Not quite! There are great products in the middle aisles - some that support a well-balanced diet and others we should consume in moderation. Instead of focusing on the aisles that have the foods we canโt haveโฆ letโs learn to walk down the sections confidently, knowing we can incorporate many different foods into our diet.

I love how food connects us. Itโs a commonality we all share. Often times we are so focused on what and when we are eating that we forget food has a social component worth prioritizing. One of the key similarities identified across blue zones (areas with the highest number of people over the age of 100) is the amount of social connectivity they share. Shared meals are essential, after dinner wine with friends is not uncommon, and recipes are passed down through generations. Where there is food, there is community and connection.

Whether itโs a meal shared with loved ones, a quick coffee date, or a friendly encounter at the grocery store, food brings us together and keeps us connected.ย

๐๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐ข๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ:
1 eggplant
1 cup Pasta sauce
2-3 Sausages (optional โ this time I used leftover breakfast sausages that I sliced up. However, I prefer taking a couple of sausages out of their casing and frying them up with the kale)
1 cup chopped kale
1/4 cup Cottage Cheese
1 tsp Garlic powder
1/2 tsp Basil leaves
Salt & pepper to taste

๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ:
1.ย ย ย ย Cut eggplant into thin slices. Salt both sides of the eggplant and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Pat excess water off.
2.ย ย ย ย Mix the cottage cheese, precooked sausages (sliced), sauteed kale, 1/4 pasta sauce, garlic, basil, salt & pepper.
3.ย ย ย ย Pour some of the pasta sauce on the bottom of the baking dish. Alternate layers of eggplant and filling until you reach the top of your pan or until you run out of eggplant.
4.ย ย ย ย Top with remaining sauce, add cheese and bake for 35-45 minutes at 350.

This would make for a great side dish or served on top of a bed of noodles.

Whether your goal is to lose weight or notโฆ There are so many ways to incorporate foods you enjoy into your diet. Even though scientific evidence suggests restriction is not sustainable, it is still the backbone of many diet interventions.
In a study analyzing brain activity during periods of restriction, scientists found that those with restrained eating patterns had stronger activation in brain areas related to desire, food liking, and reward seeking. By suppressing their desires to consume the restricted food, a mental and behavioural mismatched occurred. The participants could no longer differentiate between their current behaviour (eating restricted food) and goals (avoiding the restricted food) causing them to over consume when food was abundant.
So instead of saying, โI canโt eat that,โ I would encourage you to consider โhow can I enjoy this food in a balanced way.โ AND if a diet says you canโt eat certain foodsโฆ move on because itโs not the solution your looking for.

Sharing one of my all-time favourite meals. I honestly donโt know how cooking can be more effortless than this. Whether you have leftover chicken to use up or you're looking for an alternative to your usual side dishes, this flavourful dish will hit the spot.
๐๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐ข๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ:
Spaghetti squash
Chicken
Feta cheese
Sun-dried tomatoes
Spinach
Pesto
Cheese - topping
Cook your spaghetti squash in the oven or microwave (12-15mins). It should be slightly undercooked (cooked enough to pull the spaghetti squash apart but not mushy). Once youโve scrapped the inside from the squash shell, add all of the ingredients to the bowl and mix. Return the mixture to the skins, top with cheese and cook until cheese is crispy on top.
