To be simply stated, methoxsalen is a psoralen, that enables increased absorption of UV rays on the skin, useful particularly for patients with vitiligo, psoriasis and eczema.

Note that it does not work on its own, there has to be exposure to sunlight or uvb therapy, whichever you are inclined to.

The dosage comes in 10 mg tablets, which are taken as 30 mg 75 minutes before a PUVA(psoralen+ UVA) light treatment. It also comes as ointments to be usee topically

Variations of this dosage may exist based on weight and skin type according to the fitz patrick scale. So what worked for one person may not work for you.

Side effects: Patients who dont take it properly are at risk of phototoxicity.
Nausea and vomiting are common.

Do you know your skin type? Lets find out:

Skin type 1; always burns and peels on exposure to sun, but NEVER tans.

Skin type 2; burns and peels often on exposure to sun, but RARELY tans.

Skin type 3; burns rarely on exposure to sun, but sometimes tans.

Skin type 4; hardly burns, but tans often.

Skin type 5; almost never burns, but always tans.

Skin type 6; never burns, but always tans darkly.

Thus keeping your skin type in mind, those who live close to the equator should be careful with sun exposure and particularly utilize sunscreens with an spf rating of about 30 for skin types 1 and 2. Skin types 3 and 4 can use sunscreens with spf rating 15.

Wavelengths of 311-312 nm typically are used.

Treatment frequency has to be 2-3 times weekly. For 2-3 months for results to be seen.

More effective for lesions on the trunk and face.

Typically used for lesions covering more than 5 % of the body.
