Let's talk RSV. It seems to be the most common illness going around right now other than the Flu. RSV is known as Respiratory Syncytial Virus. 🦠

RSV is a common cold virus that is easily spread by sneezing, coughing, contact with secretions. The virus can affect adults as well as children.

Common symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, cough, sore throat and congestion and runny nose. I like to think of it as the "snottiest cold ever"! It truly has a distinctive cough and drainage from the nose is profuse.

Generally children over the age of 5y are affected mildly and under the age of 5y can develop more severe symptoms including wheezing, shortness of breath, low oxygen levels and may require hospitalization.

Treatment is supportive only but at times we will prescribe nebulizer treatments and oral steroids. Antibiotics do not treat RSV! However, ear infections can be common with RSV and an antibiotic might be prescribed.

RSV is very common and generally occurs during the winter months. There is now a vaccine available to help prevent illness. It is available for elderly people and children with chronic conditions. It may become more readily available in the next year or two.

Please feel free to contact me for further information.

I pray you have a safe and healthy Holiday Season ❤️

🎄✨ Holiday Health Tips for Little Ones! 🤒👶

As we gear up for a season filled with joy and festivities, let's ensure our little ones stay healthy and happy! 🎅🏽🤗 Here are some pediatric health tips for the holiday season:

1️⃣ Hand Hygiene Matters: Encourage regular handwashing for both kids and adults. It's the simplest way to prevent the spread of germs. 🧼👐

2️⃣ Layer Up for the Weather: Keep your kiddos warm to fend off winter chills. Dress them in layers, and don't forget the cozy hats and mittens! ❄️🧤

3️⃣ Stay Up-to-Date on Vaccinations: Ensure your little ones are up-to-date on their vaccinations to protect against common illnesses. 💉🩹

4️⃣ Balanced Nutrition is Key: Maintain a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and veggies to support their immune systems. 🥦🍊

5️⃣ Adequate Rest for the Win: Make sure your children get enough sleep to keep their immune systems strong. 😴💪

6️⃣ Limit Sugar Intake: While the holiday treats are tempting, try to limit sugary snacks to keep their energy levels steady. 🍬🚫

7️⃣ Plan for Indoor Activities: Prepare some fun indoor activities to keep the little ones entertained if the weather keeps you indoors. 🎨🎲

8️⃣ Be Mindful of Allergies: If your child has allergies, inform hosts about specific dietary needs or potential allergens. 🚫🥜

9️⃣ Emergency Preparedness: Know the location of the nearest pediatric emergency facility, just in case. 🏥🚑

👩‍⚕️ Remember, a healthy and happy holiday season starts with taking good care of our little ones. Share these tips with fellow parents and let's ensure a season full of laughter and good health! 🌟❤️

Symptoms from a cold can linger a lot longer than most parents realize. 2 weeks is not unusual and the cough can often linger for weeks. If your child is otherwise acting well, best to ride it out. Lots of fluids, saline spray to help congestion and honey at bedtime are all safe, easy, inexpensive and help reduce the symptoms.
