The closing of Ofrenda 2024 at the Detroit Institute of Arts was a much appreciated opportunity to explain the "whys" behind my work. Symbolism, I realize now more than ever, drives my creative choices. Every decision means something personal: right down to the colors and the most seemingly insignificant of objects. I can't find words to properly express my gratefulness to family and friends who came and supported me. My ofrenda is finally and fully installed at the Detroit Institute of the Arts. I needed a second day to complete the install. I came back with LED lights: six votives and a strand of red fairy lights along with several other elements that were a little icing on the cake. I'm glad that Ani and Barbara made several great suggestions and were patient about me scheduling a second day to complete the installation. My submission, Ottilie's Basket, is part of ECVA's Layers of Hope Exhibition. Curator, Suzanne Schleck, sensitively explores how "each piece of art we (the participating artists) contributed is built upon layers both dark and light of what came before... Each layer is preparation for the next." Her careful selection and arrangement of works reflects both dark and light while exposing hope even in the darkest places. Mindful of the gift of Suzanne's time, sensitivity, and talent. Following the loss of my parents, I faced darkness and struggled to find the light. During this time, I became the keeper of our family's past, collecting memorabilia in a basket that traces its origins back to my grandmother's journey from Straubing, Germany to Ellis Island in 1918. This memorabilia turned into a collection of iterations and a final altered book (which includes those same iterations). My creative process evolved into a collaborative journey, inviting perspectives from a wider circle to expand the narrative, a testament to the power of community in shaping our stories. In a world that sometimes feels overshadowed by darkness and chaos, I searched for hope in life’s unfolding moments. In “Ottillie’s Basket,” I wove together fragments of family history into a narrative of expectancy and promise. I am grateful for the opportunity to unveil "expectancy" during this most unlikely time. This inspiring show is part of the biennial interfaith Liturgical Arts Festival of Springfield, IL. This is a nationwide juried art exhibition curated through collaboration with the Springfield Art Association and the M.G Nelson Gallery. "Number 3" can be counted upon at the "Every Picture Tells a Story" exhibit at @southhavenarts I am always excited to share my work at this beautiful gallery and with this creative, supportive community of artists. My piece is the assemblage work that's topped off with a Tinker Toy and has the frame embellished with the vintage measuring tape. I love how I can take creative risks and discover that I am surrounded by others who are also pushing their creative process to new levels.
