July 26 is Changing Spaces Awareness Day! I want to thank everyone who has shown support since I first posted about this accessibility issue one year ago. Thank you for recognizing that this is a quality of life issue, and that the lack of access to universal changing tables forces people to choose between active participation in their community and staying home to avoid an unsafe and undignified situation. I am so grateful to all who have donated, voted, provided words of encouragement, and spread the word over the past year. Progress is being made!

If you’d like to help the cause today, please consider sharing any of today’s posts or one of my podcasts, and keep in mind as you visit public spaces that you have the ability to use your voice to call out this barrier to accessibilty. Everything you need can be found in the Advocacy toolkit at https://www.changingspacescampaign.com/advocacy-toolkit

Everyone deserves a safe and private place to manage their toileting. Thank you for helping to make this a reality!

More photos from a wonderful day of advocacy for Changing Spaces Campaign at the Massachusetts State House. So great to see our favorite Representatives Sean Garballey, John Lawn and other legislators -including honoree Senator Jo Comerford. Wonderful to meet or catch up with many employees and advocates of MA agencies for the disabled community who are part of our coalition, and advocates for so many causes that benefit us all. Thank you The Arc of Massachusetts and Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council for hosting such a meaningful event.

Amazing new universal changing table on the market. This removes any barriers to installation - can be moved around the room/building and negates the ‘feasibility’ and ‘integrity of the building’ arguments

Great information on creating truly accessible public spaces

When my youngest son, Matthew was fourteen years old in 2014, I started devising my plan to make the community accessible; something I thought should have happened long before we came around. Matthew was a growing boy, but he would need incontinence care throughout his lifetime. I thought all I woul...

Drs. Cynthia Chambers and Julie Sears in Clemmer College of Education & Human Development were funded a grant by the Department of Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (DIDD) to install an adult size changing table on ETSU's Campus. The adult size changing table is located on the 2nd Floor of Lamb Hall in a family restroom.

Chambers stated, "Our ETSU community is made of many individuals who need varying kinds of supports. The adult changing table on our campus is one step in building a true inclusive community that is safe and respectful to our members including those with extensive support needs."
