Cure GBM CureGBM is building the European pathway for sonodynamic therapy, a breakthrough treatment for glioblastoma.

Right now, there’s a family somewhere in Europe about to hear the words “you have a brain tumour.”

We know how they feel. We know what’s ahead of them. And we know the standard of care isn’t nearly good enough right now.

They are who CureGBM was founded for. It’s too late for our dad. Soon, it mightn’t be for someone else’s.

You might be surprised to learn that brain tumours are now the leading cause of cancer death in children.

Brain tumours haven’t become more dangerous. It's that survival rates for other childhood cancers, especially leukaemia, have improved so dramatically that brain tumours were simply left behind. Research funding and innovation went where the breakthroughs were happening, and brain cancer wasn't one of them.

That gap is still here today. Brain Tumour Research is campaigning to raise national investment in brain tumour research to at least £45 million a year, because right now, funding hasn't come close to catching up.

We hope that Sonodynamic Therapy - or other gentle, non-invasive therapies like it - could one day offer new options for children facing brain cancers like DIPG. Every step forward matters, whatever form it takes.

If you can, this Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, support the charities and organisations leading the fight against paediatric brain cancer.

Finally a positive breakthrough in the world of brain cancer treatment - the NHS has launched a world-first pilot of a rapid test that can diagnose the exact type of brain tumour in hours rather than weeks, in some cases even returning results while the patient is still in surgery.

The technology works by quickly analysing the genetic code of a sample of the tumour and confirming which of the following ~150 different types of brain tumour - each of which respond to and require different treatment - is present in the patient.

One of the hardest parts of the brain tumour patient journey is the on-average 7 to 10 day wait for these results after the tumour is discovered and the first surgery is carried out. Most patients are discharged within a day or two, and then spend that waiting period at home, anxious and isolated, before learning whether their tumour is benign or malignant. Beyond the emotional toll this takes, that delay can also push back the start of critical chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.

That’s why we’re delighted to see this kind of innovation reaching NHS patients, and hope to see it scale quickly beyond the pilot and across the UK and beyond. We know from our experience with our Dad, and from speaking with other brain cancer patients and their families, just how difficult and draining the diagnostic waiting period is, so we’re sure this new test will have a huge positive impact on the thousands of brits diagnosed with brain tumours each year.

Hopefully this marks the start of a new wave of innovation in neuro-oncology - one we aim to be part of too.

This week, we lost Kim Borthwick, inmyheadkim, a courageous voice in the glioblastoma community.

Although we did not know Kim personally, we are deeply grateful for her support and for the tireless work she did to raise awareness of brain cancer following her diagnosis in January this year.

Kim used her own experience to speak openly about glioblastoma and the devastating impact it has on patients and their families. Her determination to raise awareness, even while facing her own illness, was truly remarkable.

Our heartfelt thoughts are with Kim’s husband, her four-year-old twin boys, her family, friends and everyone who loved her. We are thinking of you all and sending our deepest condolences and strength at this incredibly difficult time.

Thank you, Kim, for using your voice and for everything you did to raise awareness of this devastating disease. Your efforts mattered, and you will be remembered. ❤️

Earlier this year, CureGBM founder Richard Wakefield sat down with GlobalData Healthcare to talk about the potential Sonodynamic Therapy (SDT) has for treating Glioblastoma (GBM)

The podcast episode featuring Richard's interview is now live. If you'd like to get a complete overview of the current state of GBM treatment, how SDT works, and our plans for the future, listen to learn all of that in under 11 minutes - pop it on in your next tea break!

Why is brain cancer so difficult to treat?

Our bodies have amazing natural defence systems, but unfortunately they can work against us when it comes to tumours.

The "Blood-Brain Barrier" blocks up to 98% of standard cancer drugs from ever even entering the brain, which is part of the reason brain cancer is so difficult to combat.

For years, this has meant one thing for glioblastoma patients: typical cancer treatments just can’t do their job.

Sonodynamic Therapy (SDT) gets around it in a completely different way. Patients drink a compound called 5-ALA that CAN cross into the brain and gathers in tumour cells. Then, focused sound waves — safely passed through the skull — switch it on, destroying the cancer from the inside while leaving healthy brain tissue untouched.

In early US trials, this doubled median survival for people with recurrent glioblastoma, with no known side effects.

We think that's worth fighting for. We're working to bring SDT to Europe, starting with a safety trial planned for late 2026.

We can't do this without support. Share this post, and help us find our way in

Surviving longer with cancer shouldn't mean suffering to do so.

When someone is diagnosed with glioblastoma, every extra day with family matters immensely.

But right now, getting that extra time usually comes at a heavy cost: invasive brain surgeries, harsh side effects, and months spent feeling terribly unwell.

Nobody should have to choose between adding time to their life and actually being able to enjoy that time.

That’s why we’re so passionate about Sonodynamic Therapy (SDT). It uses gentle sound waves to target and destroy cancer cells from the inside out, leaving healthy brain tissue alone. No scalpels, no exhausting recovery, just cutting-edge new technology designed to be kinder on the body.

We're pushing hard to get this into European clinical trials by the end of the year, so families have a gentler, more hopeful option.

Give this a share to help us get the word out, and drop a 💛 in the comments if you agree that new cancer treatments need funding and researching!

The “standard of care” for Glioblastoma patients is outdated, exhausting and all to often, ineffective.

Surgery is challenging and invasive, and chemo- and radio-therapies hurt healthy cells alongside the cancer they target

But for twenty years, there has been precious little advancement in the treatment of one of the deadliest cancers for under 40s.

That’s why we’re so determined to bring an innovative new treatment called SonoDynamic Therapy to Europe. It works by combining the 5-ALA drug with focussed ultrasound to target and kill the tumour cells and leave healthy tissue untouched.

Because it is targeted and non-invasive, this gentler, repeatable therapy could be the new third pillar of brain cancer treatment that Glioblastoma patients deserve.

We’re actively looking for strategic partners to help us find the phase 1 European safety trial this year, with the ultimate aim of rolling out SDT across Europe and beyond by the end of the decade.

Help us spread the word and make a new, better, more hopeful standard of care the reality for the 20,000 Europeans per year diagnosed with Glioblastoma.

It’s the deadliest cancer for people under 40, but brain tumours receive less than 3% of national cancer research funding across Europe.

The standard of care for Glioblastoma (GBM) hasn’t meaningfully changed in over 20 years. For the 20,000 newly diagnosed GBM patients each year, this means limited options and little hope. We are working to change this narrative.

At CureGBM, our mission is to bypass decades of stagnation by bringing a new, innovative treatment called Sonodynamic Therapy (SDT) directly to European clinical trials in late 2026.

Help us bring visibility to a forgotten cause, and find the investment we need to make a potential new treatment possible. Share this post to raise awareness and support brain cancer innovation.

Our founders, siblings Richard Wakefield and Jane Oberholzer, aren’t going to benefit personally from bringing a new standard of brain cancer care to Europe - it’s too late for their dad to benefit - but they’re still determined to find a new treatment solution for future Glioblastoma patients.
