AMSA International - New Zealand Empowering New Zealand medical students to impact the Asia-Pacific-Oceania region for the better of health and health care. AMSA International is the peak representative organisation for medical students from the Asia, Pacific and Oceania regions.

The organisation was officially founded in Manila, Philippines in 1985 and now comprises of 24 Chapters, working together to realise AMSA International’s philosophy of Knowledge, Action and Friendship. The New Zealand chapter of AMSA International (AMSA NZ) has existed as an Observer Member of the organisation since 2008. After years of dormancy, the Chapter has been reestablished and is gaining momentum, with the recruitment of an Executive Committee committed to inspire the New Zealand medical students of today to become international healthcare leaders of tomorrow! Our vision is to empower New Zealand medical students to impact the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, for the better of health and health care, through the engagement of New Zealand medical students with the wider international network, the provision of opportunities to give back to the community, and engagement and advocacy for global and public health issues.

"World Cancer Day is very significant for us as we convey to the world our message of commitment, love, strength and hope to prevent and cure cancer, and relieve the pain when the battle is lost not before fighting it very hard." -- Manuel Maldonado Rodriguez - Liga Contra el Cáncer, Honduras.
World Cancer Day 2016-2018 will explore how everyone – as a collective or as individuals – can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer.

Just as cancer is able to affect every single person in different ways, everyone then holds the power to take various actions in order to reduce the impact that cancer has on individuals, families and communities.

World Cancer Day is a chance to reflect on what you can do, make a pledge and take action. Whatever you choose to do ‘We can. I can.’ make a difference to the fight against cancer. For more information about World Cancer Day, you can visit the website www.worldcancerday.org

Starting fresh offers excitement, and opportunity for change –same thing goes for the beginning of our beloved organization’s 2016/2017 tenure. In Issue #18, we welcome some new faces along with some familiar ones as we asked them to share their thoughts on this year’s World Mental Health Day! We also revisit recent chapter activities, AMSEP stories, and many more.

#RemovetheLabel Disabilities Awareness Campaign Day 1
SCORP Minorities Workshop- Disabilities: Why it Matters

'People usually don't know how to react to a doctor who's in a wheelchair. In my clinical years, there was a patient who came into the examination room and walked right back out, thinking I was in an appointment with the doctor I was attached to. So now I prefer wearing blue scrubs, because I often get mistaken for a patient if I’m only in my white coat or casual clothes. Even then, patients who are in bed often cannot see me because the bed is taller than my wheelchair, so I have to lower the bed and strain upwards to talk to them!'

'I didn't really lose anything aside from my ability to walk. There are still many opportunities for me in society, and having a strong support group really helped me move forward to accept my disability. Of course, there have been many obstacles in life for me as a wheelchair user, but as long as there are people helping you along the way and you continue working towards a solution, you can handle anything life throws your way. Don’t let your impairment limit your ability.'

--------------------------------------------

Dr. Jennifer Lui is the first and only wheelchair user to become a doctor in Hong Kong, and kindly took the time to share her experiences with us on Thursday. If you want to learn more about wheelchair users, don’t hesitate to sign up for our upcoming Disabilities Experience Day on November 6!

#RemovetheLabel is a disabilities awareness campaign organised by AMSAHK SCORP, aiming to tear off the labels associated with disabilities, and to stress the importance of non-discriminatory healthcare amongst vulnerable populations. Stay tuned for more posts in the upcoming week :D

Everyday, terrible things happen in our communities. There are a lot of people who are hurt from an accident, people who just witnessed the violent death of their loved ones, and people who are struggling to erase traumatic memories from their minds. With this year’s theme of World Mental Health Day, “Psychological First Aid”, we can learn to provide support to people who are in need, to do what we must do, and to not do what we must not. Let’s join AMSA International in spreading the knowledge of Psychological First Aid to those people who are in positions to help by sharing this link: https://issuu.com/amsainternational/docs/world_mental_health_day_1575e25cd325c8/1

Do you know the latest update on Zika cases in Asia?
Local scientists found that the virus belongs to Asian lineage; likely evolved from the strain that was already circulating in South East Asia. The virus that was found from early cases in Asia was not imported from South America.

Zika virus was first identified in Uganda and is now widely found across Africa, Asia, America and the Pacific. Recently, 242 cases of infections caused by a new strain were found in Singapore. 1 case was also reported in Malaysia and cases of local infection are on the rise.

Together with AMSA International, let's take your part as the people of tomorrow. Join us to raise awareness of Zika Virus by spreading the information in this infographic to our members and also our society in Asia Pacific and beyond. Take your part and make a change now.

Did you know your blood can save someone's life? And that with a single blood donation, you can save up to 3 lives?

Blood is truly a special gift. However, only a mere 4% of eligible donors in New Zealand actually give. This is clearly not good enough!

Thus! _MS_ New Ze_l_nd have lost our As and Os in support of the #MissingType campaign to raise awareness about blood donations!
