Working on improving health (gut, brain, or otherwise) means more than just eating well.⁣

Yes, food is incredible maker or breaker of health. ⁣

I mean, let’s look at the Standard American Diet… and how it has contributed to the Standard American disease (including Alzheimer’s). ⁣

When I was young, I believed that my mother who ate organic food and loved to walk would never develop any sort of disease. However, she developed ovarian cancer and Alzheimer’s.⁣

I fully appreciate that she did the best that she could with what she knew. ⁣

But when I reflect on how she ate and lived, knowing what I know now, I can see the contributing factors to her getting sick:⁣
• she ate organic, but it included lots of carbs and packaged foods⁣
• she struggled with constipation⁣
• she had many a sleepless night⁣
• she walked her dog but did no other physical exercise…no cardio, no strength-training⁣
• she did nothing to challenge herself…in fact, she took early retirement and downsized everything⁣
• she did not like to play games or socialize⁣
• she did not try to learn new skills ⁣

AND⁣

• she endured decades of stress (working in job that she didn’t like…raising me, from infancy, as a single mom…financial stresses…familial stresses…then health stresses).⁣

Growing up, I never really thought about how my mother managed her stress, but here is how I feel she did it. ⁣

At the end of her day, she would have a drink…rye and ginger ale. She also sat in front of the TV, every night. That’s it. ⁣

These are probably the two most common coping mechanisms, and perhaps they work on some level, but they are not promoters of good health.⁣

We can do a lot to manage our stress and our response to it. And being mindful is a great one…it is free and we can take it and do it anywhere:⁣

…at bedtime⁣
…during mealtime⁣
…at the office⁣
…stuck in traffic⁣
…cleaning the house⁣
…⁣

Try it out and experience the wondrous benefits.⁣

Remember… the least stressful time and place is in the moment.⁣

If you can relate to any of these scenarios, keep reading…  ⁣

Imagine your world free of: ⁣
• Gas, bloating & constipation⁣
• Food intolerances⁣
• Unwanted weight⁣
• Sugar cravings⁣
• Crap energy⁣

Well… it can easily become a reality!⁣
If you are experiencing these symptoms or similar ones, you may have an overgrowth of candida and/or leaky gut. ⁣

Candida is a yeast that is a key part of our gut microbiome. BUT with today's poor diet, lifestyle & sleep, plus high stress, we have created the perfect environment for candida to thrive, leaving most of us with an overgrowth.⁣

Candida is often associated with vaginal yeast infections or oral thrush. BUT it very commonly shows up as: ⁣
• extreme fatigue⁣
• cravings for sugar, bread and alcohol⁣
• headaches⁣
• abdominal gas and bloating⁣
• brain fog⁣
• inability to concentrate ⁣

Candida produces toxic waste products that are absorbed into the bloodstream. Some of these toxins can affect hormone balance, liver function, and nervous system. There is even evidence that candida can invade brain tissue. ⁣

And if that’s not enough insult, candida in an overgrowth situation contributes to leaky gut as its roots extend and punch holes in the gut lining. ⁣

A leaky gut allows for improperly digested foods to pass through the gut lining. As soon as this happens, the immune system kicks in because it does not recognize them, resulting in a reaction (gas, bloating, skin rash, acne…).⁣

But we can easily do a gut reset and bring it back into balance, by stabilizing our gut microbiome and sealing up the leaks in the gut lining. ⁣

By this point you might be wondering what this has to do with brain health and Alzheimer’s. The short answer is…LOADS!⁣

The digestive and nervous systems are linked in many ways. To name just two⁣
1. poor gut health contributes to inflammation⁣
2. if you aren’t digesting properly then the nutrients in those brain foods that you are so diligently eating, aren’t doing a thing . ⁣

I can help you reset your gut and wouldn’t that feel great heading into the holiday season?! ⁣

But it also takes a few weeks and so you need to act quickly. Book a call with me and let’s get started!

