While popcorn has long been considered by many to be a healthy snack - as long as it’s not loaded with butter and salt - corn production has been subsidized by the government since the 1970s.
I’m all for helping to support our #farmers any way that we can! But when 🌽 was first overproduced, we got innovative and made it into many new products - with many of those new products being “food”.
High fructose corn syrup (aka HFCS) is one such example.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, “HFCS increases your appetite and it promotes obesity more than regular sugar”.
“It also contributes to diabetes, inflammation, high triglycerides and something we now call non-alcoholic fatty liver disease”, according to Dr Hyman.
This is a something that is not only sold as a product itself in just about every grocery store, but it is also sold to food manufacturers as an ingredient to use in their packaged products!
Look on most packaged food labels and there is a good chance you will find HFCS listed as an ingredient.
How can we help the farmers farm different crops and produce more health-promoting #plants for us instead of more of what is making us sicker Americans?
But even if these harmful ingredients won’t go away, you still have FREE WILL.
At any time you can #choose to eat foods that support your #health and well-being instead of foods that do damage! 🎉

I started this tradition with my kids a few years ago - we write things that we are grateful for in a sharpie marker all around a pumpkin. We try to add one new item each day leading up to Thanksgiving. Then, we use this as part of our centerpiece on the table (or if the pumpkin is too big for the table, we would leave it at the front door to welcome everyone when they arrive.)
Practicing gratitude and thankfulness helps us keep things in perspective and focused on what matters most to us.❤️

I can’t remember where I first saw this picture but at the time it really struck me and so I saved it. Today I came across it again while looking for something else and it gave me pause as I thought of all of the people who are struggling with #mentalhealth and how rates of #suicide have increased over the past 6 months. 😔
There is so much turmoil in the world lately and for some, it seems too much of a burden to bear. People are struggling with how to cope with illnesses, loss of friends or loved ones, loss of a job, social injustice, or major shifts in routine. 😷
I think about how much extra stress everyone is experiencing lately. 🥺
I remember how many times I’ve heard people tell me that they have gained unwanted weight, find themselves stress eating, or how tired they are from lack of adequate sleep. 😔
Then I think about what can be done to help reverse this and bring more ☮️ to all.
I’m reminded how a deficiency (or even an insufficiency) of vitamins such as.....
Omega-3 fatty acids
and Vitamin D
can be linked to depression, fatigue and a host of other health problems.
Poor diet + Chronic stress = increased likelihood to have some sort of nutritional deficiency or insufficiency - because even if you think you are getting enough good nutrition, you may be having problems absorbing those nutrients adequately to meet your body’s needs. 💡

In September 2019, I had the pleasure of beginning a Teacher Training program at #osheayoga to become certified in Kundalini Yoga. Never would I have imagined that we would be finishing this program online due to a worldwide pandemic!
Despite these challenges, the program ran smoothly and after 10 months of intensive training, I am proud to say that I am now fully Certified to teach Kundalini Yoga classes.
Functional nutrition is all about getting to the root cause of imbalance in order to promote optimal health in the body. However, I feel I’ve always innately known that optimal health is about more than just what we eat.

Harvest overload from your garden? I had an explosion of zucchini. Can’t let those gems go to waste! Freeze what you can’t use now so you can enjoy it later. Some are sliced to make an easy veggie bake later. Some are shredded to use later in zucchini bread or other recipes.

Cauliflower offers such great health benefits! But how can we keep it from turning brown so quickly? Here are a few tips to help keep your cauliflower lasting longer:
👉🏻 Unwrap whole cauliflower as soon as you get home from the store and transfer it to a loosely sealed plastic bag with a paper towel tucked in It to absorb any extra moisture. This is usually good for a week or a little longer in a well-regulated fridge.
👉🏽 It’s best to store it in its whole form until ready to use. It can be precut and stored in the fridge as well but it is best to use it within 4 to 7 days.
👉 Don’t wash it until right before you are ready to use it. The moisture can cause it to brown quicker.
👉🏿 While it can be stored at room temperature for about 2 to 4 days, it’s best kept in the fridge.
👉🏼 While a few brown spots, if caught early, can be cut off and the remaining cauliflower still used, you’ll know it’s gone bad if the brown spots have taken over and spread all over the cauliflower head.
👉🏻 You can always freeze your cauliflower to use at a later time. While you can freeze it raw, blanching it before freezing in hot water will help to preserve the nutrients. Also, recommend cutting it up into pieces before freezing - easier to store this way because it takes up less space in your freezer and then is easier to use when you take it out later if it’s pre-cut.
Q: What about if it already started to get a few small brown spots on it, can you still eat it?
A: Yes! They are harmless and you can still cook with it too, as long as the spots do not have a dark color or have turned mushy or of course, moldy.

PRO TIP: Cut up some cauliflower and store it in a plastic bag until ready to use. Then there is less mess which means less clean-up when you mix this all together in the bag you are storing it in!
