Great short read on fatigue vs depletion. Have you been feeling exhausted with this pandemic? Maybe it's more than just rest you need....https://lapininternational.com/leadership-blog/r-r/

We are currently in the toughest phase of our pandemic experience. To explain what I mean, consider two different states of being: fatigue and depletion. Fatigue is when a muscle or the mind has been used almost to the point of failure and it requires rest to recuperate. Contrastingly, depletion is....

I’ll often hear my clients tell me something that has stuck with them that I’ve said in a past session. I never knew my words had such impact. Every time this happens, I have to remind myself that people are actually listening! ⁣

I’m curious to hear what the best thing your therapist has told you?! ⁣

In my years of therapy, my big “Ah Ha!” moment came when my therapist told me that my over productivity was actually motivated by my anxiety! When I’m go-go-go, it’s often because I’m avoiding regulating myself. 🤯

Ever since then, I’ve been able to notice when I’m non-stop, need to slow down, and that something is up with my feelings and they need some attention. ⁣

What are some words of wisdom you’ve received from your therapist, manager, mentor, friend, parent, etc?! ⁣

Things feel a little different this year but so excited to still be part of #DisableTheLabel or #DTL2020.⁣

The New Mentality has been a near and dear part of my own mental health journey. Involved since 2010, I’ve spent time over the years in different roles advocating for #youthmentalhealth and am proud to be offering skills workshops to youth virtually this year! ⁣

Can’t wait to connect with youth on this platform and continue to show up for our community, connect, be authentic, and have FUN! ⁣

Slow down. ⁣
Be still. ⁣
Connect. ⁣
Feel. ⁣
Acknowledge. ⁣

"This is a moment of suffering." ⁣

We are all in this together, but day-to-day, we regulate ourselves. ⁣

At times, like right in this moment, I feel this weirdness in my chest. My anxiety, for days, has slowly been building. After a week of work I feel heavy. I feel weighted down. I question my abilities and thoughts begin to spiral around my "enoughness." ⁣

I slow down. I sit in silence with myself. I raise my hands to my heart. I acknowledge my feelings and the suffering I am experiencing by saying "this is a moment of suffering." All of sudden, my tension lessons, I can recognize this is a temporary feeling. I can continue to soothe myself by asking myself, "what do you need right now?" ⁣

And then I move when I am ready.

•Earth•⁣

Getting out and into nature is one of my favourite ways to self-care. It can be so incredibly grounding for our nervous systems to walk or sit and take in everything that Mother Earth has to offer us. ⁣

I know for many of us, it has felt really unsafe to leave the house. For those without a balcony or backyard, getting outside might only be to go to the grocery store. I know that it can be scary, but there are ways to still experience all that nature has to offer us by practicing safe social distancing, doing your part to walk down the correct direction of the sidewalk, going into the street if it is safe to do so to avoid another person, using sanitizer or wipes for your common spaces, and finally what we all know is best, washing our hands when we come home! ⁣

I really encourage you, today of all days, to go spend some time breathing fresh air, listening to the birds, staring at the sky and the trees! ⁣

Isn’t she beautiful?! 🌎 ❤️⁣

⁣⁣
So many of us are sitting, standing, walking - in this moment, wondering how do we keep going?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Much of my work during this time with clients has been helping people to be adaptable to each day. For many, that has been extremely difficult. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For those who struggle with anxiety or have a need to schedule things out or plan, moving through life in a day-to-day, moment-to-moment framework, seems next to impossible. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We explore small things like where we choose our thoughts to go as soon as we wake up. Instead of grabbing your phone first thing, give yourself some time to adapt to opening your eyes. Look around the room, take in your surroundings, listen to the sounds near and far. From there, perhaps you need to check-in with yourself. How are you landing today? Do you need something in particular? Can you commit to checking-in with yourself in the afternoon to see if you need to move, to eat, to dance, to laugh, to connect? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Our schedules have never been more limited, but they have also never been more OURS. This is your time to learn how to become more adaptable. By focusing instead on what the future outcomes will be and how we prepare for those things (because we have no idea what that will be like), can you instead gain more presence with yourself and your surroundings? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Allow yourself to slow down, give yourself those two minutes in bed before grabbing your phone, give yourself permission to check-in with yourself and really ask yourself "what do I need today?"⁣⁣
⁣⁣

Today I was supposed to be on a plane to Mexico with my mom for a week of sun and relaxation. But, plans can change! ⁣

It’s not too bad being stuck indoors when I’ve got my side-kick with me. Thank goodness for Char 🐶

I hope this time has been manageable for you all and you have found your own way of grounding yourself amongst the chaos! ⁣

* Control *

The world feels like it is completely out of our control. That means to many people, increased anxiety and fear. Uncertainty and the lack of control we feel surrounding what's to come, takes us out of our comfort zone.

I've been speaking to many clients, and even friends and family, about the fears that they are experiencing with COVID-19 appearing to have no end in sight. Many are terrified from the uncertainty that this virus brings with it. Financial fears, housing fears, food fears - it's all a little too much!

The one thing I've been trying to support them through is finding moments of control they have throughout their own day. Let's not look at the week, or a month from now, but focus on TODAY. Because COVID-19 is changing the landscape of the world so rapidly, it's a complete disservice to us to try and predict or prepare for what will happen next.

