Physical fashion trends come and go. It’s important to remember they often have nothing to do with health.
Nobody cared about a thigh gap until some dumb magazine made it a thing. Men of my grandfathers generation never thought about their 6-packs.
I always encourage clients to focus on heath. Whatever physical changes flow from that are a (normally welcome) supplementary benefit.

Does exercise affect your voice in a positive or negative way?
My colleague, the brilliant speech and language therapist , and I are doing some research into the effect of exercise on the vocal mechanism .
I would love to collect some anecdotal experience from friends and colleagues who might have something to say regarding this. (Not necessarily only singers/voice actors)
Let me know if you have something you’d like to share. I’d love to hear it.

Cultured meat potentially represents an opportunity for people to consume a culturally, culinarily and nutritionally significant commodity (meat) without the overwhelming ethical and environmental concerns currently attached.
But will an obsession with the undefined concept of ‘naturalness’ get in the way? Recent research suggests it likely will. Many people acknowledging a disgust factor that would likely prevent consumption.
I’m interested in your feelings about this new food commodity? Would you eat a steak grown in a lab?

In a time where mental health is likely to suffer, our diet can either be a useful tool to help us through a difficult period or a mechanism through which we further exacerbate mental health issues.

Are natural foods inherently better? Or is this pervasive idea based entirely on marketing?
In my new blog ‘The Naturalistic Fallacy in Nutrition’ I discuss this concept and talk about how it may impact the future of food consumption.

Liver is the most nutrient dense meat and arguably the most nutrient dense food in the world. But it is often forgotten in modern cooking.
Liver is high in:
▪️vitamin A
▪️folic acid
▪️zinc, copper and iron
▪️a range of B vitamins
▪️choline
▪️protein (while being low in fat)
And it’s extremely inexpensive!
There used to be some concern over the cholesterol content of liver. But recent research has suggested this is not an issue for the vast majority of people. Further, any concerns relating to liver storing ‘toxins’ are unfounded.
Avoid liver if you are pregnant or have gout. But if not fry some up with onions and enjoy. Delicious and nutritious!

Food is so much more than calories and macronutrient profile.
However, culture and marketing can trick us into believing certain things are healthy or unhealthy at face value.
Don’t let clever advertisements fool you. Many products advertised as healthy are just junk food in disguise.

The 10/10/10 principle.
Incorporate these 3 simple things into your daily routine for significant improvements to your general health.

With the new information regarding the COVID/obesity interaction clients have been asking me about BMI - body mass index.
On top of this I see the relatively simple and straightforward concept become the subject of internet vitriol. With many labelling it as pseudo science, junk science (or other fairly meaningless terms when not qualified with justification). I even notice some health professionals pandering to the unnecessary outrage.
In short BMI is a useful screening tool but a fairly crude (even unhelpful) diagnostic tool. That means:
▪️it is useful when discussing larger population health issues (eg COVID/obesity interaction)
▪️less useful when used to make specific determinations or predictions about the health of an individual
For this reason I recommend to my clients to not dismiss the concept outright - it certainly is not ‘junk science’. But it is important to not get hung up on this (or really any other) simple health measure.
Instead, focus on making general improvements to your diet and lifestyle. Manageable changes that make you feel better. Changes in things like BMI, weight, waist circumference etc will flow from this in a healthy and organic way.

Shocking new evidence regarding the COVID/obesity interaction and why I support the new government initiatives to tackle rates of overweight/obesity.

I work with clients of all sorts of needs, from simple weight management to nutrition associated with cancer treatment.
On top of this I have a particular specialisation in nutrition for optimal vocal health.
I am resident Nutritionist at the Voice Care Centre (London) where I work with singers and other professional voice users helping them to optimise their performance and treat vocal disorders.
This video is about the notion that milk and dairy products are bad for your voice. Is it a myth or is there any truth to it?
