One of the most overlooked concepts of women’s health is blood sugar.🤯🍫

Dysregulated blood sugar is an extremely inflammatory process in the body, whether it be high or low. Our goal is to maintain a BALANCED blood sugar, one that is consistent & resilient to stress.

So how do we do this properly & consistently?

The first best way to optimize blood sugar functioning is to support the metabolism. Why? Because the metabolism is a chemical reaction that runs ALL processes in the body & is responsible for how the body uses energy.

There are various strategies to support metabolic & blood sugar functioning, but we have to keep in mind that nutrition isn’t everything.

STRESS & how we live our lives greatly influences blood sugar.

If we’re stressed & live a lifestyle that doesn’t promote homeostasis, our body burns through more nutrients faster, releases stress hormones & shunts blood flow from essential organs in order to survive. So when you’re thinking about healing from blood sugar dysregulation, think holistically & address all areas in life.

Nutritional supports:
Eat every 3-4 hours
Pair a protein & carb at every meal/snack
Consume more easily digestible foods: carbs & proteins
Aim for at least 30g of protein at each meal
Prioritize nutrient & mineral dense foods
Hydrate through ripe fruit consumption

External supports:
Get outside for at least 15+ minutes daily
Prioritize 7-9 hours of sleep nightly
Go for a brief walk after meals
Sit down while you eat
Learn how to perform diaphragmatic breathing at least 5x each day

How do you support your blood sugar?

But Cara, my MD wants to put me on statins?...

What people don’t realize is that cholesterol isn’t the issue. It’s other factors in your life that are the problem.
👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼
Stress
Vitamin/mineral deficiencies
Low thyroid functioning
Poor liver health
Poor digestion
Inflammation
Blood sugar dysregulation
Excessive vegetable/hydrogenated oil intake
Adrenal dysfunction
Sedentary lifestyle
Hormonal imbalances

All of these contribute as being the root causes of why cholesterol might be high in the first place. But let’s just take a step back for a hot second…is cholesterol actually bad?

MDs are so quick to push statins for “high cholesterol.” But what they fail to do is look at the root cause of high cholesterol in the first place. Cholesterol is actually needed for various bodily functions digestion, bile production, hormone production and even maintains cell wall integrity. Sorry but not worry, docs, but we NEED it.

Cholesterol also…

🍍Provides stability to all cell by creating cell membranes and reducing permeability
🍍Is a precursor to s*x hormones in the body
🍍Protects our nerves
🍍Helps to produce vitamin (hormone) D
🍍Helps to produce bile acids in the gallbladder
🍍Helps to repair arterial walls

This is why it is crucial to support ALL body systems, macros/minerals in order to maintain healthy cholesterol levels in the body BEFORE even thinking about taking statins. Why? Because if one system is under supported, cholesterol will not work or be utilized as properly as it should; therefore, creating higher HDL and lowering LDL in the bloodstream.

Start attacking the issues at a root cause and avoid putting your body at risk for worse issues down the road. Comment STATIN below for a free assessment!

Y’all know what I’m going to say...😂👇🏼

The number one reason why women can’t lose weight, despite doing ALL of the right things and eating all of the right foods is because of nervous system dysregulation/STRESS.

When the body is under stress (aka doesn’t have what it needs to function or isn’t being supported in the right ways), it SLOWS DOWN. It HIBERNATES. And it buckles down for winter where food is scarce. This ultimately means a sluggish metabolism, slower thyroid & liver functioning, heightened stress hormone production, a whacked out blood sugar, burnt-out adrenals, poor digestion, a mentally burned out brain.

And unfortunately, when the body is undergoing this kind of stress or nervous system dysregulation, it doesn’t prioritize letting go. In fact, it’s trying to survive. This is why most women are experiencing weight gain despite doing everything right: they’re still living the most demanding, stressful, do everything, go everywhere, endless to-do list life.

And honestly, it’s burning them out and creating a whole lot of internal imbalances.

What we don’t like to hear is to SLOW DOWN. Supporting our stress and nervous system ultimately supports the body’s ability to release, feel safe again and lose the extra pounds that just won’t budge.

