As we age, getting up from a chair may come with a few sound effects... 😄

…but it does not need to mean losing function, confidence or independence.

Staying active is not about trying to be younger.

It is about helping your body stay capable, confident and independent for as long as possible.

And yes... sometimes the knees may still want to negotiate first.

Many people think exercise needs to be intense to make a difference.

But as we age, simple regular movement becomes incredibly important for maintaining strength, balance, mobility and independence.

Walking.
Stretching.
Simple strengthening exercises.
Improving balance.
Moving more consistently.

Small things still matter.

As we age, movement becomes about far more than exercise 🩵

It helps support:
• independence
• confidence
• mobility
• balance
• strength
• quality of life

Many people only realise how important movement is once everyday activities begin feeling harder.

The encouraging reality is that small consistent movement habits can still make a meaningful difference at every age.

Healthy aging is not about getting stronger. It is about continuing to move in ways that support your body, your health and your daily life.

Each year from 15 May to 15 June is 🩵 Turquoise for the Elderly 🩵

At RiAB, it is a time to focus on active aging and the importance "to keep moving" as we age.

Many people begin accepting stiffness, weakness, fatigue or reduced mobility as simply “part of getting older.”

But improvement is often still possible.

The encouraging reality is that the body can still adapt at every age.

This June I will be sharing simple, practical healthy aging and movement guidance inspired by the Senior Plus approach, focusing on small realistic steps that support strength, balance, mobility and confidence.

Because sometimes we do not realise how much movement matters… until we begin experiencing the benefits ourselves.

It is MS Month 🧡🩵
(and a very late post from me)

Last year Henrien and I took part in the international MS May 50K challenge, where she set herself a very challenging goal. Like many of yoy know we had a setback with a wrist injury, but she still pushed through and reached her goal with real perseverance 🎯💪🏼

This year we are doing things differently: focusing less on pushing limits and more on building a strong, healthy foundation that she can continue with long after the challenge.

As a biokineticist, I’ve seen again how important it is to balance exercise, recovery, stress, and consistency — especially when living with MS.

This year’s focus is simple: move more, build steadily, and prioritise health in a sustainable way.

Henrien continues to inspire me daily with her consistency and positive attitude.

We are now in the last week of the Move Strong May challenge, and I just want to say: well done Henrien — you are an inspiration.

If you would like to support MS in South Africa, I have shared her fundraising page below.

And to everyone taking part this month — well done. May this challenge build you up and inspire those around you.
