Accept Who You Are. You Will Be Happier
I'd like to share a personal story that demonstrates how a simple concept like self-acceptance can significantly impact your life, not only in the present but also for decades to come.
For those people who know me, would be familiar with my outgoing and friendly nature. I'm often seen as a social butterfly, thriving in social situations and interacting with others. However, this gregarious personality trait is, in part, a coping mechanism I developed to avoid standing out. By being likable, agreeable, and engaging, I ensured that I fit in with the crowd, never drawing attention to my individual qualities or unique perspectives. This chameleon-like behavior allowed me to mask my deep-seated fear of being judged or misunderstood. As a result, my true identity and potential remained hidden beneath the surface, hindering my personal growth and satisfaction in both personal and professional aspects of my life.
In school, I never raised my hand to ask questions, fearing I'd be seen as incompetent. I'd go home and figure things out on my own. This strategy worked for a while, but in my professional life, it held me back. I struggled to advocate for myself, shying away from promotions and growth opportunities due to the fear of failure and judgment. This fear eventually led to resentment and dissatisfaction with my corporate career and contributed to my struggles with anxiety and depression.
After leaving the corporate world, I dreamed of starting my own business. However, my ADHD often led me to fixate on minutiae, hindering my ability to take action and bring my ideas to life. Even though I sought help through counseling and medication to manage my ADHD, anxiety, and depression, my fear of failure and judgment persisted, causing me to become stuck in a cycle of inaction. This fear not only affected my finances but also my personal relationships, leading to more anxiety and depression. Would my life have been different if someone pulled me aside and tell me to be who I am? It definitely would have.
My experiences have inspired me to create a movement that starts with a shirt that encourages others to embrace their uniqueness and overcome the fear of judgment, especially for those at a young age. The shirt serves as a reminder that our individuality is a gift, and we should celebrate it. If you or someone you know could benefit from this message, please share my story and help make a difference in their life.
