My son`s health story highlights a tightrope balance between traditional & integrative approaches of care. He came into the world via cesarean birth and at about 6 months old we recognized he had severe food allergies. After the allergist skin prick test/blood work, it was confirmed allergies to milk, egg, peanut and some environmental elements. Often food allergies come along with eczema and asthma, which we also combated often.

We have seen many traditional doctors who`s prescription is avoidance of the allergens and medicines for symptoms. Our family had to get very creative when preparing safe meals with alternative ingredients. We got very familiar with the latest vegan (non dairy, egg) products in the grocery store and knowing how to eat out in restaurants without the end result of cross contamination leading to hives, allergic reaction, etc. (This happened often and we usually did not go out without medicines or an epi-pen.) Sending him to school was a whole other adventure, as even though we provided a packed lunch from home, he was so young and there were often outside snacks for the class, etc.

When he was a baby, the very first allergist we saw said that the majority of children with food allergies might grow out of them by the age of eight if they were ever going to. The eighth birthday came and went...then a couple of years later, we found an integrative doctor in our state that offered a more holistic approach to health. We left the visit with a ton of supplements and paperwork discussing leaky gut, inflammation among the things we were already doing for purification of environment, etc.

Then the next year something amazing happened…he could eat a piece of cake without breaking out…then we slowly started introducing other items that he had never been able to have into his diet…no symptoms. Egg dish for breakfast. Good. Accidentally ate a bite of cookie that was made with peanuts…no wheezing…something was going on.

Putting together all of the pieces together… I went back to school to be a health coach at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and kept hearing references to the fact that babies born from cesarean births are lacking in the diverse microbiome of a traditional birth. There has also been a direct relationship between gut health and so many illnesses, including that of food sensitivities, etc.

So, a traditional doctor would tell you that there is no cure for allergies, asthma, etc…and it could have been my son just “grew out” of some of his food sensitivities. Whatever it was I am very thankful and continue to take advice from his traditional doctor and follow the action plan of his integrative practitioner to heal his gut to heal his body.

Recently learned the term in one of my courses at and am currently reading the book by 🍂

Often sensitivities are framed as something weak or a problem that needs fixing to fit in with social norms, etc. Being able to retell that story as something positive and intuitive is very powerful.
Mental health is just as important as physical health. 👈

Health Coach?...

My journey into health, really began when I was in my early 20`s pregnant with my son. Wanting to do everything right, I poured ferociously into all the books regarding organics, natural home keeping, and tried to provide him a clean little bubble to thrive.

At the time, I was defiantly the lil black sheep, gathering my tribe of organic farmer friends and seeking out any yoga class, herb store around my suburban area.

There was no such thing as a health coach or at least not one that I had heard of. Sure, there were personal trainers at my gym, but not a kindred type soul that understood that health is more about working out, dieting, etc. So what is health then, if not this?

Whole body, integrative health is as much about how your spirituality, career, relationships, etc. nourish your life, as having the foundation of good dietary nutrition. It is often an imbalance in some of these areas that keep people from stopping preventable risk factors that eventually lead to illness….and in America, we are in desperate times when it comes to health.

More that 65% of Americans are overweight, and it is estimated that half of all Americans have a chronic disease.

Our current healthcare model focuses on managing our sick care, but seriously lacks in prevention. In the case of someone who has been given the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, the doctor might suggest switching to a plant based diet. For most people I know, this type of radical diet change would be impossible for their lifestyle without support.

This would be when a health coach could become a partner to work alongside health professionals recommendations. Or knowing that a lifestyle change is needed in your life to to keep you your healthiest, happiest, self.

My goal as a health coach is to give people the support to develop a plan to help target their goals and connect with their inner wisdom to transform their lives.

Hello you! I am so excited for the first post on my page to coincide with the start of this New Year!

For me, New Years day has been a day of looking to the year ahead. I always get a beautiful wall calendar that our family will use thru-out the year and use my time filling it with the events, school breaks, etc. I also enjoy getting a little insight by taking a peek at my monthly horoscopes and overall theme for the year...you would be surprised how accurate those often are. (Let me tell you, they nailed 2020.) Our family also has a tradition of eating a wholesome meal together on the 1st and in the south, that usually means "Beans & Greens" for luck and money to bring us prosperity for the year.

A lot of people have similar rituals for the New Year and the best intended resolutions are often made on this day. Since 2021 is a powerful year, how to we make sure that we are putting forth our our best laid goals and giving ourselves the chance of achieving them?

American psychologist Edwin Locke`s research for his commonly accepted goal-setting theory shows that more specific and ambitious goals often lead to more performance improvement that easier, vague goals.

So setting an intention and finding purpose for these goals is often one of the keys to obtaining them.

Why do I want to lose that weight? Why is going back to school important? What will my life look like if make more quality time with friends & family?...

Getting clear on what is important and why, helps to prioritize goals to contend with all of the other current responsibilities in your life. Next comes the action...break down goals into bite size, attainable pieces. What day can I fit this activity into my life? How often a week/month will I need to see measurable results?

Also, sharing your plans for improvement with friends and family can help hold you accountable and find the support you need. (Especially when unforeseen obstacles get in the way.) There are also coaches like myself that nothing would make happier that helping you to live out your purpose and to achieve your goals for a happy, healthy life.

Here`s to a wonderful year of positive change and prosperity! Your vision for the most wonderful YOU is within reach!!

"Be the change you would like to see in the world."
One way that I try to embody this statement, is by cultivating nature within my property. In our little homestead in the suburbs, we have created a sustainable food forest oasis filled with edible fruits, vegetables and herbs. Loosely following the principles of permaculture: (the development of agriculture ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self sufficient) our yard is alive with a bio diverse ecosystem that supplies us with well-being, grounding and a constant connection with nature.
During the recession, I had lost my job and had a infant son. By finding a local farm that would trade work for a share of their organic community supported agriculture (CSA) fruit and vegetable box. I was not only able to provide fresh, organic baby food for my child, but the joy that I found helping on that farm healed my soul.
We now re-create that joy into our landscape in our little corner of the world. When we moved to our house in 2010, we only had two oak trees, but now my yard is alive with:
strawberries, plums, goji berry, elderberry, kiwi, grapes, lemon, peach, fig, blackberry, blueberry, quince, gooseberries, banana trees
asparagus, arugula, sorrel, onions, avocado, rhubarb, seasonal vegetables, sunchokes, olive trees
lavender, sage, catnip, bee balm, oregano, tarragon, spearmint, thyme, lemon balm, yarrow, chamomile, chives, echinacea and rosemary
I would not consider myself a great gardener as i have mourned the loss of plants that i have spent cultivating and sometimes my trees never come to fruit. However, being able to walk outside each day, inspecting new blooms, finding plants that re-seeded themselves, witnessing all manner of wildlife and to be able to share our abundance with neighbors gives me no greater joy.