Who are you thankful for? ⁣

Max is an incredible young man! I am SO EXTREMELY PROUD and HONOURED to be his mother. ⁣

He has so many interests (music, chemistry, physics, philosophy, video games, travel) and so so so many amazing qualities (intelligence, drive, kindness, compassion, strong will, empathy, sense of humour…).⁣

I am very excited to see what paths he chooses in life, personally and professionally. Some of his career field interests have been/are music composition, astrophysics, sustainable forestry and sustainable agriculture - but it honestly doesn’t matter what he chooses, he will ROCK whatever it is.⁣

Of course, NOT to wish any time away at all, and recognizing that living in the present is much healthier than living in the past or the future, we, mothers, think about these things 🥰.⁣

Nobody wants Alzheimer’s in their future …why would they? ... it is terrible for those suffering with it and it is absolutely devastating for their loved ones around them! ⁣

I watched my mother gradually forget who people were, and although I was the one she remembered the longest, eventually that recognition went, too (in mind but not in heart). ⁣

I cannot imagine not knowing who my own son is! It terrifies me! ⁣

And caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is draining – physically, mentally, emotionally, financially. I am certain that most of us would do anything in our power to avoid our children having to bear this burden.⁣

Maybe it sounds too good to be true, BUT WE ACTUALLY DO HAVE A REAL OPPORTUNITY to boost our cognition and lower our risk of developing Alzheimer’s through what we eat and how we live, regardless of any genetic predisposition! ⁣

Determining the best changes for you as an individual can be tricky because there is no one-size-fits-all thing to do but I can help figure out what will work best to boost your brain health AND improve the chances of your child saying, “Despite a strong family history of Alzheimer’s, my mother has a strong, healthy mind”.⁣

Oh, the POWER OF MUSHROOMS 🍄!⁣

These five mushrooms are just the tip of the iceberg, when it comes to supporting brain health and helping to lower Alzheimer’s risk.⁣

1. LION’S MANE directly benefits our brain health by improving mood; helping concentration, memory and cognitive function; and supporting nerve health. It holds neuroREgenerative properties, carrying much potential for brain health (Alzheimer’s and dementia) and in repairing myelin sheath around damaged nerves (Parkinson’s and neuropathy). ⁣

2. MAITAKE mushrooms are very high in antioxidants and beta-glucans and so aid in blood sugar balance and improve insulin sensitivity, as well as helping to balance the immune system, cholesterol levels and blood pressure. ⁣

3. CHAGA (a fungus that grows on birch trees) has a high antioxidant content, helping to reduce inflammation and regulate the immune system.⁣

4. REISHI – helps support sleep, lower stress, promote cardiovascular health and balance the immune system⁣

5. SHIITAKE – greatly supports and modulates the immune system⁣

If you would like to learn more about how to incorporate these extraordinary mushrooms into your life, tap the link in my profile to book a free call with me. 🍄 🧠💜

Big bowl of wellness, Anyone?⁣

Before reading any further, what ingredients can you identify?⁣

This amazingly delicious and healthful soup contains:⁣
• Bone broth – immune, digestive, skeletal and integumentary systems⁣
• Organic edamame – immune system, protein ⁣
• Shiitake mushrooms – immune system  ⁣
• Bok choy – immune system⁣
• Garlic – immune, cardiovascular systems⁣
• Ginger – immune, cardiovascular systems⁣

Now, you may be wondering why I have used a bunch of foods that are great for the immune system, with no mention of the brain or nervous system.⁣

Well, one of the keys to a healthy brain is a healthy immune system. Why is that?⁣

There is an important two-way interaction between the nervous and immune systems, whereby each informs the other and reacts based on cues and signals. This communication allows the immune system to engage the rest of the body to protect against infection from pathogenic microorganisms and to help lower inflammation, and allows the nervous system to regulate immune functioning.⁣

