During Florence Nightingale's first winter at Scutari, 4,077 soldiers died. Ten times more soldiers died from illnesses such as typhus, typhoid, cholera, and dysentary than from battle wounds. Nightingale set about improving supplies and conditions. It was through this and her nightly rounds that earned her the name "The Lady With the Lamp".
