๐ Puffballs: the marshmallows of the forest floor ๐
These round little guys pop up in lawns, fields, and forest edges from late summer into fall. No gills, no cap, just a ball full of spores. A single giant puffball (Calvatia gigantea) can hold TRILLIONS of them, and when they mature, raindrops or a passing foot send them out in a smoky โpuffโ ๐จ
โจ What to look for before you even think about eating one:
๐ช Slice it top to bottom. Every single time. The inside should be pure white, solid, and uniform, like fresh mozzarella or tofu.
โ ๏ธ See an outline of a cap, stem, or gills inside? STOP. Thatโs a baby Amanita in its egg stage, and some Amanitas are deadly.
๐ฃ Dark, purplish-black, or marbled inside with a tough, thick rind? Thatโs likely an earthball (Scleroderma). Toxic. Leave it.
๐ก Yellow, greenish, or brown inside means itโs past its prime. Not edible, but itโs doing its job spreading spores ๐ฑ
๐ค Pure white and firm = the good stuff. Slice it, pan-fry it in butter, and it eats like a savory French toast.
Rule of the woods: when in doubt, throw it out. Positive ID first, ALWAYS. Never eat a wild mushroom based on a video, including this one ๐๐พ
