Booking your first therapy session can feel like a big step. Many people tell me they almost cancelled more than once, not because they didn’t need support, but because they didn’t know what to expect.

If you’re thinking about starting therapy, here are 5 things I wish everyone knew before their first visit:

1. You don’t need to “know what’s wrong”.
Many people arrive with a feeling rather than a clear problem. Something feels heavy, stuck or different. That’s more than enough reason to come.

2. “I don’t know where to start” is fine.
It’s one of the most common first sentences I hear. We’ll find the starting point together, gently and at your pace.

3. Crying, or not crying, are both okay.
Some people feel emotional the moment they sit down. Others feel calm and talk easily. There’s no right or wrong way to feel in the room.

4. We’re not here to fix you. We’re here to help you.
You are not broken. Therapy is a space to understand yourself more deeply and discover what you need, with support rather than judgement.

5. Your first session is just a conversation.
There’s no pressure to share everything at once. It’s simply a chance to talk, ask questions and see whether it feels right for you.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the hardest part is often just walking through the door. Once people do, they’re usually surprised by how much lighter they feel simply from being heard.

For many people in Dubai, there’s another layer. Living far from family and close friends, juggling busy careers and constantly “holding it together” can leave very little space to talk openly about how you really feel.

Reaching out isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a sign that you’re ready to give yourself the care you deserve.

If you’ve been thinking about therapy, you’re welcome to reach out to Positive Living UAE. We’ll take it one step at a time, together.

Maybe you’ve found a v**e in your teenager’s bag. Or noticed a sweet smell in their room. Or maybe you just have a feeling something has changed.

For many parents, the first reaction is shock, fear or anger. And that’s completely understandable.

But before the confrontation, it can help to ask a different question: what might va**ng be doing for my child?

For many teenagers, va**ng isn’t only about the device. It can be a way of:

Managing stress, pressure or anxiety
Fitting in and feeling accepted by friends
Coping with boredom or loneliness
Feeling a sense of control or independence
Calming down after a difficult day

Many v**es contain ni****ne, which is highly addictive, especially for a developing teenage brain. So yes, it matters. But lectures, threats or searching their room often push teens further into secrecy.

In my work with teenagers, one thing I often notice is that they respond far more to curiosity than to control. When they feel understood rather than judged, they’re more likely to talk honestly.

For many families in Dubai, there’s another layer. High academic expectations, frequent school changes, social media and growing up between cultures can leave teens searching for quick ways to cope.

What can help:

Stay calm and choose a quiet moment to talk
Ask open questions: “What does va**ng help you with?”
Share your concerns honestly, without shaming
Keep clear boundaries, while staying connected
Seek support if it feels bigger than you can handle

With patience and the right support, teenagers can learn healthier ways to manage what they’re feeling.

If your family is navigating this, you don’t have to figure it out alone. At Positive Living UAE, we support teenagers and parents with compassion and practical guidance.

Few experiences shake a relationship as deeply as infidelity.

For the partner who was betrayed, it can feel as if the ground has disappeared. Questions replay at night. Trust feels impossible. Even ordinary moments can bring back the pain.

For the partner who strayed, there is often guilt, shame and confusion about how things reached this point, and fear about what happens next.

After an affair, couples often experience:

Waves of anger, grief and disbelief
A strong need for answers and reassurance
Difficulty feeling safe or close again
Fear of being hurt, or of hurting, once more
Uncertainty about whether to stay or let go

In my work with couples, one thing I often notice is that infidelity is rarely just about another person. It often points to something that had been missing or unspoken in the relationship for a long time. Understanding that doesn’t excuse the hurt. But it can help both partners see what needs attention if they choose to rebuild.

For many couples in Dubai, there’s another layer. Long working hours, frequent travel, living far from family and the pressures of expat life can create distance that quietly grows. When a crisis hits, many couples also feel they have no one nearby to turn to.

Healing after infidelity is possible, but it takes time, honesty and the right support. Some couples come out of therapy with a deeper connection than before. Others find clarity and peace in parting with respect. Both are valid paths forward.

Imago Couple Therapy offers a safe, structured space where both partners can be heard without blame, and where trust can slowly begin to grow again.

If you and your partner are navigating this, you don’t have to face it alone. We’re here to support you at Positive Living UAE.

“So they zap your brain with electricity?”

If that’s what you imagined when you first heard about neurofeedback, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we hear, and the answer is no.

