For my Lupus people out there - I highlight that processed meats are generally higher in sodium. What does that mean for you? Higher sodium intake is not good for people with Lupus nephritis or high blood pressure.

🔍 New research links high meat consumption, especially processed meats, to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

But my quotes emphasize that this study is observational and should be interpreted cautiously.
An observational study means they noticed that some of people with type 2 diabetes had slightly higher processed meat intake. We don’t know all of the other associations - how many vegetables were they eating, do they exercise, what else is in their diet? Everything should be considered holistically when interpreting these results and also thinking about diet recommendations.

Processed meats are rich in saturated fats, which can contribute to insulin resistance. It’s essential to consider diet and lifestyle holistically, and make personalized decisions for your health. 🌱

“Shannon Boxx was playing soccer for the U.S. National Team when she was diagnosed with lupus at 30. The Olympic gold medalist announced her diagnosis publicly in 2012 and began working with the Lupus Foundation of America to spread awareness of the disease. She told CNN that she would “will herself” through training sessions before finding the right medication to control her flare-ups.
Lupus hasn’t stop Shannon from competing in Olympic Games since finding out she had the disease. The athlete also told CNN that her key to surviving is having the right support system, saying, “I think it’s important that you have someone who understands that you can feel good a majority of the time, but are there for you when a flare-up happens. I also believe it’s important to stay active, whatever level of activity feels comfortable to you. I hope this is where I have inspired people. I haven’t let this disease stop me from doing the sport that I love.” - article on wonderwall.com

BIG NEWS!
Join Wednesday, July 17th at 9:30am PST for our next installment of “News From the Lab” with Lupus LA! In this session, we discuss what scientists say is a newly-identified root cause of — which could pave the way for new treatment!

We’ll be joined by Lupus LA Medical Advisory Board Co-Chair and Associate Professor of the Department of Medicine (Division of Rheumatology) at Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Caroline Jefferies, PhD, and Lupus LA Founding Chairman, board member, producer and lupus patient, Adam Selkowitz, to discuss how an imbalance of T cells, which play a key role in the body’s immune response, could explain most cases of the lupus, according to this new research.

Lupus has had a big year with CAR-t therapy and now this!!! Exciting news! But what does it mean?

Here’s the quotes from the research team: ““We’ve identified a fundamental imbalance in the immune responses that patients with lupus make, and we’ve defined specific mediators that can correct this imbalance to
dampen the pathologic autoimmune response,” said co-corresponding author Deepak Rao, MD, PhD, an assistant protessor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a rheumatologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and co-director of its Center for Cellular Profiling.
In the study, the scientists reported a new pathway that drives disease in lupus. There are disease-associated changes in multiple molecules in the blood of patients with lupus.
Ultimately, these changes lead to insufficient activation of a pathway controlled by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), which regulates cells’ response to environmental pollutants, bacteria or metabolites. Insufficient activation of AHR results in too many disease-promoting immune cells, called the T peripheral helper cells, that promote the production of disease-causing autoantibodies.
To show this discovery can be leveraged for treatments, the investigators returned the aryl hydrocarbon receptor-activating molecules to blood samples from lupus patients. This seemed to reprogram these lupus-causing cells into a cell called a Th22 cell that may promote wound healing from the damage caused by this autoimmune disease.

Wohoo!!! In the meantime, before this can be a treatment for all - if you’re ready to feel better NOW - message me the word LUPUS today for more info !

Did you know? Olive oil, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, may not only support your physical health but also offer protection against dementia. Omega-3s are essential for our bodies but can't be made internally, so why not get them from delicious sources like olive oil? Studies even suggest it lowers dementia risk! Remember, in addition to olive oil, keep up with exercise and healthy eating for a brain-boosting combo.

23/04/2024

Low vitamin D is associated with increased fatigue, pain, mood changes, bone and joint pain, and muscle cramps or weakness. Sound a lot like Lupus? Yeah!

Low vitamin D is common for people living with Lupus because of Lupus disease activity, corticosteroids (prednisone or prednisolone) and avoiding sunlight if you have photosensitivity.
If you aren't having your Vitamin D regularly checked, request your doctor run your labs. If your Vitamin D is low, taking Vitamin D supplements can be helpful in your symptoms: reducing fatigue, improving joint/muscle pain, and for the long term ensuring that your bones are staying strong!

Not related directly to Lupus - I provided my expert quotes on Novo Nordisk discontinuing Levemir. Levemir is a long-acting insulin particularly helpful for during pregnancy and for growing teens and children.

While this likely doesn’t apply to you - what does apply to every patient is when pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies discontinue medication because it’s no longer as profitable.

Unfortunately, doctors, patients, and everyone should be raising their voices for fair pricing for insulin, lupus medications, and many others!
Healthcare should not be this expensive! And pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies should not be reporting record profits year after year while patients struggle with medical debt.

Happy Friday everyone!

I was so so so proud of myself that I didn’t fall straight into the water! I certainly was sore the next day though - I used muscles that have not been used in that way!

09/04/2024

Lupus can affect people of all ages - neonatal lupus affects newborns of women with Lupus, juvenile Lupus can affect young adults, but the majority of people with Lupus are diagnosed between the ages of 15-44 years old and 9 out of 10 people with Lupus are women.

Because the majority of people living with Lupus are on the younger end, often times you'll hear a lot of, "but you don't look sick". Not only is this frustrating, but also can only add to the struggle of getting through the day. Even more annoying, people trying to get diagnosed accurately, have their diagnosis delayed because a doctor will say, "you're too young to have Lupus." This is dangerous and just not true!

Save for a reminder that you're not alone out there.

March is Autoimmune Awareness month. What is an autoimmune disease? It is a disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy body cells.

~ There are over 100 autoimmune diseases.
~ 8 out of 10 people with autoimmune diseases identify as a woman
~ Estimated 50 million people in the US are living with 1 or more autoimmune diseases
~ Autoimmune Diseases tend to cluster in families
~ Autoimmunity is now one of the most common diseases diagnosed - ahead of cancer and heart disease

What can you do about it? Take a proactive approach with your nutrition and lifestyle! So many of our autoimmune disease flares are related to poor diet and stress. Stressors can include not getting enough sleep, not moving your body in ways that create joy, lack of social support, and other things in your environment.

If you're ready to take control of your autoimmune disease, message me today! If you have LUPUS and want to get started, message me the word LUPUS today!
