These are 4 guidelines to long term weight loss

1) Balance your hormones - from female and stress hormones to insulin and hormones that regulate your appetite. When these are out of balance you may be giving your body the message to store fat or increasing the desire to eat.

2) Get the nutrients you need. When you eat a nutrient rich diet you feel less hungry. Plus if you are low in certain nutrients, including those that regulate the creation and storage of fat, you are likely to gain weight.

3) Reduce disruptive foods. Your body has a number of systems that, when they are out of balance, can trigger cravings, overeating or increased fat storage. Eating foods that disrupt these systems, therefore makes it harder to lose weight or sustain your weight loss

4) Reduce obesogens - Many chemicals in our everyday lives can trigger weight gain, even with low levels of exposure.

When you follow these guidelines, it becomes so much easier to eat healthily and to lose weight.

What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to eating healthily?

Food is often a big part of the festive season. How many times have you thought "It's Christmas, I'll get back on track in January".
But it doesn't have to be all-or-nothing when it comes to eating heathily. Many of the foods we traditionally have at this time of year are good for us! What if you moved the balance slightly towards these healthier foods and consumed a little less of the others?

Lets take a look at some of the healthier festive foods.

Turkey - contains tryptophan, which your body converts into serotonin, the feel good chemical

Brussels sprouts - packed full of nutrients that support your liver detoxification process.

Parsnips - Good source of fibre which supports your digestion. Also high in vitamin C and other immune-protective antioxidants.

Salmon - Good source of the essential omega 3 fats that reduce inflammation and support female hormone balance. They may also help reduce your appetite and increase the amount of fat you burn.

Cinnamon - Anti-inflammatory and supports blood sugar balance which helps maintain stable energy levels and reduce cravings.

Dark chocolate - high in antioxidants. Cocoa is also a sirtfood so helps activate your "skinny gene". Chose dark chocolate with a higher percentage of cocoa as it will also contain less sugar.

Dates - Sweet, high in fibre and nutritious.

Cranberries - high in health protective antioxidants and often used to prevent urinary tract infections. But watch out for cranberry sauces as they often contain high levels of added sugar.

Nuts in their shells - when you crack your own nuts you are likely to consume smaller quantities. Raw unsalted nuts are high in nutrients including healthy fats.

Clove studded oranges - Oranges are high in fibre and health-promoting antioxidants. Cloves have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

These are 3 core things I believe about weight loss:
1) You are unique - just because a weight loss plan worked for your friend does not mean it will work for you.
2) You need to target what’s behind YOUR weight - discover what’s triggering YOUR cravings or excess fat storage - then target the root causes.
3) And you need to find a way of eating that you enjoy, that works for you - otherwise it’s not sustainable.

This is really important otherwise you can keep trying one diet after another. Maybe they work for a bit, but then you gain back the weight you lost. And maybe a bit more. Which is really frustrating.

Caffeine can push your blood sugar levels up which causes you to release more insulin. Don’t beat yourself up if you give into cravings. This just keeps you stuck in this cycle. When we get into self-blame we feel we’ve blown it and we carry on overeating or eating unhealthy foods. Its not your fault you can’t resist the cravings. They are triggered by your body to get you to eat. Often they are are part of your body’s survival mechanism - so to resist you are fighting something incredibly powerful.