Another connection is that we have a built-in nightly brain-cleansing system called the glymphatic system, which is part of the immune system. The job of the glymphatic system is to scrub the brain of toxins, metabolic waste, and β-amyloid plaque that has accumulated during the day. This process occurs during certain parts of our sleep cycle and if it is unable to clear out these waste products, then inflammation prevails. (Good quality sleep is a BIG DEAL.)⁣

So a healthy immune system helps promote brain and whole body health.⁣

If you would like to learn more about how to support a healthy immune system, while simultaneously moving towards better brain health, I encourage you to tap the link in my profile and book a complimentary 30-min call.⁣

Confused about what to eat to boost brain health 🤔?⁣

There is mounting evidence that a whole food ketogenic way of eating with loads of alkalizing foods (non-starchy vegetables, certain fruits, fermented foods) coupled with intermittent fasting and a few other key lifestyle and mindset changes are important things that most people can start to do if they are interested in improving cognitive function. ⁣

I have put together a mini guide on this way of eating that is based off Apollo Health’s (Dr. Dale Bredesen’s) KetoFLEX 12/3 and the Brain Food Pyramid. This is a fantastic way to get a feel for this keto way of life. ⁣

About 10 years ago it hit me… Geez, I have a lot of Alzheimer’s in my blood line and I started thinking about exactly how many incidents of Alzheimer’s are in my family’s history (my grandfather, my aunt, my father, my mother). ⁣

Truth be known, I was afraid for myself. And having experienced firsthand what it is like to be a caregiver for someone with Alzheimer’s, I was afraid that my son and his future family would end up having to care for me and experience the associated grief and stress.⁣

I started to research Alzheimer’s and found so much evidence that its occurrence is related to far more than just genes! Its development is influenced MORE by food/nutrition and lifestyle choices. I then started to think about my lifelong interest in health and nutrition and how I could turn it into a profession so that I could raise awareness of these TRUTHS about Alzheimer’s and actually help people build their brain health and their confidence that they are ACTIVELY LOWERING their risk of developing it.⁣

This is what I am all about! Helping people take charge of their brain health so they can ditch their fear and grow their confidence, like I did mine.⁣

It can be tricky to do this on your own, but I can help figure out what will work best for you as an individual to improve digestion, get rid of brain fog, boost your cognitive function, and lower your risk of developing Alzheimer’s. ⁣

You have nothing to lose and so much to gain! ⁣

Cheers to resveratrol! ☺️🍷⁣

Resveratrol is a very remarkable plant nutrient! ⁣

It is an anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory. ⁣

It also protects against glycation, which is the reaction between excess blood sugar and blood proteins that yields sticky substances (called advanced glycation end-products (AGES)) that adhere to the inner surfaces of blood vessels, restricting blood flow to the brain. AGES may also cause nerve damage.⁣

Resveratrol is also NEUROPROTECTIVE, helps preserve the integrity of the blood-brain barrier and helps control neuro-inflammation.⁣

If you want to boost your intake of resveratrol, eat more foods that are rich in this amazing phytonutrient, including (but not limited to): grapes (particularly red grapes), red wine (consider a limited amount), blueberries, pistachios, cacao, and rhubarb.⁣

A great way to better ensure that the brain-supportive nutrients in these foods are being digested, absorbed and metabolized properly, is to work with me to improve digestive function and then focus on brain health.⁣

Gut first, then brain!⁣

Gut first, then brain! Keep reading 🤓🧠💜⁣

You may very well be eating all the right foods that you have learned are good for brain health. If so, great; you are on the right track 👊. But if you are still struggling with brain fog, poor focus, decision-making and memory, then there may be other reasons why, despite eating well, you still see little improvement. ⁣

For example, perhaps all those great brain-healthy nutrients are not actually being digested, absorbed or metabolized properly.⁣

