After working relentlessly for more than 5 years, we are elated to share that we have been able to bring about a major policy change in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016.

This is reflected in the recent assessment guidelines published by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, which include the Pain Disability Scale to assess people with chronic pain and chronic neurological conditions.

We are extremely grateful to all government officials who believed in our work and supported us - Guru Pawaskar Sir () and Taha Sir () for giving us the opportunity to hold the first-ever national conference on invisible disabilities in India at the International Purple Fest Goa 2024, Praveen sir for encouraging us to share a draft for the revised guidelines for chronic neurological conditions and Rajiv Sharma Sir, Rajesh Aggarwal Sir and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India for releasing the new guidelines and taking all our points into consideration.

It is a new dawn for people with invisible disabilities as our disabilities are no longer invisible! We will soon be sharing a comparative analysis of the previous and current assessment guidelines. Please watch this space.

July 23 is World Sjögren’s Day, dedicated to raising awareness about this often-overlooked autoimmune disease. Sjogren’s is a chronic condition that affects the moisture-producing glands, primarily those in the eyes and mouth. This can lead to dry eyes, dry mouth, and a host of other uncomfortable and weakening symptoms.

While these might seem like minor inconveniences, for those living with Sjögren’s, they can significantly impact the quality of life. Fatigue, joint pain, and even organ involvement are common challenges faced by patients. It’s essential to understand that Sjogren’s is more than just dry eyes and mouth; it’s a systemic condition that can affect multiple parts of the body.

Sjogren’s syndrome is managed with various treatments, including artificial tears, saliva substitutes, humidifiers, dental care, and medications for dryness. Pain, fatigue, and skin issues are addressed separately. Immunosuppressants may be used in severe cases. Regular check-ups are crucial.

Let’s use this day to break the silence surrounding Sjogren’s. support research, and advocate for better understanding and treatment options. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of millions affected by this invisible illness.

July 13 is Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) Awareness Day!

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a rare cancer. Approximately 18%–25% of patients in India have been diagnosed with GIST based on imaging or while being investigated for other illnesses.

Because it’s uncommon, people might not know about it or the signs to watch for. Like with other cancers, catching GIST early means better treatment options and a higher chance of recovery.

If more people are aware, it can lead to a quicker diagnosis. More awareness means more research. If everyone knew about GIST, there might be more money to study it. This could lead to better ways to find, treat, and eventually understand it completely.

Support for patients and caregivers, By spreading the word, patients and caregivers can find each other and helpful resources. This can make them feel less alone and give them the information they need to make care decisions.
For better care of everyone, we know about GIST, so they can speak up for better treatment options and specialist care for patients.

Today is Heterochromia Awareness Day!

Heterochromia is a condition that causes people to have different colored eyes. it doesn’t affect your vision at all. There are three main types of heterochromia:

- Complete heterochromia: This is when one iris is a completely different color than the other. you have one blue eye and one brown eye.

* Central heterochromia: This is when the outer ring of your iris is a different color from the rest. The center of your iris is usually around your pupil, and the outer ring is the colored part. So, with central heterochromia, you have a brown center ring and a green outer ring in one eye.

* Sectoral heterochromia: This is when a section of one iris is a different color than the rest of that iris. So, you might have one blue eye with a brown triangle-shaped section in it.

Sickle Cell Day is celebrated every year on June 19th to raise awareness about sickle cell disease and the challenges patients and their families face. This year’s theme, “Hope Through Progress: Advancing Care Globally,” aims for a future where sickle cell disease is no longer a burden.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that affects hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in the body. Normally, red blood cells are round and flexible, but in SCD, they become stiff and crescent-shaped, blocking blood flow. Blocked blood flow can cause serious issues like strokes, eye problems, infections, and painful episodes.

Sickle cell disease is lifelong. The only cure is a bone marrow transplant which is very costly. Treatments like blood transfusions and medicines can help manage symptoms. They can treat themselves by drinking plenty of water, avoid extreme temperatures, eat a heart-healthy diet, and get regular vaccines.

Let’s raise our voices, share knowledge, and support the warriors battling sickle cell every day. Together, we can make a difference.

Every year, June 18 is acknowledged as Autistic Pride Day, a day about celebrating autistic people and their unique strengths and feeling proud about who they are. It is denoted by the rainbow infinity symbol and was first celebrated in 2005 by an organisation named Aspies For Freedom (AFF).

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental condition. It is called developmental because its symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life. However, many autistic individuals go on to get a diagnosis later in their lives. ASD is more prevalent in males than females, especially in individuals with higher IQs (Werling and Geschwind 2013).

Did you know? Autism is a spectrum, meaning it affects each person differently.

Autistic people may face a variety of challenges including social anxiety, difficulty in communication, repetitive behaviour, depression, difficulty in controlling emotions, social relations, maintaining relationships, sleep problems and challenges maintaining eye contact. These comprise only the tip of the iceberg; autism manifests differently in every individual.

People of all genders, races, ethnicities and economic backgrounds can be diagnosed with ASD.

Let’s come together to spread awareness and acceptance about autism today and every day.

June 13 is International Albinism Awareness Day.

Albinism is a genetic condition that affects melanin production, which produces hair, eye, and skin pigmentation. The more melanin your body produces, the darker your eyes, hair, and skin will be.

People with Albinism have little or no pigmentation in the skin, hair, and eyes. Their pale skin often makes them more likely to get sunburned. They also have an increased risk of skin cancer. Over time, people with albinism might lose vision as well.

Albinism affects people irrespective of their race and ethnicity and is often associated with discrimination, social stigma, and violence.
People with Albinism often face discrimination as they have a different skin colour. It is believed that albinism is contagious or that people who have it are devilish.

Albinism has no cure but it can be treated by eye care, wearing glasses, skin care, and medication.

According to the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (2016), Albinism is not considered a disability.

Albinism is not a flaw; it is a part of human diversity. Let us consider this a sign to be kinder and more empathetic to everyone around us.

Chronic Pain India grieves the loss of Bhargavi Davar, a tireless advocate whose work profoundly impacted the lives of countless individuals with psychosocial disabilities. Founder and Managing Trustee of Bapu Trust for Research on Mind & Discourse and a woman with a psychosocial disability herself, Bhargavi’s dedication shaped the landscape of mental health and disability rights in India, and her unwavering voice championed a life of dignity for those living with these conditions. Her absence leaves a void, but her legacy of advocacy and activism will continue to inspire future generations.

About Us

According to National Institute of Health (NIH), Chronic pain is often defined as any pain lasting more than 12 weeks. Whereas acute pain is a normal sensation that alerts us to possible injury, chronic pain is very different. Chronic pain persists—often for months or even longer.

Chronic pain may arise from an initial injury, such as a back sprain, or there may be an ongoing cause, such as illness. However, there may also be no clear cause. Other health problems, such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, decreased appetite, and mood changes, often accompany chronic pain. Chronic pain may limit a person’s movements, which can reduce flexibility, strength, and stamina. This difficulty in carrying out important and enjoyable activities can lead to disability and despair.

India is a country with a population of 1.3 billion (approx). A survey conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 15 centers across Asia, Africa, Europe, and United States of America demonstrated the prevalence of chronic pain in 5 % to 33% of the population.
