Healthcare has long been measured by how effectively it treats illness. Its future will be defined by how successfully it prevents illness from becoming a crisis.

Noncommunicable diseases, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory conditions, caused at least 43 million deaths in 2021, around 75% of non-pandemic deaths worldwide. About 18 million died before the age of 70. Many of the major risks are modifiable: to***co, poor diet, inactivity, high blood pressure and obesity.

Prevention requires vaccination, routine screening, early diagnosis, accessible primary care and timely intervention, supported by telemedicine and health data that identifies risk before it becomes an emergency.

The results are measurable. Immunization programmes have saved an estimated 154 million lives over 50 years, around six lives every minute. WHO estimates 38% of cancers could be prevented, and earlier detection improves outcomes while reducing costs.

The economic case is just as strong. An additional US$3 per person annually for proven noncommunicable disease interventions could, by 2030, save 12 million lives, prevent 28 million heart attacks and strokes, add 150 million healthy life-years and generate more than US$1 trillion in economic benefits.

Technology extends that impact. US$0.24 per patient annually in digital health tools could help save more than two million lives and prevent seven million acute events and hospitalizations over ten years.

Yet preventive care accounted for only about 3% of health expenditure across OECD countries in 2023. With one in six people globally aged 60 or older by 2030, treatment alone will not be sustainable.

Prevention will not replace doctors or hospitals. It helps them intervene earlier, use resources more effectively and reduce avoidable complications.

The future of healthcare is a shift from reacting to disease to anticipating risk, and from extending lifespan to extending healthy lifespan. The best system will not simply treat more illness. It will prevent more people from becoming seriously ill.
