Teaching your child to sleep doesn't mean you won't be there to support them along the way! 🩷

💤As a sleep consultant, I work with families to establish healthy sleep while maintaining parent presence and encouragement throughout the transition. 🫂

From personal experience, sleep is a personal matter that is valued differently by different families. For me, sleep was and still is sacred and protected.

One of the reasons parents fear sleep training is because they think it will cause attachment issues with their child. There is no evidence to support this claim, and I can tell you, my daughter and I have a wonderful bond. 💕

Thanks to sleep, I am a more patient and present parent, and my child is happy, healthy, and well-rested.

Welcome to my page! 👋

I'm Stephanie! I'm a registered nurse with over 13 years of experience working in various areas in the hospital!

In 2018, I became a mom, and even though I was a postpartum nurse, I really struggled with feeding and sleep for my new baby. 👶

🚩Last year, I joined a global team of nurses who own their own practices, supporting families with all the big milestones.

I'm also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and Sleep Consultant! 💤 My focus areas are ones that I am passionate about as I really do believe that a well-fed, well-rested baby makes parenting so much easier.

As if the 4 month regression wasn't enough, but your baby might also add becoming mobile to the mix!

Babies can start to roll as early as 4 months old! 🫣 Many roll from their belly to their back first while practicing tummy time. Rolling from back to front takes alot of core strength and usually comes a bit later, BUT it's not unheard of to start around 4 months.

What can you expect with rolling and sleep? ⤵️

Your baby will very likely roll in their sleep space, and they may get frustrated by not being able to roll back.

They may love belly sleeping! 🩷 This is OK once they get themselves there, but you should always put them down on their back!

🚩Are you worried about not making enough milk?

Before you go on a stressful power-pumping, lactation cookie 🍪 binge, ask yourself these questions:

1️⃣ Is your baby gaining weight and following their growth curve?

2️⃣ Do they have 6+ wet diapers a day and multiple soft yellow poops?

3️⃣ Are they actively feeding at least 8 times a day?

4️⃣ Is your baby content in between feedings?

If the answer is yes to all these questions, then you are more than likely making enough milk! 🌟

⚠️ If you answered no to any of these, I'd encourage you to have a feeding assessment by a lactation consultant!

🤱This week on Feeding Friday, we're talking about cookies! Lactation cookie, to be exact! 🍪

Lactation cookies have been around for a while, but the number of commercial brands has increased a lot in recent years. There are a number of brands that offer different flavors that all promise an increase in your milk supply!

But are they a necessary part of a lactating person's diet in order to make and maintain a healthy milk supply? 🧐

Let's discuss!

🚩 The foundation of a healthy milk supply is based on FREQUENT and EFFICIENT milk removal. If your baby isn't extracting milk properly, or you aren't pumping enough, then your body will slow production.

You also need to fuel your body to support lactation. A BALANCED DIET and adequate water intake another key component to milk production.

➡️ Lactation cookies often contain galactogogues (foods or medication that may increase supply) such as oats, brewer's yeast, and flax seeds. They also contain a lot of sugar and potentially other not-so-healthy ingredients.

🍪 Lactation cookies can be a nice treat and may give you a temporary boost to your milk supply, but you can't out-eat feeding issues or health conditions that are causing low milk supply.

✨️My recommendation? Save your money and buy regular cookies, and if you are concerned about low milk supply, meet with a lactation consultant for a feeding assessment!

While not ideal, short naps are pretty normal for babies between 3-6 months old. 🩷

Here are some things you can try to help extend naps.

1️⃣ Use appropriate wake windows in combination with sleepy cues to guide naps.

2️⃣ Try extending a short nap with contact or have a nap on-the-go.

3️⃣ Just roll with it! If they have a short nap and you can't extend it, keep going with your day and adjust the next nap to be a bit earlier!

I had no idea when I became a parent over 6 years ago that my baby slept so differently from me!

I was also fascinated to hear that newborns have their mother's melatonin circulating in their bloodstream until they are about to start producing their own! This circulates at all hours, which is why newborns are generally sleepy at all hours of the day. This maternal melatonin starts to decrease after a few weeks, and your baby will start to become more awake.

🚩Melatonin is also present in your breastmilk and helps your baby settle for nighttime. 🌛

➡️ Pumping tip! If you are pumping, date and time your milk! Offer milk pumped at night during the night as it contains melatonin to help your baby sleep! 💤

🚩Sleep isn't just important; it's vital! 💤

As a new parent, I knew I'd lose some sleep, but I had no idea how many hours or how much it would affect me physically, cognitively, and emotionally.

At my peak of exhaustion, I was averaging about 4-5 hours of sleep a night and caring for a baby who was having feeding difficulties.

⭐️At 4 months, I dove into teaching my baby to sleep independently, and it changed my life! I felt rested, more present for my baby, and mentally capable of handling the daily demands of motherhood.

🧘‍♀️ A full night's sleep made postpartum more enjoyable, and my daughter was so happy. Six years later, she's a great sleeper, and the anxiety I once felt at bedtime dreading a terrible night has melted away. 🥰
