🌟It is completely normal for babies to need night feedings! However, it's good to know the difference between active feeding versus inactive feeding just for comfort.
▪️An active feeding is when your baby is taking big sucks and swallows and is alert.
▪️An inactive/sleepy feeding will have nibbly, flutter sucking and minimal swallowing. Their eyes will be heavy or closed.
If your family is happy feeding your baby to sleep, then keep going, Mama! 💪

🚩So your newborn fell asleep, 😴 and you want to put them down so you can eat, sleep, shower, have coffee etc. 🫣
You put them down asleep, then BAM, they're awake and ready to party for around 24 that day 😏
Try this instead!⤵️
1️⃣Wait 15 minutes before you put your sleeping baby down! This will get them into a deep sleep and make the transfer easier.
2️⃣Put them down on their side at first, pat their bum and shhhhhhh.
3️⃣Once they're settled, roll them onto their back and leave your hand on their chest for 2-5 minutes.

🚩If you're hoping your baby will take a pacifier but you are struggling with it, try this! ⤵️
▪️Find a rounded pacifier (my favorites are Avent and Dr. Browns)
▪️Point the pacifier up toward the roof of their mouth to elicit their suck reflex
▪️Hold it there while they get suction
This may take some trial and error! So keep practicing! ❤️

🌡We're talking temperature today! Could it be the reason for your baby's early morning wakings? 🥶
Let's talk about it! ⤵️
Early morning sleep is HARD! If the environment isn't ideal, then it makes sleep more difficult!
When it comes to temperature, being too cold may be your culprit!
‼️ Check your baby's core temperature by touching their chest and the back of their neck. Don't base their temperature on if their hands and feet are cool.
🚩Dress your baby as you would dress yourself, plus a little extra for sleep at night. If your baby's room is hard to cool and is warm during the day, especially in the summer months, dress them down and use a 0.5-1 TOG sleep sack. For nights, a long sleep sleeper, and a 1-2.5 TOG sleep sack depending on the season.

🌄 Early mornings are tough! 😫
Now that the sun is rising earlier and stays out later, you may be noticing your baby is having a harder time sleeping 😴
Light affects melatonin release and can rouse a sleeping child earlier than their ideal wake-up time.
A really dark room is so helpful in establishing great sleep for children! (And for you, too!)

🚩Is it time to move your baby to a sleep sack? 😴
This transition can be hard for a baby who is used to being swaddled! Not to mention, it can also be anxiety inducing for parents who need sleep!
➡️ Start by unwrapping one of your baby's arms. If that goes well, try adding the other arm.
⚠️ The beginning of the night may go better than the early mornings when sleep pressure is not as high! It's ok to start off with one or both arms out and need to revert back to full swaddling later in thr night!

🚩Not all babies sleep 12 hours a night! 👶
I can probably count on one hand the number of times my 6 year old has slept for 12 hours. Despite what the internet says, a good majority of children don't sleep that long.
So, what IS normal? On average, 10.5-11.5 hours is normal! Some children have higher sleep needs, while others do fine with less!
If your child goes to bed at 8pm and consistently wakes up at 6am, happy as a clam and naps well, I'd roll with it! 🥰

🚩If your baby is gassy, try dinner and dessert! 🎂
If anyone has told you to feed x minutes on each side, scrap that mentality! In order for your baby to receive both components of your milk, they need to feed well on one side before going to the other side!
If you feed on one side and switch to the other side prematurely, your baby will likely only get a bunch of foremilk. This milk digests more quickly and can cause stomach upset and gas if it's all they're getting. ⤵️
✨️Instead, feed on one side, burp, and put them back on that side to encourage them to take as much as they can before offering the other side.
Other reasons for gas might include oral restriction, allergies or intolerances, and oversupply. If you've tried everything but still struggle with an unhappy baby, some investigation is needed 🔎

Just because 9oz bottles exist doesn't mean that's the norm. Try offering 3-4 ounces of milk or formula at a time using a paced feeding technique and a slow flow nipple!