Addressing GUT health FIRST, and THEN focusing on BRAIN health, is key.⁣

By bringing the gut back into balance, by stabilizing the gut microbiome, re-establishing the health of the gut lining, balancing blood sugar levels and by supporting the liver, the important nutrients from all of those brain-healthy foods can actually get to work. Not only that, but inflammation will begin to decrease (and chronic inflammation is the basis of SO MANY conditions, including Alzheimer’s).⁣

Its challenging to make this kind of change on your own. ⁣

BUT I HAVE SOME GREAT NEWS!! 🥳 You don’t have to!!⁣

I’ve designed a 12-week, small group program that will help you get rid of some of those pesky issues that you face every day, like gas, bloating, constipation, sugar cravings, unwanted weight, crappy energy levels. ⁣

BUT, not only that, but you will also begin to decrease inflammation, set the stage to build brain health and start to reduce your Alzheimer's risk. ⁣

The advantage of participating in a group program is that you will have the added support and encouragement of your group mates. Sometimes it is helpful to have other like-minded people, with whom to share the experience, to add another layer of accountability and to help each other stay motivated! ⁣

This small group program is limited to only six peeps & is set to begin mid-July. ⁣

Hand up if you agree! 🙋‍♀️⁣

Lowering our Alzheimer’s risk starts with belief that it is possible followed by the correct actions to start to effect change. ⁣

More things you can start to do:⁣

Eliminate processed foods because they⁣
• Have very low nutrient value, ⁣
• Often have additional, toxic, ingredients that our bodies have a hard time recognizing as food and are stressful to the body⁣
• All of these contribute to inflammation (a hallmark of Alzheimer’s)⁣

Adopt a more whole foods, ketogenic way of eating that contains omega-3 fats – omega-3 fats like those found in salmon and mackerel PLUS a wide variety of dark leafy greens (kale, spinach, arugula, watercress, collards, chard, bok choy, etc), which contain loads of vitamins and minerals that support brain health and reduce inflammation, like folate and magnesium.⁣

Get enough good quality sleep – sleep is incredibly important for brain health! Good sleep (quality and quantity) helps support our brains INDIRECTLY (ex. by reducing inflammation) and DIRECTLY (ex. by storing information and cleaning out of toxins and metabolic waste. ⁣

Brisk walking, eating a variety of mushrooms (lion’s mane, shiitakes, reishi, maitake and others 🍄), cannabis, nature, yoga and meditation, plus so much more!!⁣

What all of this means is that we have an actual opportunity to lower our risk of developing Alzheimer’s through what we eat and how we live, regardless of any genetic predisposition! ⁣

By working with me, you can save a lot of resources (time, effort and money) and stress, and you’ll have the support you need to begin to effect positive change MUCH sooner than if you were to go it on your own.⁣

06/06/2021

A great way to boost your memory and mind 🧠 is to ensure optimal intake of some very key nutrients, including choline.⁣

Choline breaks down into phosphatidylcholine, which in turn, with the help of vitamin B5, converts to acetylcholine in the body.⁣

Acetylcholine is our memory neurotransmitter, helping us learn and retain new information 🙌.⁣

A great way to start to ensure your body is getting what it needs to make acetylcholine, is to eat foods high in choline.⁣

These foods include (but not limited to) eggs, beef (esp. liver), sardines, legumes (esp. soybeans and peanuts), as well as cruciferous vegetables (Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli), quinoa and potatoes.⁣

And, BONUS, many of these foods are also high in vitamin B5! ⁣

With the right mindset and support, along with giving your body the proper foods and improving how you live and sleep, you can improve digestion, get rid of brain fog and boost your mental focus and memory. ⁣

And because sometimes it is helpful to share an experience, to add another layer of accountability and to help stay motivated, I have created a small group program that will help you, and a handful of other like-minded people, get started on the path to boosting your brain health and lowering your risk of developing Alzheimer’s. ⁣

This program is all about improving gut health. Why? Well, what greater way to better ensure that the brain-supportive nutrients in the foods you are eating (like those shown in this post), are being digested, absorbed and metabolized properly? ☺️⁣

