Natural Hygiene, the original name of the National Health Association, has a long and impressive history. Much of the health and nutrition advise being touted today as “new” and revolutionary—such as the advantages of a plant-based diet, the incredible healing powers of the body, the role of fasting in the recovery of health, and the importance of avoiding unnecessary drugs and surgery—were promoted by Natural Hygienists as far back as 150 years ago.

Supporting kidney health starts with what we put on our plates.

In this episode of the NHA Today podcast, Dr. Stephan Esser explores the link between nutrition and kidney health, including how plant-based eating may help address key risk factors such as high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, and excess weight.

He also encourages us to think beyond simply avoiding unhealthy foods and focus on maximizing the nutritional value of what we eat.

Adding more berries, leafy greens, fresh herbs, beets, and other colorful vegetables can provide a variety of fiber, micronutrients, and beneficial plant compounds.

It's a helpful reminder that even small improvements to an already healthy diet can be worthwhile.

"Tell me what you eat for your health."

When Dr. Columbus Batiste meets with patients, he doesn't start by telling them what they should or shouldn't eat. Instead, he asks one simple question that reveals far more than a food diary ever could.

By listening first and understanding the beliefs behind a person's choices, he creates conversations that lead to lasting change rather than short-term compliance.

It's a powerful reminder that meaningful health transformation often begins with curiosity, not criticism.

“We keep searching outside for what we already have the tools to resolve inside.” — Dra. Joanna Frey

With new diets, supplements, biohacks, and health trends constantly competing for our attention, it's easy to overlook the fundamentals.

In this episode of the NHA Today podcast, Dra. Joanna Frey and Dr. Asa Frey explore a different approach—one centered around presence, nourishing food, movement, nature, sunlight, sleep, and healthy relationships.

Rather than continually searching for the next solution, their message encourages us to reconnect with the basic practices that support our well-being day after day.

Fear of getting hurt can sometimes keep us from moving at all.

On this episode of the NHA Today podcast, physical therapist Jen Dieter discusses what she calls “fear avoidance”—when uncertainty about pain or injury makes someone hesitant to bend, lift, exercise, or return to everyday movements.

Her approach helps people gradually rebuild confidence in what their bodies can do, with appropriate guidance and support.

The goal isn’t only to move better today. As Jen says, it’s about being able to “train for 30 years from now.”

We can know what to eat, understand the importance of movement, and still struggle to keep healthy habits.

Dra. Joanna Frey believes there’s another piece of the equation: presence.

On this episode of the NHA Today podcast, she explains that practicing presence can help us recognize our habits and automatic behaviors more clearly. Instead of reacting from old patterns, we can notice them—and choose differently.

For Dra. Joanna, that’s why presence comes first. It creates the awareness from which the other pillars of healthy living can grow.

Healthy aging involves more than nutrition and exercise.

In this episode of the NHA Today podcast, Dr. Charlyn Black discusses the six pillars of lifestyle medicine: nutrition, movement, sleep, social connection, avoiding risky substances, and stress management.

We may each struggle in different areas, but these pillars offer a helpful framework for viewing our health as a whole—and identifying where we can make meaningful changes as we age.

“People can get old, and they don’t have to be focused on caregivers and medications and pain and bedpans. They can actually be healthy towards the end of their lives.” — Vesanto Melina

At 84, registered dietitian Vesanto Melina isn’t just studying healthy aging—she’s living it.

In this episode of the NHA Today podcast, Vesanto joins Dr. Stephan Esser to discuss how nutrition, movement, strong bones, community, and other healthy habits can help support vitality and independence throughout our later years.

Her message is encouraging: getting older doesn’t mean we have to stop pursuing better health.

Just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s normal.

Urinary leakage with laughing, coughing, sneezing, or exercise is common among women of many ages. But in this episode of the NHA Today podcast, pelvic floor physical therapist Laura Bunso explains why it shouldn’t automatically be accepted as an inevitable part of aging or womanhood.

For many otherwise healthy women, pelvic floor physical therapy can help address the underlying issue and improve bladder control.

Knowing that help is available can be an important first step toward doing something about it.