Start by...👇🏼

- Setting clear boundaries with yourself and others (it’s okay to say no!)
- Doing things you love again
- Being okay with not getting everything done that day
- Prioritizing nutrition the right way (let’s chat!)
- Getting ample amounts of sleep
- Resting and being okay with doing it (your body knows when it’s being forced)
- Meditation and journaling
- Getting outside in the morning sunlight
- Having FUN and smiling for yourself again

Feel me? What would you add to these lists?👇🏼😬

Having healthy hormones means everything for a woman’s body. How do I know? Because I’ve been postpartum TWICE (still living it over here!) and could/can feel every single bit of hormonal “off-balance”.

Having healthy hormones also means supporting each health foundation like stress, blood sugar, digestion, nutrient density, and sleep. Optimize THESE foundations and support your body with the RIGHT kind of body + soul + nourishment and it will respond positively to you and what you want + need it to do.

Diet culture has really done some damage in the past decades, am I right? 😬

What we were TOLD was “healthy” doesn’t quite seem to match up to health. This is where focusing on health foundations can really impact and make the biggest difference towards one’s health. These might include:

Blood sugar
Sleep
Stress
Digestion
Nutrient density

Focusing on these supporting foundations and letting go of what society tells us will literally PAVE your way towards optimal health, I promise.

Progesterone is one of the key hormone players in the body. It’s responsible for supporting a thriving immune system, lowering stress, optimizing thyroid/liver functioning, lowering stress and anxiety, supporting brain and executive functioning, and supporting fertility.😍

Without it, all things go absolutely SOUTH when it comes to hormonal balance.

However, low progesterone is something I see in (almost) every one of my female clients. This is often due to various factors like…

Stress
Environmental toxins
Lack of targeted nutrient density
Mineral deficiencies
Heavy metal or mold exposures
Poor gut health
Estrogen dominance
Poor blood sugar regulation

One of the key nutrients that I like to use to support my progesterone is AMPLE vitamin C intake! A woman’s body literally NEEDS enough vitamin c from the right sources to support optimal progesterone levels. In fact, just supplementing with 750 mg has been shown to support an increase of progesterone in women up to 77%!

Not only does progesterone act as an antioxidant, but it also acts as an anti-inflammatory for the body, lowering stress hormone production and enhancing the update of progesterone on progesterone receptors.

Choose the RIGHT vitamin c by opting for more whole food sources and NOT the ascorbic acid.

Do you struggle with thyroid issues? 😬🦋

Here are six things I bet your MD didn’t tell you that influence optimal thyroid functioning…

Nutritional deficiencies: the thyroid requires very specific nutrients from the right sources in order to function properly. These include copper, retinol, zinc, iodine selenium and potassium. Don’t know if you’re low or deficient? This is why we almost always run an HTMA in our practice to identify any underlying deficiency issues. Comment DEFICIENT below to learn more!
Chronic stress: any kind of stress will lead to mineral deficiencies, especially magnesium. It also contributes to hormonal imbalances by disrupting the balance between estrogen to progesterone by pushing cortisol throughout the body. This disrupts liver functioning, which hinders it’s ability to properly convert thyroid hormone well.
Circadian rhythm: the body NEEDS the right type of sunlight to make thyroid hormone. When we are constantly getting blue light or not getting enough natural light at very specific times of the day, our thyroid can’t produce thyroid hormone efficiently.
Gut infections: having healthy microbiota is key for having a healthy thyroid. This is because the bacteria in our gut are directly related to the conversion of thyroid hormones. Likewise, having issues like leaky gut also increases the likelihood of getting an autoimmune thyroid disease like Hachimotos.
HPA axis dysfunction: when the body runs on stress hormones (cortisol), it is constantly releasing inflammatory proteins. This downregulates thyroid functioning, which lowers thyroid hormone production and conversion in the liver.
Heavy metals: specific metals are responsible for negatively impacting thyroid functioning by displacing nutrients and behaving as endocrine disruptors. This negatively impacts thyroid functioning by lowering production, conversion and uptake of thyroid hormone. This is one of the reasons why we always run an HTMA on clients with thyroid issues!
