Former South African Presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma are testifying before a commission of inquiry into allegations of political interference – during their Presidential terms – to delay prosecution of apartheid-era crimes. Mbeki, who together with Zuma, resisted appearing before the commission, took the stand yesterday, saying the allegations were a complete ‘fabrication’, and denied meeting with apartheid-era generals about such plans.

Eritreans are being threatened with a ban by Britain’s Home Secretary unless Eritrea agrees to the return of more small boat migrants and convicted criminals. Shabana Mahmood said that VIPs and officials from Eritrea have already been stripped of fast-track access to UK visas. And as of this, diplomats based in the UK will face restrictions on their movements outside London. The Home Office said the warning comes after Eritrea abruptly withdrew returns co-operation this year and after months of efforts by London to resolve the matter privately.

Former Senegalese President Macky Sall has withdrawn his candidacy for the position of UN Secretary-General following opposition to his nomination and controversy over the African Union’s endorsement process. Sall said his decision followed an informal vote held on 16 October and consultations with Burundi’s President, Évariste Ndayishimiye, the current chairperson of the AU, and Senegalese President Bassirou Faye, the current chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States.

And a Tanzanian court has struck out a long-running case against a company linked to South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe brought by P**a Group LLC seeking $195m in damages. P**a and its Tanzanian unit sued Motsepe and his associate firms – African Rainbow Minerals Ltd, African Rainbow Capital Investments Ltd and ARCH Sustainable Resources GPCO Ltd – for allegedly breaching a non-compete contract when it invested in Australia’s Evolution Energy Minerals Ltd, whose Chilalo project is located next to P**a’s graphite project, according to court documents.

[ IN THIS WEEK'S IBA LEGALBRIEF AFRICA ]

In an attempt to prevent another round of violent anti-immigration protests, sparked by a recent Constitutional Court ruling that sections of the country's Refugees Act was unconstitutional, South Africa plans to now ask the courts for a supervisory order to guide its response to the judgment. Anti-immigration groups have seized on the rush of asylum applications at Home Affairs offices, following the ruling, to incite protests in the run-up to the local government elections on 4 November.

In Kenya, the government has suffered a major setback after the Environment and Land Court in Bungoma declaring the Ksh5bn ($38m) Kanduyi Airstrip affordable housing project unconstitutional, and suspending the project for violating requirements on public participation and environmental protection.

Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed the International Court of Justice in The Hague of its intention to file a lawsuit against Israel over the 1973 downing of the Libyan Airlines aircraft known as ‘Flight 114’ over the Sinai Peninsula – that resulted in 108 civilian fatalities.

Zambia's Government has signed an agreement allowing it to receive $1.5bn in health funding from the US after resolving concerns over Washington's request for medical data, following stalled negotiations concerns over data privacy and a US attempt to tie the funding to access to critical minerals.
And the African Union has launched the continent’s first credit rating agency, seeking to provide an alternative to the ‘big three’ global ratings agencies as debt burdens weigh on many ‌African economies. The Africa Credit Rating Agency – the creation of which African leaders endorsed in 2018 – was launched in Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, where it will be based.

[IN MEDICAL BRIEF - Why Did I Become A Doctor South Africa Podcast ?]

Two Years Just To Look The Audience In The Eye | Dr Suhayl Essa

This week on Why Did I Become A Doctor?, Dr Suhayl Essa talks medicine, comedy, burnout, men’s health - and the decision to walk away from a medical career.

A medical doctor, stand-up comedian and co-founder of The Gentlemen’s Clinic, Suhayl shares the unlikely route that took him from emergency medicine and anaesthesia to the comedy stage, and eventually to a telehealth practice focused on men’s health.

He also explains why telehealth can make particular sense for men, where stigma and discomfort can mean that some of the things they most need to talk about are the things they are least likely to raise with their GP.

It is an interesting follow-on to the recent conversation with Dr Mimi Mukwevho, who made the case for telehealth as primary care rather than a threat to it.
Two doctors, two very different journeys, and two perspectives on how healthcare is changing.
