Celebrating the 4th of July with a child who has special needs can be both fun and manageable with a bit of planning. Here are some tips to ensure an enjoyable and safe holiday:

1. Prepare in Advance:
đŸ’„Use social stories to explain what the day will involve. This can help reduce anxiety by making the day’s events more predictable.
- Visual Schedules: Create a visual schedule of the day’s activities so your child knows what to expect.

2. Consider Sensory Needs:
đŸ’„Ear Protection: Fireworks and loud events can be overwhelming. Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs can help reduce sensory overload.
- Comfort Items: Bring favorite comfort items, such as a blanket or a favorite toy, to provide a sense of security.

3. Plan for a Safe Space:
- 🙉Quiet Zone: Identify a quiet space where your child can retreat if they feel overwhelmed. This could be a designated room in your house or a quieter area at an event.
- Familiar Environment: If your child is sensitive to new environments, consider celebrating at home or in a familiar setting.

My sidekick! I talk to parents regularly about how peers are important. Therapists and parents aren’t peers. That quickly rolls into finding the right peer to help their child acquire plays skills. How lucky am I that I can bring my sweet sidekick with me to play with little friends?
One of my little friends was so excited to have a playmate this week. She looked at me and said “Happy” which led to us drawing faces with emotions. Something as simple as bringing a peer sparked social opportunities and fine motor play. Pure magic!

Here are some additional reasons that peers can reap immense benefits.

Peer play is essential for toddler socialization as it helps develop social and communication skills, emotional regulation, understanding of social norms, and relationship-building. It also enhances problem-solving abilities, creativity, self-esteem, and confidence, all contributing to healthy overall development.

Giant shout out to Malena Suarez Martinez and her incredible business partner Michelle. They have opened up a beautiful new facility in Weston. If you don’t know iRock Behavior you should.

I met Malena 10 years ago when she was as hired as a new but yet very experienced Behavior Therapist where we both worked. I was assigned as her “Buddy” to show her the ropes. She changed the kids lives in a big way in a much smaller space then she has now.

I can’t imagine anyone out there hasn’t been touched by cancer in some way. I know that it has touched my life more then I would like.

Did you know:

đŸ”„Oranges, besides being high in Vit C, have every class of cancer inhibitor known.

 Never has a child been excited to button something. That’s where we have to get creative. My sweet little friend needed to be motivated. Buttoning a shirt of my leg was apparently the giggliest thing ever. The goal was for him to button. Did it matter where? Not to us.

Parenting brings a level of overwhelming at time. Parenting and managing the holidays can be next level. Here are some strategies for parents to keep in mind during the jolliest season of all.
1. Plan and Prioritize: Create a realistic schedule and prioritize essential tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Set realistic expectations for what you can accomplish during the holiday season.
2. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no and set clear boundaries. It’s okay to decline invitations or additional commitments if they add too much stress.
3. Delegate Tasks: Share responsibilities with family members or friends. Delegating tasks can lighten your load and make holiday preparations more manageable.
4. Take Breaks: Allow yourself breaks to relax and recharge. Whether it’s a short walk, a few minutes of deep breathing, or a quiet moment alone, taking breaks can help reduce stress.
5. Focus on What Matters: Remember the true meaning of the holidays and focus on what brings you joy and fulfillment. Don’t get caught up in perfection; appreciate the moments and connections.
6. Practice Self-Care: Prioritize self-care activities such as exercise, sufficient sleep, and healthy nutrition. Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is crucial during busy times.

It’s no secret that eating healthy around the holiday season can be tough - this is definitely the
time of year when we are surrounded by delicious, albeit unhealthy food. And thinking ahead and having a plan can make all the difference. Because even though I think we can all say weare so grateful to be celebrating and getting together again, we also want to move into 2024
feeling fit, nourished and happy. We have less than 30 days left in 2023. I I can send you
my top tips via texts to help you with healthy recipes, strategies, motivation and tips to help you
through the holidays so you can stay healthy along the way.

Today I did a thing and I am so excited to share it soon. It brought together a few of my favorite things.
I will tell you that the beach was involved. Here is some great info on the benefits of the beach.

Being by the sea has several benefits. The sea air is rich in negative ions, which can promote feelings of well-being and reduce stress. The calming sound of waves and the scenic views can also have a relaxing effect on the mind.

Back to school means backpacks!
A child's backpack should ideally weigh no more than 10-15% of their body weight. For example, if a child weighs 50 pounds, their backpack should weigh around 5-7.5 pounds. It's important to use this guideline to prevent potential strain on the child's back, shoulders, and posture. Encourage them to only carry essential items and to use both shoulder straps to distribute the weight evenly. Rolling backpacks can also be a good option to minimize strain on the child's body.