ILF stands for Infra-Low Frequency neurofeedback. It’s a gentle form of brain training that helps your brain learn more about how it regulates itself.

Let’s clear up a few myths:

No electric zaps. Sensors simply listen to your brain activity. Nothing is sent into your brain.
No hard concentrating. You mostly sit back and relax while the session runs.
It doesn’t read your thoughts. It tracks very slow patterns of brain activity, which is where the “infra-low” comes from.
It’s not a nap. You receive gentle feedback through sound or visuals, which your brain uses to learn.
It’s not one-size-fits-all. Your clinician fine-tunes each session to how you respond.

One thing I often notice is how relieved people feel once they understand what a session really involves. The idea of “brain training” can sound intimidating, but in practice it’s calm, comfortable and surprisingly simple.

For many people in Dubai juggling demanding jobs, busy family lives and constant stimulation, ILF neurofeedback can be a supportive way to work on focus, stress, sleep and emotional regulation, for adults as well as children and teens.

Every brain is different, so every plan is too. It all starts with understanding how yours responds.

Got a question about ILF neurofeedback? Drop it in the comments and we’ll answer it, correctly this time 😉

If you’d like to explore whether neurofeedback could support you or your child, we’re here to help at Positive Living UAE.

Most couples think about therapy only when something feels broken. After a big argument, a breach of trust, or when the distance has grown so wide it’s hard to find the way back.

But relationships don’t usually fall apart overnight. They drift slowly, through busy weeks, unspoken frustrations and conversations that keep getting postponed.

Just like a path, a relationship stays clear when it’s walked together and cared for along the way.

Couple therapy can help you:

Understand each other’s needs more deeply
Communicate without blame or defensiveness
Notice small patterns before they become big problems
Reconnect after life changes like marriage, children or relocation
Keep emotional closeness alive, not just the routine

In my work with couples, one thing I often notice is how many say, “We wish we had come sooner.” Not because their relationship was failing, but because they realised how much easier it is to strengthen a connection than to rebuild one.

For many couples in Dubai, there’s another layer. Long working hours, busy social calendars, raising children far from family and the fast pace of life here can quietly pull partners in different directions. Without meaning to, you can start living side by side instead of together.

Investing in your relationship isn’t a sign that something is wrong. It’s a sign that what you share matters to you.

Imago Couple Therapy offers a safe space to slow down, listen differently and walk forward together with more understanding.

If you feel it’s time to care for your relationship, we’re here to support you both at Positive Living UAE.

Some days, your child just needs a reset.

Maybe it’s after school, before bedtime or in the middle of the supermarket. The tears come, the frustration builds, and nothing you say seems to help.

In those moments, children aren’t trying to make things difficult. Their nervous system is overwhelmed, and they need an adult to help them find their way back to calm.

A few simple things can make a big difference:

Breathe slowly together, so their body can follow yours
Move to a quieter space or step outside for a moment
Let them move: stretch, jump or go for a short walk
Lower your voice and keep your words few
Check whether they’re hungry, thirsty or tired
Name the feeling: “You’re really frustrated right now.”
Offer two simple choices to give back a sense of control
Connect first, then talk about the behaviour later

You don’t need to try all of these at once. Notice which ones work for your child, because every child resets differently.

What I gently remind parents is that regulation is learned through relationship. Each time you help your child settle, you’re teaching them skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives.

For many families in Dubai, busy routines, long school days and constant stimulation can leave children running on empty by the end of the day. A small pause can go a long way.

And remember, mistakes happen, for children and parents alike. Every moment is a chance to reconnect and start fresh.

If you’d like support in understanding your child’s emotions and behaviour, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Positive Living UAE is here to help.

🌍 World Mental Health Day: What Happened to Me Made Me Who I Am 💛

Today, on World Mental Health Day, I invite you to pause and ask yourself a different question.

So often we look at ourselves and ask, “What is wrong with me?” or “What needs to be fixed?” But what if nothing about you is broken? What if the better question is, “What happened to me that made me who I am today?”

Maybe you are:
✨ A high performer who never feels it’s enough
✨ A high achiever who can’t slow down
✨ An overthinker whose mind never switches off
✨ A teenager quietly struggling with anxiety
✨ Someone carrying stories you’ve never shared

These patterns didn’t appear out of nowhere. They are often how we learned to cope, survive and protect ourselves. When we understand where they come from, we can begin to heal, not from judgment but from compassion.

