I've been thinking a lot about death lately, and scribbling about it in my journal too. It feels close to home right now because I have a family member who is terminally ill. We are all outraged that she will be taken in her prime, as if life owes us something more. But the truth is you won't ever know when your time is and there are no guarantees.
2 weeks ago I was hit by a truck. I nearly beat her to it, and the trauma of that thought was worse than my injuries, although both are ongoing.

Here today, gone tomorrow without warning.

Last night I was watching an Okovango documentary. Fish are being eaten by birds. Birds are being eaten by crocodiles. Baby ellie's are being lovingly created and then being eaten by lions. There is no reaction. No outrage. No expectation for a certain life. Not even from me watching the film.

We are all put on this planet to eat, reproduce and die. We are all part of this natural order of things. And as the ones with the big brains and the frontal lobes, there is very little that distinguishes us from the other life on this planet. The show must go on and yet...we somehow feel separate from this cycle of life and death. Subject to different rules or exempt somehow.

The truth is that if we can get out of survival mode for a while, the only difference between us and some animals is that we can use our big brains create. We can build a better earth. Start a legacy. Help one another. Perhaps connect to a higher purpose or spirit.

We can gather our tribe and love one another. But animals are no different.
We can work or hunt to eat.
Have as much s*x as possible.
Make babies.
Build our friendships and family connections.
But animals are no different.

The only thing that distinguishes us from the rest of the food chain is our ability to create.
If you were wiped out tomorrow, what legacy have you left behind?
Have you made this planet a better place?
Are the people in your life or your town uplifted because they knew you?
Have you created something beautiful with your life?
Is the planet better off because you were in it?

Hug your loved ones today. Send them your love, tomorrow is not promised.

So this is one of my thoughts about death. Last night I was watching an Okovango documentary. Fish are being eaten by birds. Birds are being eaten by crocodiles. Baby ellie's are being lovingly created and then being eaten by lions. There is no reaction. No outrage. No expectation for a certain life. Not even from me watching the film.

Have as much s*x as possible.

But animals are no different.

The only thing that distinguishes us from the rest of the food chain, in the grand scheme of things...is our ability to create.
If you were wiped out tomorrow, what legacy have you left behind?
Have you made this planet a better place?
Are the people in your life or your town uplifted because they knew you?
Have you created something beautiful with your life?
Is the planet better off because you were in it?

Everyday we hear about strangers dying of dread diseases or unnatural causes and it doesn't touch our hearts because death is just part of life. Another number or statistic. And yet when death strikes close to home we feel sad but also cheated somehow. In our own immediate circle it becomes real. And I guess that is how we cope, without carrying the world's troubles on our shoulders.

But whether you believe death is random or pre-ordained, none of us know when our time is near.
What would your tribe say about you at your funeral?
But more importantly...what legacy would you leave behind if today was your last day?
When it comes right down to it, nothing else really matters.

Remember to give your loved ones a big hug and tell them that you love them. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed to any of us.
