What do you know about sex? If you're like most people, you got information (both truth and myths) from embarrassed parents, confused friends, "too little too late" high school sex ed classes, romantic movies, and perhaps your own experimentation. Choosing to educate yourself will help reduce the risk of potentially negative outcomes, such as unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This education can also help you enhance the quality of your relationships and to develop decision-making skills that will prove invaluable over your life. Join the NJWC during our monthly education table. We will discuss topics such as consent, STI’s, rape culture, hook-up culture, healthy relationships and more.

This is a place where people feel safe and comfortable discussing their issues around sexuality freely and openly. The NJWC wants to normalise sexuality, pleasure, and communication around sex. You bring your lunch and we’ll provide a delicious homemade dessert, all individually wrapped for safe consumption. Join the [Not Just] Women’s Center in talking about a difficult but important topic.

Stop by the table in Brandt Student Center to make your own flag and to learn how to say something when you see a red flag for dating violence in a friend’s relationship.

Did you know 1 in 5 college students experience dating violence? The Red Flag Campaign uses a bystander intervention strategy to address and prevent sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking on college campuses. The campaign encourages friends and other campus community members to say something when they see warning signs ("red flags") for sexual assault, dating violence, or stalking in a friend’s relationship.

Stand up and speak out! Do you believe that ALL people should be free from the threat of sexual violence. Do you believe women’s rights are human rights? Do you believe that our vote is our voice?
Then join the [Not Just] Women’s Center and the SU chapter of the American Association of University Women in rising up and speaking out. This year marks the 100th anniversary of United States women winning the right to vote. Please wear white, if possible, to honor the courageous suffragists who never gave up the fight for equality. We will gather on the lawn of Goodson Chapel and Recital Hall for a tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, march across campus, and end with a candlelight vigil. Green passes and masks are required for this event and please make sure that you practice social distancing. This event will happen rain or shine. All are welcome at this free event. For more information, please contact Sarah Celec at [email protected].

Tomorrow (Thurs. Sept. 24th)The NJWC is hosting a movie night!

I Am Evidence, narrated by Mariska Hargitay, tells the story of four survivors whose rape kits went untested for years, following them as they navigate their way through the criminal justice system and learn that so often, the system is broken. The film reveals the historic nature of the way we treat the crime of sexual assault in this country, and the positive effects that occur when perpetrators are held accountable and survivors are given an opportunity for healing and justice. I AM EVIDENCE has won the audience award for Best Documentary Film at both the Provincetown and Traverse City Film Festivals. Join us for a talkback session following our screening.

We will meet at the [Not Just] Women’s Center and then find a place to have a socially distanced lunch and conversation. Let’s talk about sex, because it turns out the most important part of cultivating a healthy sex life and healthy sexuality is by talking about it. This is a place where people feel safe and comfortable discussing their issues around sexuality freely and openly. The NJWC wants to normalise sexuality, pleasure, and communication around sex. You bring your lunch and we’ll provide a delicious homemade dessert, all individually wrapped for safe consumption.

The effects of sexual assault will not be the same for all survivors, it can be psychological, emotional, and physical. There is no wrong or right emotions, behavior, responses as the body and mind process the trauma. It is important to identify and normalize these reactions to better understand and help a survivor.
