connection so fascinating.

Supporting mental wellness isn’t always about looking at the brain in isolation.

Sometimes, we need to look downstream at the gut, too.

Because the question isn’t just “What’s going on in the brain?”

It can also be:

“What signals is the gut sending?”

Save this if you want to learn more about the gut-brain connection. 🧠✨

Health plans shouldn’t be one size fits all…

What works well for one person might be completely unrealistic, counterproductive (or even unsafe) for someone else…

Your nutrition, routines, movement, sleep, supplements and wellness habits should fit your body, your brain, your preferences, and your day-to-day life.

What is one habit, supplement or routine you couldn’t live without?

Did you know passionflower and benzodiazepines work on the same calming system in the brain?

Both can influence GABA signaling, which is essentially the brakes for your brain.

And there’s some interesting research behind this…

Researchers randomly assigned 36 people with generalized anxiety disorder to receive either passionflower extract or oxazepam, a benzodiazepine, for 4 weeks.

Both groups experienced improvements in anxiety symptoms, and at the end of the study, there was no significant difference between the groups.

Pretty interesting, right? 👀

Did you know zinc is one mineral that tends to be insufficient in people with ADHD?

Zinc plays an important role in brain health and neurotransmitter function, including dopamine signaling—which is one reason it has gotten attention in ADHD research.

But here’s where it gets interesting…

More zinc isn’t necessarily better.

Over time, high-dose zinc supplementation can interfere with copper levels, and copper is also needed for your neurotransmitters.

🎯The goal is to look at the bigger picture and determine what your body actually needs because even essential nutrients can cause problems when the balance is off.

✨And that’s exactly why individualized nutrition support matters.