There is a synergism between selenium and vitamin E, and as a pair has been coined “The Anti-Aging Duo”. And yet, just like vitamin E, selenium often gets overlooked as an important micronutrient, particularly for brain health. ⁣

Selenium has anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties, particularly once the body has used it to make selenoproteins. In addition to regulating immune cell function, selenoproteins help modulate some neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine, the memory neurotransmitter. ⁣

Selenium deficiency has been associated with memory decline and studies have demonstrated that circulating selenium levels to be significantly lower in people with Alzheimer’s when compared to healthy controls. ⁣

Brazil nuts are one of the richest food sources of selenium; but it is typically recommended to eat no more than four Brazil nuts a day. ⁣

Other food sources of selenium include oysters and other shellfish, salmon and halibut, mushrooms, brown rice and other whole grains, blackstrap molasses, and garlic and onions.⁣

I can help you figure out what will work best for you as an individual to ditch your gut issues and brain fog, and improve your memory, focus, and mental clarity, so you can feel more calm, happy, and confident. ⁣

Time is on your side! 🕰 🙌⁣

Alzheimer’s doesn’t develop overnight. ⁣

The process actually starts 20-30 years before symptoms start to appear. So, if someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 70, that means that it started to develop when that person was as young as 40. (And for early onset, which typically starts to appear in our 50s, then the process started as early as our 20s!!!!)⁣

This is great news, actually!!⁣

It means that if we begin to take action now, we have a real opportunity to effect change.⁣

More good news is that genes have very little to do with whether or not we develop it … nutrition, sleep, stress and lifestyle are far greater risk factors.⁣

So, whether or not we carry a particular gene that predisposes us to developing Alzheimer’s (and hey, I am ApoE 4/4 🧬☺️), we have to pay attention to what we eat, how we sleep, think, and live.⁣

Alzheimer’s is horrific -- nobody wants that for themselves! And you know this already if you have experienced it firsthand with a family member.⁣

And caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is draining – physically, mentally, emotionally, financially. I am certain that most of us would do anything in our power to avoid our spouse or children having to live through the grief and sadness.⁣

The right mindset and support along with giving your body the proper foods and improving how you live and sleep, you can improve digestion, get rid of brain fog and boost your mental clarity and memory. I help women/moms aged 45-55 improve their cognitive function and lower their Alzheimer’s risk!!!

I have had a strong interest in the relationship between health and nutrition since my early twenties, but it took me more than two decades to turn this passion into a profession. The turning point for me, following a successful career in seabird ecology, was seeing family members develop Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Watching my grandmother lose her eyesight and a leg from T2D, AND observing my grandfather and, 20 years later, my mother, gradually deteriorate from once-vibrant people because of AD, was heartbreaking!

These experiences reconnected me to my relationship with nutrition, and the extraordinary benefits that it can have on health. This knowledge is extremely empowering, not only in the midst of illness but also in reducing the risk of developing illness. All of this led me to changing my career path and completing the necessary education at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition (CSNN) to become a holistic nutritionist with the goal of helping people with similar experiences.

I have confirmed through DNA testing that I carry two copies of the APOE4 Alzheimer’s gene, which, although not surprising given my family history, was scary nevertheless. However, with extensive research and education, I now know that so much can be done through changes to diet and lifestyle to help minimize my risk of developing it. I am no longer concerned that I carry the highest genetic risk factor, and, in fact, I feel empowered!

A very important concept to understand is that the same things that contribute to, and worsen, Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) are also closely linked to the development of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) - chronically elevated levels of blood sugar, insulin resistance and inflammation (in fact, Alzheimer’s is becoming known as Type 3 Diabetes). We now know so much about AD, making reducing the risk of developing it far more achievable. Reducing the risk of developing T2D and AD can start by making empowering changes to diet and lifestyle.
