Plastic is part of modern life and menstruation is no exception. Many of the tampons and sanitary towels began to include plastic in their basic design in the mid-twentieth century - sometimes for reasons that "improved" the design, but often for more trivial reasons. Having a sense of the plastic waste present in menstrual products is difficult, partly because they are labeled medical waste and do not require screening, and partly because investigations on the scale of the problem are scarce. However, the estimates of the likely production of these products are surprising: in 2018 alone, in the USA, 5.8 billion tampons were sold and, over a lifetime, a woman uses between 5,000 and 15,000 sanitary towels and tampons, the vast majority ends up in landfills in the form of plastic waste. Trying to dissociate plastic from menstrual care will require more than design innovation, because the reasons why plastic is so rooted in these products are intertwined in a web of culture, shame, science and more. Menstrual problem of plastic In the USA, most women are menstruating for about 40 years, about 5 days a month, or about 2,400 days over their lives - in all, it's about 6 and a half years. All that menstrual fluid has to go somewhere. It usually ends in a tampon or sanitary napkin and, after its brief moment of use, these products end up in the trash.
