💧 WHY IS ENOUGH WATER IMPORTANT?

Adequate hydration helps maintain blood volume, body temperature, normal kidney function, digestion and concentration. Too little fluid can lead to dehydration, headaches, dizziness and reduced urine output.

🚰 Are you drinking enough water for your daily needs? What signs tell you that you may be dehydrated?

Let’s discuss. 👇🏾

🧫 DIAGNOSTIC CHALLENGE

A 25-year-old woman presents with vaginal discharge. A vaginal swab is collected and sent to the laboratory.

Microscopy shows Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria, with no obvious pathogenic organisms.

🤔 Question: What bacterium could this be, and what is its clinical significance?

HIV DIAGNOSIS CASE

A 25-year-old man comes to your laboratory for routine HIV testing. He has no symptoms.

You perform the first HIV screening test, and the result is reactive.

He immediately asks: “Does this mean I have HIV?”

🤔 As the laboratory scientist, what should you do next before making a final diagnosis?

What’s your answer? 👇
Let’s meet in the comments section.

A 23-year-old man presents with intense burning during urination and thick yellow pe**le discharge for 3 days.

On further questioning, he reports unprotected sexual in*******se one week ago. His partner, however, reports having no symptoms.

A urine sample is sent to the laboratory.

🔬 Based on this presentation, what is your most likely diagnosis? And what diagnostic method can you use to confirm the likely Diagnosis

💧 “Mwaume, at I’m Just Tired…”

“Boss, I don’t know what is happening to me. I’m just tired.”

That’s what a friend told me one afternoon.

He had a headache, felt weak, dizzy and his mouth was dry.

I asked him, “Mwaume, when last did you drink water?”

He looked at me and laughed…

“Water? Today I’ve only had two cups of tea.” 😭😂

Sometimes we blame stress, work, lack of sleep or hunger when the body is simply saying:

“Ndefyaya menshi!” 💧

When you don’t drink enough water, your body struggles to maintain normal blood circulation and temperature. You may become tired, dizzy, develop headaches, have dark urine and struggle to concentrate. Severe dehydration can become dangerous.

So before you say, “Nshaba bwino, I’m just tired,” ask yourself:

👉🏾 “Have I actually drunk enough water today?”

Now be honest, Zambia 😂👇🏾

A 24-year-old man comes for an HIV test at your health facility after a recent risky sexual encounter.

🔬 Result: HIV screening test — Reactive
🔬 Confirmatory test — Non-reactive

The client is confused and asks:
“So, am I HIV positive or negative?”

👉 As a medical scientist, how would you explain this result and what should happen next?

Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments. 👇🏾

A patient presented a painless ge***al ulcer. A syphilis screening test (RPR) was reactive, but the TPHA/TPPA confirmatory test was non-reactive.

👉 As a laboratory scientist, what would you do next?

Would you report the result, repeat the test, or request another test?

🩸 BLOOD TRANSFUSION: MORE THAN JUST FINDING A MATCH

A patient requires an urgent blood transfusion. The blood group is known, and a unit of blood is available. However, the Medical Laboratory Scientist does not simply release the blood.

The sample undergoes ABO/RhD typing, antibody screening, and compatibility testing (crossmatching) before the unit is cleared for transfusion. 🔬🧪

Why is crossmatching still necessary when the patient’s blood group and the donor’s blood group appear compatible?
