For those of you with brain fog!!

For those of you with brain fog!!

In medical school, we’re taught the brain is immutable, that we can’t grow new brain cells or change the brain once dysfunction or injury has occurred. Now, we know that’s just not true. The decisions we make each and every day, like what we eat, how much sleep we get, and how often we move are all steps that can dramatically shift the health of the brain for the better. And there’s so much more we can do, too.⁣

A poor diet affects our brains in more ways than one. What we eat influences everything from our mood, ability to focus, and memory to our tiniest gut friends—microbes—and how well they function and fight off invaders. ⁣

Some of my favorite ways to make sure I keep my brain healthy are: ⁣
Make sure 75% of your plate is veggies.⁣
Eat plenty of healthy fats rich in omega 3s.⁣
Optimize protein — We need about 30 grams of protein per meal.⁣
Avoid sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, trans fats, food additives, and preservatives.⁣
Exercise regularly.⁣
Learn to actively relax the mind.⁣
Consciously build your network of friends, family, and community.⁣

Reminder: neurological symptoms could be a sign of Lyme disease. Don’t forget to rule it out!

"We were finally told he had neuropsychiatric #Lyme disease that started with a tick we had never seen..."

“Sometimes,” he said, “sometimes I wonder if I should just end it all. ... Then began our intense journey to doctors, many, many doctors, many psychiatric intake interviews."

Doctors thought he had borderline schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

Hi Folks! Just a heads up, the TICKS are out in full force...today I had a little boy jump up in my chair for a hair cut, he told me his head & neck hurt..I asked him to point where it hurts, he pointed to the occipital area in the back of his head, I took a look and saw 3 scab looking spots, those 3 spots were embedded LIVE ticks. He had been outside playing yesterday, so please check your kids for ticks, if they say they have a sore spot or boo boo on their head, pick thru their hair & take a look. Ty Lori

Tick season is here 😣 so make sure to do all the things you can to prevent it!

Here are some tips:

🌱 Keep your grass cut short

🌱 Put your clothes in the dryer for 20 minutes after being outdoors (it kills ticks on your clothes)

🌱 Wear repellent and light colored clothing

🌱 Do a tick check on you, your kids as your PETS too

Something to consider if you’ve been trying to get pregnant and having multiples miscarriages.
06/04/2019
Dr. Richard Horowitz

Something to consider if you’ve been trying to get pregnant and having multiples miscarriages.

My first experience of a patient with Lyme disease who transmitted the spirochete to her unborn child happened almost 2 decades ago. I treated a woman for several years for Lyme and TBD's and she was completely well post treatment. There were no active symptoms. She became pregnant, and suffered multiple miscarriages with each subsequent pregnancy. Each time she lost her child, we tested the fetus. Her fetus was PCR (DNA) positive for Borrelia burgdorferi several times. It was not until we put her on a specific antibiotic regimen (IV cephalosporins, followed by oral cephalosporins and macrolides) that she kept the baby, and gave birth to a healthy term child. (Cephalosporins like Ceftin are safe in pregnancy, as are macrolides like Zithromax, but Zithromax does not adequately cross the placenta). Her story is outlined in both of my books, Why Can't I Get Better? and How Can I Get Better?

Mary Beth Pfeiffer discusses the problems of Lyme and pregnancy and the associated medical politics surrounding this disease in this article in Scientific American. Thank you Mary Beth for helping to raise awareness of the dangers of tick-borne diseases in women wanting to get pregnant. Other tick-borne diseases including but not limited to babesia, bartonella and rickettisia can also affect pregnant women.
Any woman wanting to get pregnant who has symptoms consistent with Lyme and tick-borne disease should therefore be tested for a broad range of tick-borne infections, understanding the sensitivity and specificity of the tests. See the list of symptoms on the Horowitz MSIDS questionnaire, (i.e., HMQ which has been published and validated as a screening questionnaire in the International Journal of Medicine: Empirical Validation of the Horowitz Multiple Systemic Infectious Disease Syndrome Questionnaire for Suspected Lyme Disease. Maryalice Citera, Ph.D., Phyllis R. Freeman, Ph.D., Richard I. Horowitz, M.D., International Journal of General Medicine 2017:10 249–273) to determine the pre-test probability of having a TBD.
Protecting our future generations must be a top priority in health care. We discussed this problem when I co-chaired the HHS Other Tick-borne Diseases and Co-infections subcommittee. Please see our report on the HHS.gov web site for further information on the diagnosis and treatment of co-infections.
