Medication isn’t always one-size-fits-all, especially for children.
A child may need a strength that isn’t commercially available, have difficulty swallowing a tablet, dislike a medication’s taste, or be sensitive to ingredients such as dyes, preservatives, lactose, or gluten.
A compounding pharmacist can work with the child’s healthcare provider to:
• Prepare a patient-specific dose based on the child’s clinical needs
• Create an easier-to-take liquid or chewable form when appropriate
• Add a more acceptable flavor to help make medication time less stressful
• Leave out certain inactive ingredients that may cause allergies or sensitivities
• Provide an alternative when a needed pediatric formulation is unavailable
Not every medication can be compounded into every form, so close collaboration among the provider, pharmacist, and caregiver is essential.
