**Are you training your horse for an outcome, or for a better relationship? 🦋**

It's easy to measure a training session by what our horse achieves.

Did they stand still? Load into the trailer? Respond to the cue?

But there's another question worth asking: *What was the experience like for my horse?*

Training offers us an opportunity to build more than a set of behaviours. We can develop understanding, confidence, trust and cooperation along the way.

That doesn't mean ignoring the outcome or expecting every interaction to be perfect. It means paying attention to how we teach, what our horse communicates, and whether our approach is helping them learn.

Because the goal isn't simply to get a horse to do what we want.

**It's to build a relationship in which learning can flourish.**

💬 What is one thing you could approach differently in your next training session?

**Are you training your horse for an outcome, or for a better relationship? 🦋**

When we train a horse, it's easy to focus only on what we want them to do.

Stand still. Walk beside us. Load into the trailer. Stand for the farrier. Respond to a cue.

But what if we shifted our focus?

Instead of asking only, *“How do I get my horse to do this?”* we also asked, *“How can I help my horse feel safe, understand what I'm asking, and become a willing participant?”*

The goal isn't to abandon the outcome. It's to change how we get there.

Because training isn't just about teaching a horse what to do. It's also about shaping how they experience being with us.

**A better relationship doesn't replace good training. It gives us a better foundation for it.**

🦋 At Flutterby Equine, we believe in happy horses and happy humans.

What if we changed the question? 🐴

When our horse doesn't do what we ask, it's easy to think:

“How do I get my horse to do this?”

But what happens when we ask:

“Why is my horse finding this difficult?”

A horse that moves away, hesitates, rushes, braces or refuses isn't necessarily being difficult.

Their response is information.

That doesn't mean letting your horse do whatever they want.

It means listening while still providing clear boundaries, communication and guidance.

Because training isn't just about producing a horse that complies.

It's about helping a horse understand, feel safe, gain confidence and learn that communication works.

That's where Comfort, Communication, Confidence and Connection come together—with Trust at the centre. 💙

When your horse won’t stand still… 🐴

The usual question is:

“How do I make them stand?”

But try asking:

“Why can’t my horse stand?”

Are they anxious?
Do they understand what you’re asking?
Are they uncomfortable?
Are they anticipating something?
Have you taught stillness gradually?
Are you rewarding the behaviour you want?
Are you giving them a chance to communicate?

The goal isn't simply a horse that stands still.

It’s a horse that understands what is being asked, feels safe enough to respond, and learns that communication works.

That’s where Comfort, Communication, Confidence and Connection come together—with Trust at the centre. 💙

What does it really mean to have a horse as a partner? 🐴

A horse doing what we ask doesn't necessarily mean we have a partnership.

Are they responding because they:
• understand?
• trust?
• feel confident?
• or simply know they have no choice?

Ethical training isn't about letting your horse do whatever they want.

It's about setting clear boundaries without ignoring what your horse is telling you.

The horse doesn't have to have the final say—but the horse gets a say.

That is where partnership begins. 💙

The Quiet Conversation

Stand near a horse without touching them.

Take a moment to notice your own posture, breathing and attention.

Then invite the horse to move with you—without pulling, pushing or using a lead rope.

Notice what happens.

Does the horse follow?
Do you become more intentional about your movements?
Do you rush when the horse doesn't respond?
Do you become frustrated?
Do you change your approach?
What happens when you slow down?

There isn't necessarily a “right” way to do it.

The learning comes from what you notice about yourself as you try.

This is one of the ways equine-assisted learning can create opportunities to explore communication, confidence, boundaries, adaptability and trust.

🐴 Sometimes the most useful feedback comes without words.

No previous horse experience is required for many EAS activities.

🐴 What can a horse teach you about yourself?

A horse doesn’t care about your job title, your qualifications or how confident you think you are.

They respond to what you communicate through your body language, energy, attention and actions.

Working with horses can therefore give us a different perspective on ourselves:

• How clearly do I communicate?
• What happens when I feel uncertain?
• Do I listen—or do I assume?
• How comfortable am I with setting boundaries?
• What happens when things don't go according to plan?
• Can I adapt without losing confidence?

In equine-assisted learning, these moments become opportunities to notice, explore and learn. Not because the horse is magically giving us the answers—but because the interaction can help us see ourselves from a different perspective.

What might your horse notice about you that you don't notice about yourself?