So today, take a moment. Recollect. Look back at your story with kindness. Be as gentle with yourself as you would be with someone you love. 💛

We all need to be more compassionate with ourselves.

If you feel ready to explore your story with support, my team and I at Positive Living UAE are here for you.

You’ve set the boundary clearly and calmly. And your child still says no.

Maybe they cross their arms, turn away or simply don’t move. In that moment, it’s easy to start repeating yourself, raising your voice or reaching for a bigger consequence.

But a child’s “no” isn’t always defiance. Often it’s frustration, tiredness, a need for some control, or simply not knowing how to move from where they are to where you need them to be.

Here’s a calmer way through:

Pause. Use fewer words and a calmer voice. Repeating the instruction again and again usually adds pressure, not cooperation.
Guide. Help them with the next small step. “Let’s put the first shoe on together” is easier than “Get ready now.”
Follow through. Kindly, calmly and consistently. The boundary stays, and so do you.

In my work with parents, one thing I often notice is that boundaries feel hardest when we’re already exhausted. What I gently remind them is this: you don’t need to win the moment. You need to stay steady through it. Children learn that boundaries are safe when the adult holding them stays connected.

For many families in Dubai, there’s another layer. Busy mornings, school runs, work pressure and raising children without grandparents nearby can leave parents with very little patience left. That’s not failure. It’s being human.

Every time you stay calm and follow through with kindness, your child learns two important things: that the limit is real, and that they are still loved while they struggle with it.

And you are learning too.

If this feels familiar, you don’t have to figure it out alone. At Positive Living UAE, we’re here to support you with practical, compassionate parenting guidance.

Many parents worry that if they acknowledge their child's big feelings, they're somehow rewarding the behaviour or giving in.

But validating a feeling is not the same as agreeing with it, and it's certainly not the same as saying yes.

When your child is upset because screen time is over, they can't have another sweet or their brother took their toy, the feeling underneath is very real to them. When we name it, something powerful happens. They feel understood, their nervous system begins to settle, and they become more able to listen.

Validation can sound like this:

"You're really disappointed that we have to leave the park."
"It's hard when you can't have what you want."
"You're angry, and that's okay. I'm right here."
"I understand. And the answer is still no."

Notice that the boundary stays exactly where it is. What changes is how safe your child feels while they learn to accept it.

What I gently remind parents is this: children don't learn emotional regulation from being told to calm down. They learn it by being calmly held through the storm, again and again.

For many families in Dubai, there's another layer. Many of us were raised in cultures where feelings were brushed aside or met with "stop crying". Now we're raising our children in a different place, often without grandparents nearby, and trying to do it differently. That can feel unfamiliar, and sometimes uncomfortable.

If this is new for you, please be gentle with yourself. You are learning too. Every time you pause, name a feeling and hold a boundary with kindness, you are teaching your child that their emotions are welcome, and that they are safe with you.

If you'd like support with conscious parenting, you don't have to figure it out alone.

Have you ever tried to calm your child down with logic, only to watch things get worse?

You explain. You reason. You offer a reward or a consequence. And nothing seems to land.

It isn't because your child is being stubborn or ignoring you. When a child becomes dysregulated, their nervous system shifts into survival mode. It's a bit like a traffic jam in the brain. The road to the thinking, reasoning part is blocked, so even the kindest words can't get through.

During that moment, these usually don't help:

- Long explanations or lectures
- Rewards or bribes to stop the behaviour
- Threats or consequences
- Asking "why are you doing this?"

In my work with parents, what I gently remind them is that a child has to feel safe before they can think clearly. Connection comes first. The conversation can come later.

What can help clear the road:

- Lower your voice and slow your own breathing
- Use fewer words, or none at all
- Stay close, calm and present
- Reduce noise, light and demands around them
- Talk about what happened once everyone is calm again

For many families in Dubai, there's another layer. Busy schedules, school pressure and raising children without grandparents nearby can leave parents running on empty too. And it's very hard to calm a child when your own traffic is building up.

The good news is that regulation can be learned. Every time you stay steady through the storm, your child's nervous system learns a little more about how to find its way back to calm. And you are learning too.

If this feels familiar, you don't have to figure it out alone. At Positive Living UAE, we support parents with practical, compassionate guidance.
