⚠️ WHOOPING COUGH: WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW
We’ve noticed an increase in whooping cough cases in our area, and we want to help parents recognise the symptoms and know when to seek medical attention.
Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can initially look like an ordinary cold. However, it can become serious, particularly in babies and young children.
👀 What should you look out for?
• A runny nose, sneezing or a mild cough
• Repeated coughing fits
• A “whooping” sound when breathing in
• Vomiting after coughing
⚠️ Important: Babies may have little or no cough, so symptoms aren't always obvious.
🚨 When to seek urgent care: If your baby has pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips or skin, difficulty breathing, unusual drowsiness or limpness, or difficulty feeding, seek urgent medical attention.
🩺 Concerned about your child? Our doctors at Village Health Medical Centre can assess your child and advise on the appropriate next steps. Whooping cough can be diagnosed with a test, and antibiotics may be prescribed when indicated. Household contacts may also need preventive treatment.
📢 Whooping cough is a notifiable condition in South Africa, meaning healthcare professionals must report cases to the relevant health authorities.
