When you’re training to de-stress, beware you might be burning the candle at both ends.
Most of us pull the exercise lever to try and feel better. Then we finally get to the gym or find time to squeeze the run in and we decide to really push and try get the most bang for our buck.
We push so hard we pile more stress on. A nervous system already working at full blast to meet the rest of the demands you’re under, has a limit to its available capacity. Overload it with too much intensity and you risk tipping it over the edge and breaking it instead of relieving it.
So if you’re training for stress relief, lighten the load, reduce the demand. Aim for a minimum effective dose, just enough to feel like you’ve done something, not so much that you break.
That is the real win, not aiming for a PB or punishing yourself for being too busy to exercise regularly, just ticking the box and feeling better after is the target.
Repeat that until your calendar clears or deadlines pass and that gentle consistency, not intensity, is how you make sure that exercise lever really makes you feel better.