The BEST thing you can do for yourself right now if you are feeling like you a living in your fight/flight mode, is to not only distance yourself from social media, but find small bits of control throughout your day.

Set your alarm in the morning and continue with a morning routine that feels purposeful to you.

Put on a pair of jeans instead of staying in sweat pants or your PJ's all day. Continue to get ready as you would if you were going to work.

Schedule social media or "worry" time. Allow yourself to be influenced by the media and the chaos for only 20-30 minutes. But you CHOOSE when you want this to happen. The rest of the day when you are tempted, do your absolute best to commit to yourself that you've had your worry time, and to regain focus on what it is your doing. If you find your task is not engaging enough to centre you - find another task!

Take a lunch break. The weather is also something we do not have control over, but we're in Canada, eh! We are prepared for any weather. Go be outside in NATURE. It is so incredibly healing! Taking that time to breathe the fresh air, in any weather, will be a great reset for your body and mind.

Reach out to myself or other therapists who are offering online and phone sessions if you feel like you need support.

* Introduction *

This is me!

Hello! I'm Shannon and I am a Social Worker who lives and works in Hamilton, ON. Currently, I work in a home practice and often have my sidekick, Charlie, with me.

I am trying to rebrand myself - but I have to admit, this social media stuff is way over my head. What is branding yourself anyways?

I don't like pictures of myself. I cringe when I hear myself talk. Don't be mistaken; I love myself and definitely practice self-love! I just don't like to see/hear myself everywhere.

Truth be told, I often lose my phone in the house, don't have it on me for hours at a time, and let it die all too often. I try to do my best to be home when I am home, or be with people when I'm with people.

So, I'm sorry if you are here following me and there are long breaks in between my posts. Know that I am attempting to create better content and more engaging material for you to get to know me and learn a little along the way.

Please feel free to DM me or check out my website (new content coming soon) if you have any more questions or are interested in beginning your therapy journey with me! I look forward to meeting you.

* Intentions *

Ever have trouble with controlling the stories your mind takes you on throughout the day? Especially if something triggers you?

Ya, me too.

One strategy I often encourage people to try is intention setting. This is something that might sound familiar to you if you've taken a yoga class before. In the beginning of your practice, your teacher will often invite you to set an intention for that practice. Find peace, be present, etc.

We we sent intentions, we are more likely to challenge and control the stories our mind will inevitably take us on. It's just doing what it's supposed to be doing!

Last week, I knew it was time for me to start attempting to gain some control over the stories in my mind. They were unhelpful. Often leading me down a path I'd rather not go down.

I had a successful few days where I was able, when the stories came, to challenge them. I'd say something like "no mind, my intention today is .... " If I felt like that negative story kept coming, I kept repeating my intention, or imagining what my intention would look like - a person, a character, a blob - until I felt like I had some control again.

It is a practice, just like yoga, where some days you got it, and somedays it takes more effort or you might not even gain the control.

The point of this is: I'm trying again this week. I know that it takes effort and conscious awareness and I am committing myself to trying again and again.

What would your intention for today be?

•EMDR• ⁣

Trauma happens to many of us. We use language in our therapist world to describe trauma: “Big T’s” and “little t’s” are two different types of traumas that may impact us (complicated language, right?)⁣

Often, I see many of my clients minimize their experience. Their parents didn’t meet their emotional needs. A teacher called them out and completely embarrassed them in class. We were the eldest child and had to take on the role of parent by the age of 9. ⁣

All of these are considered areas of trauma. When a situation or moment in time stays with us and helps us to generate a narrative about ourselves that we then see the whole world staring back at us with - there may be a T or t associated with that. ⁣

EMDR is a therapy that has been used to help to process these traumas since the 1980s. It has scientific research that it can help alleviate distress symptoms associated with unresolved past difficulties. In fact, it’s helped millions of people alleviate symptoms associated with psychological distress. It’s a therapy led by the brain - not by the therapist. If you are interested in learning more about EMDR check out https://emdrcanada.org/emdr-defined/⁣

I’ve begun using this in my practice and am confident that it will help YOU to let go of your past. Whether it be with me or with another EMDR therapist, I really encourage you to give this therapy a try!

•New Beginnings• ⁣

I’ve had a lot of conversations with clients this week centred around time. ⁣

I’ve said goodbye to many people I’ve been working with for years. That, admittedly, was really hard for me. ⁣

I know as a therapist we aren’t supposed to get attached to our clients. But as humans, you can’t really distance yourself from genuinely building that relationship with someone who lets you in the way these people have. ⁣

Three years ago I set out on a journey of working on my own. Along the way I’ve learned so many things about working for others, with others, but mostly working with and for myself. ⁣

To the clients who have been on this journey with me, I cannot THANK YOU enough for letting me lean in with you. You took the risk of trusting me, and for that, I am incredibly grateful. ⁣

As I begin a new space, with new clients, Charlie and I cannot wait to get started and share this path with you to healing. I hope this space is as comfortable to you as it is for Char and I. ⁣

I’m incredibly scared and excited all over again to begin this chapter of my career and my own journey in Hamilton, hopefully with you! ⁣
